I rented a storage unit (#[redacted]) from the previous owner of SmartStop from June, 2014 to December, 2014. Rent was paid every month, on time. At conclusion of rental period, I spoke with the attendant, informing him that I was ending my rental arrangement and would be out by the end of the month. Notification was made on December 10, 2014. Subsequently, late charges and uncollected rent (for Jan. 1-31, 2015) was requested in a document dated January 14, 2015. I visited the rental center and indicated that I did not owe the uncollected rent and gave more than two weeks notice of vacating the rental unit.On August, 18, 2015, I received fa phone contact from [redacted] at [redacted], a collection agency in [redacted]. demanding $61.00 payment to SmartStop. I sent a payment by [redacted] to insure that there would be no involvement with the credit rating companies and I am continuing to request proof from SmartStop that I, in fact, owe $57.35 + collection fee (total $61.00).Ms [redacted] stated that I must find the first contract made with another provider ([redacted]) which would state that specific written notice must be made 15 days before vacating the storage unit, otherwise a monthly charge and late fees would be charged.For the duration of the storage unit rental, my monthly fee was $91.00, not $43.40 as shown in the rental termination.I believe that this rental agreement lacks clarity, particularly since the company ([redacted]) was purchased by SmartStop, which (1) changed the payment periods from the date of renting to the first day of each month, and (2) no notification that any further action by SmartStop would be taken until I received a phone call from the collection agency this afternoon. I challenge the validity of the additional charges as well as the neglect by SmartStop to give opportunity to pay, regardless of my affirmation that the fees are invalid.Product_Or_Service: Storage space rental (10X10)Account_Number: [redacted]Desired SettlementI would like my total payment to [redacted] ($61.00) to be remitted to me. I also request that Smart Stop place informational signs where they can be viewed by individuals who pay in person at the store counter, and notices be sent with bills and by email, for those who allow for automatic remittance. When the company changes ownership and payment policies, without notifying the renters in writing of the changes, the initial contract between company and renter has been broken.
