Really disappointed - feels shady
I went in to the Sanford, FL location with a PCP order for a mammogram. Afterward, the tech wanted me to wait on the table while she discussed the images with the radiologist. He was not happy with the images and wanted further images via an ultrasound. I told the tech, that I did not have an order from my PCP for an U/S, just the mammogram - but I could s/w her and come back. She stated that was not necessary, because they just needed it since the images from the mammogram weren't as clear as the radiologist would like. She made it sound that because it was needed due to poor images from the mammogram - it's just the next step. My ins paid their portion; however, I am being billed $100 for a copay on the u/s. I would have refused the test if I had been able to leave and check into my benefits, but I was led to believe all was fine and just part of the mammogram visit since they weren't happy with the images. I had u/s results in a different state that I could have obtained, and my PCP was already aware of this (probably why she just ordered the mammogram in the first place!). It all feels VERY shady to me, and simply a way to slip in another test for more money - even though I am very well aware that I do have dense breast tissue. I'm not a happy camper. My only income is my SS disability. I don't appreciate having to pay $100 under these circumstances. I tried to contact the facility directly so I could speak to the manager, so she can be informed what her staff did and how it was presented to me. I can't get a human being at the location to talk to. I called the toll free 'CONTACT' number from the website (not the billing dept number), and I received the billing dept. When I informed her that my insurance offered to submit a grievance, as well as reporting it to the fraud dept, I declined - because I thought I would be able to maturely deal with SimonMed directly...first attempting to direct my complaint to the location; however,
when unsuccessful, with SimonMed as a company. So, here I am. I am SO disappointed that this is deemed appropriate business practice. I'm ashamed to admit the wool was pulled over my eyes, and I'm a former hospital RN who also worked as an RN for Blue Cross Blue Shield. If this can happen to me...all I have to say is be careful with SimonMed. I've really tried to deal with the location directly and professionally, but I haven't been able to speak to a human being there. It all seems very shady to me, and I don't enjoy saying that.
