I sold a perfectly healthy puppy to the customer. They came to my home to pickup the puppy on December 19, 2015.The family left with the...

puppy and were completely happy with her. This puppy had no health concerns. She received a complete veterinarian checkup December 18 by a very thorough licensed veterinarian. I received a texted photo of a child holding the puppy later that same day telling me they were home with her and in love with her. I received another text photo December 25 telling me Merry Christmas and that they "absolutely love her". I also saw on her facebook page dated December 26 photos of the puppy along with several children at their home. The post was titled "Fun Christmas and a new puppy!!" The puppy was standing at a food bowl, eating in the photo. I was contacted January 13 for the first time, telling me the puppy seemed a bit painful since Christmas. Considering the fact that the puppy was perfectly fine up until that day, according to the customer's statement and photos, my concern is that the puppy was accidentally injured, possibly by one or more of the children that were there. Puppies are very squirmy and hyper, especially at this age. It is possible the puppy could have been dropped or somehow hurt. The customer said she presented with "sudden onset symptoms". Furthermore, based on the only record I ever received from them, several medications were given to the puppy that could contribute to her symptoms which seemed to worsen after receiving the meds. I offer a one year health guarantee against life threatening genetic defects for my puppies. I have certain stipulations in my guarantee that assure the puppy receives accurate care after leaving me. The first stipulation is to take the puppy to the vet within 48 hours of receiving her. This was not done. I also stipulate that if a life threatening genetic defect is found, the puppy must be returned to me, along with all papers and records. This was not done. Per my health guarantee, my vet has final say in determining if a life threatening gentic defect exists but since they did not return the puppy or provide any veterinarian records stating the puppy was euthanized, the guarantee is null and void. My guarantee also states that we do not offer a guarantee against negligence. My vet spoke with the customer's vet and they both agreed that there was no way of saying the issues could be contributed to a genetic defect. Further testing needed to be done and my vet would have done this, if they had returned the puppy to me as I asked and as my guarantee required. As stated in the complaint report, drugs administered for pain included CARPROFEN. Side effects of this according to the following website http://www.drugs.com/pro/carprofen.html
Carprofen Caplets, like other drugs of its class, is not free from adverse reactions. Owners should be advised of the potential for adverse reactions and be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug intolerance. Adverse reactions may include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or tarry stools, increased water consumption, increased urination, pale gums due to anemia, yellowing of gums, skin or white of the eye due to jaundice, lethargy, incoordination, seizure, or behavioral changes.
Neurologic: Ataxia, paresis, paralysis, seizures, vestibular signs, disorientation. Other drugs given this young puppy include: Gabapentin and Prednisone. Based on info found on the following websites, https://www.vetinfo.com/prednisone-side-effects-dogs.html and http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesandconditions/a/CW-Gabapentin.htm there are many similar side effects that may have contributed to the alleged deterioration of this puppy. Side effects listed for these drugs include Your pet should be monitored for signs such as incoordination or drowsiness.
Gabapentin is eliminated from the body almost entirely by the kidneys and urinary tract. Therefore, gabapentin should be used cautiously in animals suffering from kidney disease.
You should not stop giving gabapentin to your pet suddenly. Doing so can result in life-threatening seizure activity. The medication affects the absorption of salt and water, so dogs using the drug may experience symptoms related to an imbalance of these nutrients. Such effects may include water retention, excessive thirst and hunger, weight gain and frequent urination. Prednisolone medication may also disrupt a dog's digestive system, contributing to diarrhea and vomiting. Like other corticosteroids, prednisolone also effects the proper function of the canine immune system, so dogs may be more susceptible to infections while taking the medication. Other side effects sometimes associated with prednisolone use include:
increased panting
poor hair coat
thin skin
changes in behavior like aggression or lethargy
Dogs taking prednisolone for extended periods, like for the management of arthritis-related conditions, may be at risk for other adverse effects. These long-term symptoms include gastric ulcers, diabetes, liver damage, pancreatitis, muscle wasting and the hormonal disorder Cushing's syndrome.
I have been raising great quality puppies for over ten years and I have never had this issue before. I take pride in raising amazing dogs and I have a great clientele built up with many happy customers. I have many references listed on my website from my customers. Many of my customers have come back to me for their second and third puppy because they know we raise healthy puppies. I have both parents of this puppy and they are very healthy dogs with no health concerns. We have raised other puppies with these parents and have never had any health issues with their puppies. I have all of my veterinarian issued health records proving this puppy was healthy when she left me. If the customer would have followed the stipulations in my guarantee, we could have resolved this amicably. My health guarantee is posted on my website and my customers receive a copy of it with their puppy papers when they pickup their puppy. I always ask my customers to read and be familiar with it before they purchase one of my puppies. In trying to work out a resolution with this customer, I referred them to my guarantee several times so they would return the puppy, vet records, etc. to me but they refused. I actually have no proof of treatment or euthanasia for this puppy. I have been scammed many times by people trying to take advantage of me and my kennel so I have to have some proof. I have had people steal my photos and post them saying they are theirs and many other scams so I have to be careful in dealing with the public. This customer has not provided me with anything other than one initial report of pain which was sent to my vet. I stand by my guarantee of not issuing refunds for any reason. I also must receive proof of health concerns by a licensed veterinarian and the puppy and all papers must be returned to me before any replacement will be given. I cannot just take someone's word for this. This customer's actions made my health guarantee null and void.
