Skyline Motors Reviews (1)

Review: I traded in a 2002 Toyota 4 runner for a 2009 Acura. Skyline offered me 4,000.00 for my Toyota as-is. The 4runner had New Mexico plates and the sales associate knew the car had never been smogged in California. He also knew I was a resident of New Mexico. Over a week after the sale was final I received a call from the dealership stating that the Toyota would not pass smog due to issues with the transmission. The sales associates stated that I needed to pay for the repairs under CA state law. I put them in contact with my mechanic in New Mexico as the transmission had a warranty. My mechanic offered to pay for a portion of the repairs or repair it himself. Skyline still tried to tell me I would owe them money. With the threat of a lawsuit if I didn't pay for the repairs I was worried. I contacted several reputable car dealerships and asked them about their practices regarding trade-ins. All of the other dealers said when they take a car as a trade-in they are responsible for smogging. They never go after the previous owner. I also contacted the DMV department of investigation and they explained that a car has to be smogged when it is sold to a private party but not a dealer as a trade in. These guys were just trying to strong arm me into paying for their mistake. Be careful if you shop here!Desired Settlement: I would like Skyline to cease and desist. I don't want to receive any more phone calls or emails stating that I owe them money.

Response:

Witholding pertinent information is unethical. You can ask other dealers for advice but if you withhold relevant information obviously they will give you the subjective response your seeking. The issue with this trade in was that you did not disclose to [redacted] that the check engine light was on during your ownership and that you actually were aware of the engine light problem when you completed the trade in and purchased our vehicle. However, you did state in person when you came to pick up the registration that you were always aware that the check engine light was on since you owned the vehicle and prior when speaking to him on the phone after the deal was completed. If the check engine light was disclosed to [redacted] before the trade in this would cause the dealership to take it next door to have the smog inspection completed while the deal was made.A check engine light warning was never mentioned by you so there was no need to inspect the vehicle for emissions related issues. We disclosed all the known history on our vehicle and we expected similar disclosure from you, just ethical business practice.
