Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2015/12/31) */
We were unable to duplicate the complaint the first day the vehicle was in the shop. Southtown Hyundai did do an ECM programming update as there was a bulletin to do so if the module's programming was below a certain level. [redacted] called in a...

couple of days later stating the the issue was still happening. Gary, the service manager, asked her some questions to shed some more light on how we could diagnose the issue. [redacted] stated that the issue was very sporadic, happened after driving vehicle for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes and if left sit, the vehicle would restart. She stated it was very inconvenient to take the vehicle to Edmonton for diagnosis, which is understandable when you have a 4 hour drive each way to do so. [redacted] was advised her that if she wanted to take her vehicle to [redacted] in Ft. McMurray she could, though, she would be responsible for any diagnostic charges (Hyundai warranty does not pay for diagnostics), [redacted] would have to get the part from our Hyundai store ([redacted] would be responsible for any shipping costs) and if the diagnosis was incorrect, Southtown Hyundai might not be able to claim the part under warranty. Alternatively she could bring the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis and repair. [redacted] acknowledged and stated she would call back with her decision. [redacted] called back a couple days later stating that she was going to try to get her brother to bring the vehicle into Southtown Hyundai. Southtown Hyundai drove the vehicle multiple times in an attempt to duplicate the issue which they were never able to do. Southtown Hyundai had a certified Hyundai technician with over 8 years of Hyundai experience, as well as command start installation experience, work on the vehicle. After being unable to duplicate the concern, the technician's initial diagnosis, which showed everything working properly, showed that this type of command start is installed in a way that if it is failing, the vehicle will not be able to start at all. Other command starts are installed so that if the command start fails, the vehicle can still be started. The technician went on to say that, in his experience, the [redacted] model in question does not have any reoccurring starting issues and that he has seen more starting issues caused by this particular command start. He stated that, in his opinion as he was unable to reproduce the issue, was to remove the command start for the sporadic starting issue. [redacted] was informed of this, she was skeptical which was understandable. An attempt to explain how the starting system works in the vehicle both without and with the command start was made, this frustrated [redacted]. She agreed to have the command start taken out but asked that she not be called further as the issue was causing her unnecessary stress. [redacted] paid $150 to have the starter removed, the work was done by an aftermarket vendor the next day. Additionally, a technical support case with Hyundai was created. When technical support is involved, the first step is to remove all aftermarket accessories as they can hinder the correct operation of the vehicle. We continued to try to reproduce the issue but still could not. Hyundai support, they had never seen a case where a [redacted] had a sporadic no start issue. After describing the issue to support, they suggested replacing the ignition switch though it was made clear that it was purely a guess. Southtown Hyundai ordered the ignition switch. [redacted]'s brother came in to attempt to recreate the issue for Southtown Hyundai. After taking the vehicle and driving it the issue was finally duplicated. He then showed an available Southtown Hyundai techncian the issue with the vehicle, which was fixed by taking the vehicle out of gear and putting it back into park. While the vehicle did not have any faults in the module indicating a faulty park/neutral safety switch, the switch was ordered as well to be replaced. The ignition switch and the park/neutral switch were both replaced under warranty at no cost to the customer. Southtown Hyundai drove the vehicle until warm and attempted to start it, it started normally. [redacted] then wanted the command start reinstalled, which Southtown Hyundai sent to an aftermarket vendor to have done, there was a $150 charge for this.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I don't believe they are being truthful when they say the other clamps were not toiched. The assistant manager explained to me that the clamps in question were tension clamps and if tightened were known to leak. There was no leak from these clamps before Southtown serviced my vehicle and the leak became a problem a short 3,000 km later. My experience with Southtown that day also included them replacing a brand new air cabin filter and attempting to charge me after I had specifically told them it did not need to be changed. I refused at the time to pay for that fraudulant charge and it was removed from my bill, [redacted]
