Installation of the wood on the stairs resulted in shortening the steps by 2 inches which made the steps steeper and dangerous.
A contract was entered into with Southwest Remodeling on 7-9-17 to install wood in my home for a total of $***. At that time I was 93 years old. I was not advised that the way the wood would be installed on the stairs would decrease the length of the stairs by 2 inches and thus making the steps shorter, steeper, and dangerous. On 12-18-2018 I had the wood removed by LA Carpets. The gentleman who did the removal of the wood told me that the way Southwest Remodeling installed the wood created a hazardous condition by actually shortening the length of the steps which made the steps steeper and dangerous. I was told that the way Southwest installed the wood was a cheaper way to do the installation and there were other installation methods that do not create the shortening problem. Southwest Remodeling did not inform me that their method of installing wood on the stairs would result in a danger to my well-being. Consequently, I slipped on the steps and broke by wrist in two place. I have pieces of the wood that was removed from the stairs as evidence.

Desired Outcome

Because I am 94 years old, I need assistance in resolving this situation. Because of the expense involved, I did not have LA Carpets remove the wood from two of the bedrooms, the living room or dining room. They only removed the wood from the master bedroom, one of the bedrooms, the stairs, and the hallway and then installed carpet in those rooms. In a perfect world, I would have had the wood removed from all rooms, but I would request that Southwest Remodeling refund the money for the stairs, the hallway, the master bedroom, and the guest room. As far as my broken wrist, I do not know how I can be compensated for the pain.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I do not accept the response from Southwest Remodeling because it is inaccurate and false. The $*** refund that *** refers to is a refund for switching the hardwood that I ordered for laminate. I paid Southwest $*** to install hardwood and the company refunded $*** for the "bait and switch" of substituting laminate if I signed an agreement not to sue them. I am in my 90's and I certainly did not want to go through a lawsuit, so I accepted the $*** for the laminate substitution. These are the circumstances to which *** refers.

After I fell on the steps and broke my wrist, I called a carpet company to remove the laminate and install carpet on the steps, the master bedroom, and the guest room. Due to the cost, I did not have the laminate removed in the dining room, living room, or the other two bedrooms.

When removing the laminate on the steps, the installer said, "Take a look at this." Southwest had installed a piece of laminate on each step that reduced the length of each step by two inches, which made the steps shorter and steeper creating a dangerous and hazardous condition. The installer told me that this a cheaper way to do the installation on steps and there are alternative installation methods. Please note that I have retained the laminate from the steps as evidence which proves my claim.

My wrist is now deformed permanently. My doctor said that sometimes this happens when the two main bones in the wrist are broken as in my case and I no longer have strength in my hand although the strength my return, but I do not know.

I expect and demand that Southwest Remodeling be held accountable. Because of the pain and permanent deformity of my wrist, I will pursue legal means if this matter cannot be resolved with Southwest Remodeling.

They rebuilt a porch deck which was excellent. they installed `1500 square feet of paving stones and put a filler between the pavers so that earth movement shows as cracks. It would have been better to let the pavers move independently and not cemented together as they were installed. They replaced termite damaged wood and painted with TEX COTE which is blistering in four to six inch bubbles which pop and peal. They are approved to apply TEX COTE products. We do not believe they applies the coating properly. Are they actually licensed to apply TEX COTE products?

How I wish I had read the reviews here before I became involved with this company. Beware, it is a SCAM preying on senior citizens. I won't repeat the method they use, but just add that the young man who visited me and convinced me that his was the cheapest price, that I "qualified" for the CA state loan, etc., and finally tried to convince me that he could obtain a no interest loan for me (for which I "qualified" of course) to pay the cost of replacing my driveway. Luckily I was in time to cancel my deposit check so suffered no monetary loss. I learned a lesson: follow your instincts when you sense something was not quite right at the beginning and check and double check a company's credentials! We seniors are the preferred prey of these scammers and we must remember that.
