Review: I left my apartment secured and locked on Sunday, August 2, 2015 to go on holiday for three weeks. During my absence, I authorized the leasing office to permit a carpet cleaner entry to my apartment to deliver service on Monday, August 3, 2015. It appears that when that service was completed the leasing office failed to secure and lock my front door and my residence remained unlocked for the next two weeks.

On Monday, August 17, 2015, my neighbor noticed that my front door was standing wide open and so called security to investigate. Security informed the local police, who then performed a wellness check and determined that there was no forced entry or evidence of foul play. Security then notified the leasing office that my residence was not secured and locked. (I spoke to the security dispatcher when I arrived home on Monday, August 24 to confirm this account.) The leasing office, for the second time, failed to secure and lock my front door and my residence remain unlocked for an additional week. Additionally, I was never notified by the leasing office via phone or email about this report. I arrived home to find my apartment door standing wide open and my neighbor reports that it had been so since the August 17 wellness check by the police.

The leasing office represents the proprietor of my residence and so is responsible for the actions of any contracted vendors (cleaners, security, etc.). Yet, when I brought this matter to the immediate attention of the leasing office upon my arrival yesterday afternoon, the representative, [redacted], had no knowledge of the events of August 17, made no attempt to determine if security had in fact reported it, and made no attempt to determine if there was any record of a master key sign-out to access my apartment previously on August 3. In fact, he seemed unconcerned that his office had failed to secure and lock my door on multiple occasions, leaving my residence and its contents exposed for the better part of a month.Desired Settlement: [redacted] simply asked if anything was missing and indicated that he would reprimand the vendors. However, I would not pay rent for an apartment that did not have a functioning lock on the front door, and I would not leave my residence or wait to have that lock repaired for even one day. I do not see why I should pay a full month's rent under circumstances that effectively produced the same outcome. I would be satisfied with a refund of the month's rent or a pro-rated credit for next month's rent - approximately $925 - and assurances that the breakdown in communication and protocol is rectified.
