Broke chair leg during move. Refusal to pay for
damages
June 23 Small Moves broke a chair leg off one chair that was a matching set. One of the movers stepped on the leg.
The chair is expensive, the material is a special order and the finish is no longer available. The leg cannot be reattached as there is no guarantee that the chair will safely hold an adult.
I sent them a picture of the chair, the leg and the remaining chair. They sent back an offer of $25 and a release waiver for me to sign.
I submitted a claim for the chair with pictures and a copy of the upholstery bill from 2016 and the value. The chair is manufactured by Sherrill Furniture. I stopped into Design Interiors in Ybor City to get a replacement cost and submitted that as well to Small Moves. Twenty-Five Dollars doesn't begin to come close to replacing the chair. They valued it at 60 cents per pound. They sent me a letter that I received Aug 5
Ms. claim was processed based on our contractually agree upon policy. This policy follows the State of Florida guidelines of 60 cents-per-pound per item. This valuation amount was not an arbitrary number that we arrived at. Additionally, our valuation offer actually exceeded the 60-cent-per-pound threshold.
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The contract was never explained to me. The lead mover asked me to sign before they started.
That particular chair was already on the truck when it was stepped on by one of their team that was is a hurry.
This moving company is the worst to deal with when a claim is made. Furniture of mine was damaged during a move 12/2016. The men knew they caused damage, and took cellphone pictures of the damage. I followed the instructions for filing a claim. After waiting months with no resolution, I was told the claim was "mistakenly put int he paid file", and would be taken care of immediately. The result was no payment at all, denial of the claim!. They give no service, just a run-around. I will never recommend them.
