At Living Well we try very hard to make sure that patients know ahead of time their estimated out-of-pocket expenses based on what their insurance company has told us regarding their coverageIn fact, the initial estimate for *** *** service (which was estimated based on initial testing,
treatments, mid-term testing, then a second set of treatments, and a final test) was $4,Additionally, the patient took additional treatments beyond the estimated course at his and his provider's agreementTo the best of my recollection, before he went on with the additional treatments, he asked about coverage and I responded that charges would be the samePerhaps there was some confusion on his part that I meant that there would be no more charges added to what he had already incurred, when I meant that each additional treatment would cost the same as what the previous treatments were because he had not reached his out-of-pocket maximum with his insurance companyIf we had included the additional treatments in the original estimate, it would have been $5,The patient has paid $1,to date and has a balance ofActual charges are based on the insurance company's allowable charges; i.e., no matter how much is billed for a service it is reimbursed at what the insurance company allows, we accept what is allowedThe insurance company has helped to cause this problem, as they have been inconsistent with timing of processing and we have had to send in multiple rebilling/appealsIn the past, with other patients, when we have missed something or made a mistake on estimating, we have stuck to the original estimate and "eaten" the differenceWith this patient we are within the amount estimated plus the additional treatments ($(paid)+ $(owed)=$4,vs$5,132.24)However, because there may have been some confusion with the extra treatments as noted above, we offered the patient to pay $2,to settle his accountThis would bring his total to $3,vsthe original estimate of $4,117.74, a reduction over $1,from what we are rightfully owed and $less than the original estimate*** *** refused that offer and said he will just pay off his bill in $monthly installments, which we did not dispute, that is his decisionWe would have worked with him on a payment plan for the reduced amount, but he closed off conversation and I guess went to write this complaint. Again, we believe in making sure patients are given all the information up front so they can make a sound financial as well as medical decisionWe believe in the integrity of our business practices and will bend over backwards to serve our patients.
