Spencer’s Construction Company was hired to paint 3 bedrooms, the outside deck, repaint the wrought iron railing inside and repaint the wooden frame around the garage door for a cost of $3200. One main concern I had was that the owner, who initially came to see what had to be done and sent me a bid, never came to check on the work at any time during or after the job was finished even though I had concerns about the work.
The painting of the bedrooms was satisfactory. The deck started to peel within a month. I called the company and the original painter came out to touch up spots. Some of the wood between the boards was still bare from the pressure washing. When I asked him to be sure to cover all bare spots, the painter said he could not get between the boards or he would ruin his paintbrush. Another call to the company was made when the paint on the garage door buckled, within 2 months. The same worker was sent out, he started to scrape the door and said that the paint was buckling because there was moisture underneath and the wood was rotting. He was going to have the owner call me to see what can be done. The painter and I discussed replacing the board. Since this was a construction company, I thought they would be able to do that. After waiting 2 weeks for the owner to call, I called the owner and explained that since the company’s work is guaranteed, the painter should have told us the wood was rotting and the paint may not hold. However, that was not done. We were never told prior to applying paint, that the paint may not hold up, even though the painter knew it because he applied patching over the rotten wood.
I set up an appointment for the owner to come up and take a look. That meeting was cancelled by the office staff, not the owner, and another meeting was set up. However, I called the office back to reinforce that the company had been paid as soon as the work was completed, but the work was unsatisfactory. The person who answers the phone said he would have the owner call me and I could explain to him. Instead the office staff called back within an hour and said he had the contract in front of him and the contract said nothing about replacing any wood. I replied that I knew that, since I also had the contract, but that the painter should have told us that the painting was being done over rotten wood. He replied that I was told. I asked to have the owner call but was told that they had already made 3 trips up to my house, and they can’t work for me anymore. No attempt was made to rectify the situation.
I have contacted three different construction companies to come out and give me an estimate for replacing the board and repainting the frame, which will cost me more money. In the meantime, the frame, which is in the front of the house, looks terrible.
In addition, the wrought iron that was painted is either being rubbed off or I am seeing sections that were not painted. I did not get a chance to tell the owner about this because he has not and will not call. He also has not come to inspect the job and actually see what my concerns were. For these reasons, I would recommend against using this company.
