Skyline Roofing & Contracting Reviews (%countItem)

We have had a "cold walls" feeling in our house and decided we would ask others for help in determining what to do. Home Advisors gave us a referral that we followed up with. The contractor , Brandon Chandler from Skyline Roofing and Contracting, seemed credible as to what our problem was. He said, after looking in our attic, that we have cellulose insulation that was wet and there was mold. So, unfortunately, we took him up on his offer to: (1) remove 100% of the old insulation; (2) put in shoots from the soffits; (3) remove any mold; (4) put in 19 1/2 inches of Owen Corning blown in insulation that he referred to as "wool"; and (5) work would be performed in 2 days.

None of these contract promises were completed. (1) Not all the old insulation was removed; (2) several shoots were put in backwards and not workable; (3) no mold was found; (4) only 10 bags of insulation (fiberglass and not wool) were put in, with some areas receiving only 4" of insulation and no areas equaling 19 1/2"; (5) work took 5 days. Skyline Roofing and Contracting was satisfied with the work; we were not. When we inquired if they were going to finish the job, Brandon said that he would have to charge us more to finish the job per our contract. Rather than pursue legal action, we settled with the company.

All in all, we spent $3656.63 for virtually nothing. We would not recommend Skyline Roofing and Contracting to any one as they do not produce quality work or meet their contract terms. We would not have given them a star rating, but the form required it.

The contractor, Brandon ***, used unethical sales/business tactics, lied to us regarding insurance coverage for a roofing job, did not complete some aspects of the job he said he would and over charged us substantially. Brandon was initially hired to put insulation in the attics above the house and the front porch where there were substantial ice dams. He charged $3000 for our home with a total of 1564 sq. ft. He then used pressure tactics and his wife, Pam, to convince us that we needed a new roof and he found damage from a hail storm in 2016 but time was running out on being able to claim it. He also said we should do our detached garage too and he would repair the fascia. (he did not) He charged us $13,000. An inspector just recently looked at it and said the job, including insulation and roofing, should have been a total of $10,000. We are sick about this. When I asked Pam for time to pay (Brandon said we would have a year), she said no. Skyline also left a pallet on the front lawn with a couple of packages of shingles, a roll of paper, some vents for a couple of weeks. Brandon was contacted multiple times to get it off the lawn. The grass died there and we had to move it ourselves, eventually selling the remnants for $100. It makes me sick to think how this happened. They also did not provide the venting in the porch roof that would have helped with the frost which is AGAIN, forming inside the attic.

This company was hired December of 2018 to finish an attic space. Brandon assured me his company could do all the work included with finishing an unfinished room. 10 months later the room is still not finished and Skyline allowed workers without enough experience to start the finishing work and the drywall will likely need to be completely retaped. There also should have been flooring installed along with trim around the windows and base birds. We were last in contact with them in August where they assured us they’d finish the job as stated in the contract. People they allowed to come into our house also damaged our storm door, kitchen ceiling and drywall in the kitchen and assured us they’d fix it for us but we have had to take care of that ourselves. We had a very difficult time communicating with this company, there were many promises made that they did not live up to. We had to have a dumpster brought to our house to get rid of all the trash they left behind and sat for 9 months, another expense we shouldn’t have had to make. We paid them a lot of money to give us a good quality finished space and they made us feel like we didn’t matter as much as the jobs they were getting paid for later on. They should never have accepted payment in full up front. I find that to be very unprofessional. This was by far the worst experience. The list goes on and on. Horrible communication, broken promises, unprofessionalism, total lack of customer service skills.

Skyline Roofing & Contracting Response • Oct 07, 2019

This was a house that we had a signed contract with, however the wife who was in charge of this project began hitting on the contractor who was performing the work, which made it extremely uncomfortable for the contractor and the general contractor of the project. Insulation and drywall was complete in the attic making it a liveable space as the homeowner insisting on moving into the attic area. Kitchen area was not believed to be on the contract. The amount that was paid was for the attic insulation and drywall. This homeowner also had a signed contract for their roof which was complete and siding. Homeowner failed to have us do the siding and went with a different contractor which would put her in violation of the contract and resulting in a fee for cancellation and restocking fee of material.

I am rejecting this response because:The contractor who Skyline is referring to did not become part of things until 6 or 7 months into the process, which the project should have been finished long before that. The contractor in question was overly friendly as well and was nothing more than that. No flirtation happened, in fact there were accusations made against me that I breast fed my baby in plain sight which is completely false, what kind of person accuses a mother of being too open with breast feeding her baby in her own home? They seemed to be looking for any reason to not come back as it was. Also, the siding was NEVER part of the contract and completely Separate from this job. We offered the siding job to Skyline if they could finish the attic but that didn’t seem to be something they were interested in. Our contract was for a finished space not just to be livable. Accusations of flirtation are heresay and according to the text messages we both have access to was on both ends but wasn’t flirting as far as my husband and I are concerned. We hired and paid this company for a job, the job is not done.

I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere. I would leave 0 stars if it would let me. I didn't want to post a review while the legalities were being worked out. Even so, after much deliberation, I have decided to post a review based on our dealings with Skyline.
They were in Duluth when I called so they came by right away. Seemed knowledgeable regarding our insulation project, which was to blow insulation in the exterior walls through a large, drilled hole. The attic was quoted a good price so we said yes to that as well. However we knew there was some water getting in the attic. but they said they would seal any holes. They also said they would air seal the attic, which means air and moisture from inside the house will no longer make it into the attic.
Additionally, the job was quoted for natural wool insulation. We discovered, too late, that the insulation used was 100% fiberglass.
The crew showed up the first day and started filling the attic immediately, never once having gone in the attic with any kind of caulk gun or sealant of any kind to fill holes, in the roof to seal out water, or for the floor to seal out air. I asked about it and was told they did, indeed, do all of that and that "it's all good bruh". Okay, benefit of the doubt, maybe I just didn't notice.
The next day I arrived at home around 1:00PM and the crew said they were finished. How had they finished the whole attic and all exterior walls in a day and a half? They had packed up their truck and claimed they were able to fill the walls from up in the attic. They were going to leave assuming the job was done. I asked them to walk me through it. As we were walking through it I got my drill and punched a hole in a first floor wall and discovered, not surprisingly, that it was hollow. They unloaded everything and started in on the walls. This happened again later, claiming they were done and me finding hollow and/or completely untouched exterior walls. I was then asked to mark the walls that needed insulation. Me?! I'm a computer programmer, shouldn't the insulation professionals know where the insulation is needed? Eventually I was unable to be there to watch them and they did leave, with the job unfinished. I called them to complain and they reduced the original price somewhat. I told them not to bother about coming back.
Later, I learned that one section of the attic was filled all the way to the top, which is against building codes. There is now MORE frost in my attic then before and we are still receiving letters from our gas company that we use more gas in our area than other homes around us.
We had a separate, certified, insulation installation company come and check things out. This company reported that it is unlikely, based on single hole placement at the top of the wall cavity, that the wall cavities they did try to fill are even filled up half way. They also said an attic that is filled to the top does not leave enough room for air flow and moisture to escape so that may be a problem down the road (mold). Also, that much insulation can start to compress under it's own weight significantly reducing the insulation value. This company suggested we sue them.
We initiated a dispute process with our credit card company in an attempt to avoid a court proceeding and come to a more agreeable price. Rather than work through the dispute process Skyline immediately became aggressive, threatening to put a lien on our property and take us to court. At one point I received a phone call at 6:00 AM where I was called a liar and a "sorry human being". After retaining legal counsel we were advised that going to court would be more costly than simply letting them have our money. They were so aggressive about court, though, we had our lawyer draft a Release of Claim, that Skyline signed, to be sure they would not actually take any legal action against us even after they did receive the agreed upon payment.

This was a customer that signed a contract and that we completed work for. He asked for us not to come back up to Duluth to complete a few patches. He did attempt to make a stop payment with his bank. We did start to process a lien as work was completed for the signed contracts. We also made a dispute with the bank that reversed his funds, and talked to his attorney about this. We provided the contracts that were signed, text messages proving that he was once satisfied with the work, and over 20 pictures proving work was done in his home. After submission of these items the homeowner decided to cancel the dispute he initiated with the bank, and have his attorney draw up papers stating there would no longer be a dispute regarding this.
I can also provide Revdex.com with the SIGNED contracts that were completed, pictures, and text messages as well. We do not complete work for free. We had our guys up there for a few days and several hours of working in his home.

Company claimed to find mold (yet refused to send photos to us) 'sprayed' for mold, claimed to remove old insulation and re insulate then removed a 3 month old roof claiming it was leaking, None of this was true and the Mounds View City inspector determined the insulation was NOT removed nor installed and first roof was perfectly fine and the second roof has never been inspected. They never returned to finish the wall they replaced during this very cold winter and when a crew did come in they did a terrible job, ruining our floors and no one returned to sand and paint for weeks. No responses from the company were received and they had our nearly $40,000 . Finally a third party contacted us and the wall was sanded and painted but no finishing work was ever done. They broke all three contracts we signed --were difficult to contact--we never knew who was actually in charge--we were lied to shamelessly--we were unable to use our insurance because the company did not send the photos as he promised to do for submission--(because the problems weren't there) We are in our mid-70's and were pressured by their lies to believe that we must make these improvements immediately for our health.
We were so shamefully treated and our retirement money was basically stolen from us and now we have to have to have the house re-insulated and paid for two roofs in less than 5 months. These people need to be taken out of business. They are bold liars and cheats. Please help me do that.

Hey ***,

I wanted to respond to a complaint that was made with our company form ***. I’m not sure if this is the correct ID for the complaint ***. Please see below the response to the complaint and the work that was completed in her house.

I am going to walk you through everything pertaining to ***, and all of the work that was completed on her property from the beginning. What she is stating on the complaint especially pertaining to the mold and the insulation is false, and it’s actually news to me that she was unhappy or stating that she has requested pictures. *** was actually out of the home when treating the mold due to the chemical which she has submitted receipts for reimbursement from us on that. The insulation was also installed the following day, and she was still out of the home due to having an event the same day she checked out of the hotel.

This job started as an insulation job that *** requested to have an estimate for. The contractor from Skyline went to her house with our subcontractor at the time his name is Christopher *** his company is ***. He was doing insulation with us, and also was certified with inspecting mold. When both went out to the home they could smell mold as soon as they walked in, and as well could visually see mold coming through her wall (dark black circle). *** at the time agreed there was mold, and reported that she was having difficulty with her asthma due to it. She also stated at the time the dark spot started off small, and was getting bigger over time. At first the contract was for treating the mold, removing old insulation, adding chutes and new insulation. When Christopher started treating the mold he realized that the wall was actually wet. At this time *** agreed for Christopher to open her wall to see where it was getting wet from. *** signed another contract agreeing for sheet rock in the living room to be removed and replaced, do a full mold restoration, full containment , fog the entire area for mold, including the ceiling. This also included taping, mudding, and paint. When the wall was opened up it was apparent there was an active leak coming from the roof. At this time we had our roofing sub contractor named Sal his company is *** We knew we had to act fast since it was a leak that was causing damage. Sal inspected the roof in that area where you could see through the roof, and could visually see there was no ice and water in that area where the leak was taking place. ***’s husband *** decided at this time that they needed to replace the roof to prevent further damage, and knowing that it wasn’t to code in that area. At this time there was a 3rd contract written for this roof which was left with *** and *** to sign they are now stating they don’t have the contract, however did agree to move forward with the roof and paid.

There was a permit that was pulled for the roof, and an inspection has been requested. Since the roof was completed in early February as an urgent matter. We had to wait for the inspection due to the snow. I am waiting on pictures from Sal of ice and water which they require before going out to inspect it.

The mold restoration, insulation, and the roof were all completed with zero complaints of any of the work being questioned. The issue came when Christopher was completing the interior of her home by replacing the sheet rock, taping, & mudding. Christopher at this time was about to have a baby. He had completed the sheet rock, taping, and mudding, but the sanding and painting was not completed. Christopher’s girlfriend ended up having their baby. At this time Chris had not gone out to the home due to that leaving the home unfinished. Christopher was supposed to go out to ***’s home to complete the work around the time of February 12th and never showed up. He took off with our tools, and leaving the job unfinished. Which we are filing a claim for the stolen tools.

We then contacted Benjamin *** with *** who went in and finished the job.

I have all the invoices, proof of payment to the sub contractors, and invoices from Menards for the all the material that was purchased for this customer. I also have a copy of the permit that was pulled. I’ve contacted our insurance company regarding this due to *** reporting there is damage to her carpets and laminate floors. I can forward you the contact information and emails with her as well. At first we were going to contact her insurance company regarding the insulation and mold, which we can still do, but at her and her husbands request they wanted to go to the company that replaced her roof last year due to no ice and water being used on their roof. We have no issue with contacting her insurance company at all.

Here are two contacts you will see she did sign the insulation contract above. The contract for the new roof was left with *** and *** so *** could sign it since she wasn’t there at the time. They did pay in full for the roof which would not have been done without them agreeing to it. I’ve attached the permit as well. If you need any proof of payment made to subcontractors/installers or purchase of material please let me know. Thanks!
