Our providers are in-network with all BCBS plans except Advantage. BCBS cards used to state the plan they represented and were clearly marked Advantage. We asked the...
patient if the card had Advantage on it, she said no. We had no knowledge this identifier had been removed from the card by BCBS. We did not file the claim as "in network". We file all claims in the same manner and BCBS pays according to each particular plan, whether in or out of network. In fact, BCBS did pay the claim only later to ask for a refund due to out-of-network status. There was no billing error on our part. Our only recourse was to bill the patient. She asked if we would pay half of her remaining balance, but we already wrote off a portion off the charge. In our opinion, BCBS is responsible for this confusion, however we will absorb the $57.86 owed and not bill the patient further.
