Complaint #*** Company Response This customer was given a set price and a very specific itemized list of the work we would performThe customer agreed via e-mail to pay us the amount stated for the work we described on the bid sheetWe did exactly what we said we would do, with the
exception of one thingI agreed to remove a lilac bush but instead we cut it to the groundThe customer e-mailed me stating that the work was not doneShe emphasized in her e-mail to me that we could not possibly be done because it only took to hours***, the team leader on this project who has been with me for nearly years took on this job with other employees who combined have been working for me for over yearsUpon being notified by the customer that the work was not complete, I took *** and some tools and headed to the customers houseI found the lilac was not dug out of the ground so I completely dug it out when I got thereI found every other item to be done exactly as I said it would be done on the bid sheetI asked the customer to walk the property with me as I had a copy of the bid sheet in handThe first thing she asked me was why the leaves, years of accumulation under the brush and trees we cut down, were not raked up and removedI told her that was not on our bid sheet nor did we discuss itWe could not even see them until the brush and trees were removedThe tree and brush removal also exposed a very small, beat up metal fenceThe customer asked why I did not remove the fenceAgain, with bid sheet in hand I explained to her that it was not on the bid nor did we discuss itI did express our willingness to add whatever services she would like and I would charge her accordinglyNext we walked to the back yardThe customer was visibly upset and expressed again that the project did not take us long enoughShe said she wanted us to cut one of her forsythia to the ground and one down to feet highBack to the bid sheet I went where I literally wrote that the forsythia would be cut to feet high, not to the groundThen the customer turned to the large lilac where we were to cut 1/of the tallest branches down, which we didShe said she did not think that they would all be cut from the middleI explained to the customer that that is where one third of the tallest branches happen to beThe customer then said I should have cut the dead wood out of the LilacNot on the bid, but I did tell the customer in that moment that I would be happy to cut out the dead wood now at no charge because there was not that much and I wanted to try to make her happyAs *** started to cut dead wood out of the lilac, the customer said to me that there is no way her husband is going to pay me $(the bill amount) for to hours workThat is when I told *** to stop working and I told the customer that we are not going to do free work for her after she expressed that her husband was not going to pay us for the work we already didThe customer than told me to get off her property and I said OKAs we walked off together the customer told me that she was going to tell other people about how bad my business isI then told the customer that that was OK with me because if she is the type of person who hires a small business and then does not pay her bill then she probably has friends that may do the same so I would not want to work for her friends anywayThe customer then made a comment about my business practice and I told her it was OK for her to be rude to me because it does not bother me.In the letter to the Revdex.com, the customer said “the side yard was not weeded or raked like we agreed upon”Weeding and raking of the side yard is nowhere in our bid sheet nor did we discuss itWe said in the bid that we would weed the beds on the left and in front of the house, and along the left side of the garageUpon our inspection there were no weeds found in those bedsThe customer stated to the Revdex.com that I refused to complete the work, but the job is completeThe customer stated to the Revdex.com that I was very rude to herThat is a straight up lieI am very polite and I was to the customerI used my soft voice the whole time I was explaining to her that we did exactly what we agreed to doThe customer is clearly hung up on the amount of time she said it took, and she was wrong about that too.The customer expressed again in the letter to Revdex.com that she would not have agreed to pay $for a job that took just hoursI have seen this before where people who do not own or operate small businesses think they can put their time frame on our servicesFirst off, this was not a by the hour bid nor was time indicated anywhere on this bidI have been in business for years and growing each yearMy employees have been with me from to just under yearsI buy the best equipment on the market and I have the best and most efficient employees I could ask forWe pride ourselves on the thousands of happy customers we have created though our kindness our expertise and our expedience. We have a contract, the customer agreed to itWe did exactly what we said we would do and now we just want to get paid the amount that the customer and I agreed toThe time it took us is irrelevant in this matter and that seems to be the only thing that this customer keeps bringing up. The customer was given an estimate to move from one house to another for $1550 plus a $100 flat rate fee for the use of a moving truck and a $50 flat rate fee for the use of a moving trailer (normally $100). Prior to the estimate, it was discussed that the customer would pack all non-furniture items...

into boxes. Based on that, it was estimated to take four movers approximately five hours to load the truck and trailer and three hours to unload. After receiving the estimate the customer asked to have the basement vacuumed. This additional service was not part of the original estimate and required an additional employee, resulting in additional costs. The customer was told prior to the move that the additional employee would help load the truck until the basement was ready to be vacuumed and the customer agreed. The accusation that there was no supervision for the move is wrong. The job took place on a Friday and knowing it would be a long day we sent four of our most experienced moving crew leaders as part of the five-man crew. Two of the moving crew leaders present for the move have been working together on moves since 2008. The four of them altogether have been moving together since 2011 or before. In 2014 we did approximately 370 moves and are on course to surpass that amount in 2015. Our movers are experienced and have worked together long enough to do their jobs well without the need for someone barking orders.            When the movers arrived the customer had not completed the packing of non-furniture items. Every room had a combination of boxes that were packed and many loose items that were not. The customer was working frantically trying to pack boxes while the movers tried to load the truck. This made it difficult to load the truck because the movers could not follow the standard loading procedure in use at the company since 1995 that ensures as much space as possible is filled while keeping the customer’s belongings safe. The standard loading procedure we use is to first fill the overhead compartment of the truck with smaller boxes. Once filled, larger boxes are stacked on the floor as high as possible. If there is any space left on top of the larger boxes, any remaining smaller boxes are placed on top. This creates a consistent wall of boxes. Next, mattresses, box springs, and bed frames are placed standing up against the wall of boxes. Then the tallest dressers are placed against the mattresses and box springs to hold them up, et cetera… This method has proven to be efficient and orderly but is dependent on the majority of boxes being ready to load on the truck before loading begins.Since the customer had not completed packing boxes prior to the arrival of the movers, boxes and items that should have been packed but were not had to be placed in the truck as they were made available. This took longer to do since the movers had to find safe places for items that should have been boxed up. It also meant that less air space could be filled inside the truck due to the irregular shapes of objects and the greater level of care needed to ensure the safety of individual items. It became apparent early on that the customer was not prepared for this move and that more help would be necessary to complete the move on that day.The sixth mover was added to the job when it became apparent that without them the move could not be completed in one day. Since the customer was not consulted about the additional employee, they were only billed at $20 an hour, a loss to the company. Here is a breakdown of the customer’s bill:2 moving trucks: $2001 moving trailer: $50 (discounted from $100)5 people for 2 hours at $200/hour: $4006 people for 5.5 hours at $220/hour: $1320 (discounted from $245/hour for 6 people)4 people for 2 hours at $175/hour: $3506 people for 1.75 hours at $197/hour: $345 (a discount of $275)1 person vacuuming the next day: $230Total: $2,895 When the movers arrived at the new house to unload there were contractors inside still doing work on the kitchen, limiting available space for the movers to put items. The customer was not present for most of the unloading. The customer attempted to label boxes and the rooms they were going into. Since the customer did not complete packing and labeling and was not present, the decision where items without labels would go was left up to the son-in-law. The movers were instructed to put most of the items not labelled into the second bedroom. The customer’s husband was present but did not have much certainty when asked where to put items. More time was wasted because the customer had asked the movers to setup a bed frame with headboard and footboard with a box spring and mattress in the master bedroom at the new house that were not compatible sizes. At approximately 6:30 PM, more than eight hours after the move started, the customer asked the movers to add a dump run and when told it would cost more the customer agreed to pay whatever the additional cost would be. The dump run included filling the trailer with junk, trash, and construction debris, and dumping city owned trash cans into the bed of a pickup truck. At no point did the customer seem at all concerned about paying any additional costs associated with their move.At approximately 7:30 PM the customer discussed vacuuming the basement the following day with the employee who would do the work. The employee told the customer that the vacuuming could take place at noon or shortly before and the customer responded by saying that earlier was better. The customer was given the employee’s personal cell phone number so she could contact the employee when he could do the job. The customer did not call the employee until approximately 3:45 PM. The employee then went to vacuum the basement at approximately 5:00 PM.Moving can be very stressful and overwhelming for customers. Our employees understand this and try to be accommodating during moves. The job was estimated to take a full workday of eight hours without any add-ons (vacuuming and dump run) and with all boxes packed prior to the arrival of movers. It is our belief that the customer was overwhelmed and unequipped to handle such a large move while simultaneously settling the closing of their old house. The customer needed their house emptied that day and the lack of preparedness combined with the addition of services caused the job to require more resources at a higher cost. We just want to be paid for the work performed. It should also be noted that resolving this has cost our company time and resources that cannot be not billed to the customer. [redacted], PresidentSpiritual Workers in a Physical World, Inc

Rejection of Spiritual Workers Inc. response : My wife and I are experienced in relocating our home, we have done it, probably, 7-8 times. We have never had a problem with  movers about the move or the invoice, that is until now. We have always found it to be the same "set up". We call for estimates, decide which is the best one for us and hire them to carry out the move. After the move an invoice is presented which is, in all cases the same as the original estimate. This has been with interstate, intercity and intertown moves. In all our moves we have always seen the same, 2-3 moving men AND the "man with the clipboard" ! This man does not help with the physical part of the move. He supervises and directs the other workers making sure the move goes smoothly with the least chaos as possible. Our gratuities are generous. As for our son his gratuities were based on the original estimate, he assures me there would be none if he had known about the exhorbitant bill. My wife carries out the packing as she has for all our moves, and none of it had been carried out "frantically"! My wife is not a frantic person and is well organised. (A retired RN). She did not hold up the loading at all, because there was no uniform loading, the movers grabbed anything close at hand and took it to the truck. there were a lot of "is this going ?"I was agreeable to the estimate, we did not "shop around" because Spiritual Workers, Inc. was recommended by our realtor, and she had previously passed on some valuable contacts. No contract was signed between us because Spiritual Workers Inc. was adamant that they would not make a written contract because that was the way they did their business. On the day scheduled for moving the movers pulled up outside the house on [redacted] Street. I was a bit perplexed by the vehicles.  1 Box truck (?) 1 pick-up truck and a trailer. I asked my wife if all our belongings were going to fit, she presumed that Spiritual Workers Inc. knew what they were doing. Unfortunately that was not true.I watched while young men seemingly grabbed anything at hand and put it in the truck, I saw no supervision whatsoever. The young men conjured up the impression of college/university students on their summer break.Eventually everything was loaded on the 3 vehicles, although my wife had to stop them from leaving because there were other articles including large picture frames that had not been loaded. I believe, but will stand correction, that another pick-up truck was involved. Unloading was a nightmare! The young men were bringing in boxes furniture, and the like asking where they should put them. Everything was labelled with a number or description of their destination and their destination was marked in the same way. After the move we found many, many goods etc. in the wrong places, I assume they didn't ask us about them !Of the items on the invoice that is most puzzling are the charges for vehicle rental. I have never come across such a thing. Why are we expected to pay for vehicle rental ? Isn't that part of Spiritual Workers Inc. business expenses? Most moving companies own their own moving vans. It has always been my idea that price - costs = profit. Why all the discounts we were magnanimously awarded ? Are we such nice people? Oh perhaps senior citizen discount ? Or was the price being too inflated beyond acceptance ? To add inane comments as "barking orders" really shows up the disorganisation and ignorance of these movers. Yes they can write down the "manual" but actually following those procedures is a different matter. For Spiritual Workers Inc. information I was present at loading and unloading, perhaps they do not know me by sight, they dealt with my wife. I in fact read the destinations to the movers, I was in what was labelled "LR" ie Living Room. Did they deposit the goods in the right place ? I have no idea. It was chaotic and I had to deal with more than one mover asking where to deposit their articles even though they were labelled. That was one of the problems, the movers seemed to have a big problem, even when directed, matching up the goods and furniture to their destinations. Hence the amount of misplaced goods and furniture. To even mention the bed is grossly inappropriate any movers would assemble bed frames as a courtesy. That the parts of the bed were incompatible delayed the move ? How long did it take the movers to find out the parts were incompatible ? 1 hour ? 2 hours or more ? My guess would be 5 minutes or 10 at most. The owner apparently hired a lawyer bill collector to frighten us into paying, although we had not indicated to anyone that we were not going to pay. We needed time to check the bill, given the number. The lawyer bill collector sent us a letter on September 11th 2015, demanding payment by September 21st 2015 or face the threat of a lawsuit. The invoice was dated September 4th 2015. I asked her to stop communicating with us, and it seems she did. I believe that this move was beyond the experience and resources of the movers in light of an inaccurate estimate submitted by the owner. At one time the lawyer bill collector alleged we changed what was estimated to larger amount to be moved, a ludicrous accusation, but one suggesting we committed fraud. In Spiritual Workers Inc. response is the accusation that the contractors were the cause of delay. Nothing could be further from the truth. The contractors tried to be as helpful as they could and even  made spaces for the articles being unloaded. Is Spiritual Workers Inc. going to blame anybody else to excuse their ineptitude ? Regarding the estimate, the owner of Spiritual Workers Inc. was at [redacted] after we called for an estimate. He saw what was entailed in the move, the 4 floors,  basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor, the attic, the garage and the garden shed. Also the move required a journey to be taken of approximately 250 yards from door to door.Of course we expected to pay for the dump run, which did not include any city-owned trash cans. What we did not expect was an invoice that was more than half again of the original estimate. The major cause of the delay and chaos of the move was the inaccurate estimate made by the owner. Had he made a proper estimate, the move would have gone a lot smoother, perhaps. I propose a payment of two thousand and thirty dollars ($2030.00), consisting of : Original estimate - $1550.00Cleaning basementand dump run          230.00Vehicle rental        250.00Total               $2030.00

I have reviewed the response submitted by the business and have determined that the response does not satisfy or resolve my issues and/or concerns in reference to complaint # [redacted]. Please add your rejection comments below.
Nothing that we have written is incorrect, otherwise there would be no complaint. The responsibility for the problems lay at the owner's feet, for making a disastrous incorrect estimate. Was this intententional ? It would be correct for Spiritual Workers, Inc. to accept the check in the sum of $2030.00 we have sent, which is based on the estimate given plus reasonable extras. [redacted]
