to Aprile
Hi April,

I apologize in the delay for getting you this feedback but as you know, preparing for a move and starting a new job can be overwhelming!

We were really disappointed with the communication, quality of work, and follow through on the this job. I'd like to explain below.

When you came to give recommendations I wrote down everything you suggested and your pricing (photo attached). This originally included some work in the backyard, (trimming, soil & grass seed where fire pit was, removing extra stone in back, cut back branches). I asked you twice to please send me a written quote, which I never received. With a full days labor and all the supplies you quoted me the total job would be around $800. You said it probably wouldn't take a full day, however.

Later, I texted you and told you we couldn't go over $500 budget. So, to save money and labor, we did the backyard ourselves, we removed the extra bush, at your suggestion, in the front ourselves- which we still have here to dispose of (even though in your text to me you said you removed the bush) and we trimmed down the front bushes ourselves so that they would mainly need shaped. You said you could charge us an hourly rate of $86 an hr. With a $100 min. This would leave you to shape the bushes, plant the begonias in the front, plant flowers around mailbox (which was never done), and soil/fertilize/and grass seed the small area the tree was removed.

I had to text you at least twice to ask when you could get us scheduled for the job. Communication wasn't optimal. You didn't show on the day you were supposed to and texted me that evening saying you'd be there first thing in the morning.

The morning you arrived you asked me several times to remind you what we talked about doing, (had you sent me a quote all of this info would have been listed out...) even after our in person conversation you called me (because I had left the house) to ask again about the work discussed. At this point you told me the job wasn't going to take nearly as long as you thought. You had been there less than 2 hrs.

When I arrived back at the house you forgot about the mailbox. When I mentioned it, you put mulch around it. Originally, there was supposed to be flowers planted there. Also, there was a large dead looking portion in one of the front bushes that I had to point out to you. I said that I thought it looked weird and you said, "yeah..looks like it sprouted a baby. Jose, please take that part out." At this point I was frustrated and just wanted the job finished.

On the last job you completed you gave us the receipts for all the items you purchased and left us the remainder of products that we paid for that wasn't all used (soil, sand bags, round up, etc.) You stapled all of those receipts to an invoice and when the job was complete and we paid that invoice.

On this job, you did not give us copies of any receipts for the items we were charged for: soil, grass, fertilizer, and 5 flats of flowers you originally quoted. How many flats were actually used? Does the attached photo include $70 of begonias? You also didn't leave any unused product that we were charged for like you did on our last job....soil, fertilizer, grass seed, etc.

You didn't provide me with a itemized invoice when the job was completed. Which you did on our last job. When I asked you for an invoice you seemed a bit irritated. You said, "I mean, I guess I can write one up for you." I gave you my email and this is what you sent. Nothing is itemized. It doesnt show how many flats of flowers were purchased, how much soil, etc...

For a professional landscaping company, I feel as though this job was poorly communicated, executed, and the results fall short of what we asked for.

We came to you with a task. To give the front yard curb-appeal for selling it. We had $500 to spend. We told you to do whatever you thought to get this job done and trusted you for the outcome. You sold us on your confidence and great ideas. We put our trust in you, as we don't know anything about landscaping.

The attached picture is the final result. Do you feel as though you did what we asked? The big gap left after we took the bush out looks terrible. We assumed that you planned on filling the entire area with the 5 flats of begonias. We would had never removed it had we known you were going to leave a big blank space there.

I guess I would ask you this question- Would you be proud to post this picture publicly as your work when given the task to add curb appeal to the front?

We are not asking for any further work to be done. We have another landscaper coming out to quote us on how to make this look better for the least amount of money. I do think it would be prudent to at least offer us a partial refund on this job due to all of the reasons stated above. I understand you were busy having just moved however, if you knew you couldn't give our job the time and attention we were paying for you should have declined the job.

*See photos attached - everything highlighted in pink were my notes the day you came for a quote.

to me
***, I checked all receipts and from your most recent service and also your prior service (from a some time back) I completed your service for less than I quoted both times. We also mowed your lawn front and back at no additional charge. The fact that your ask for discount the both times I done your service, tells me that you ask for "more" no matter what I could have offered to you. What I done for you was more than fair. Feel free to check competitive companies and they would have charged you the same or more. I am happy with what we done for you and what we charged you. Feel free to express your concerns and so will I.

to Aprile, ***, me
Aprile,

We are shocked and disappointed with your response. It is full of dishonest accusations.

I also have all of the receipts and invoice for the patio job you completed for us in 2015. (Picture attached.) We told you our top budget for this job was $2000. It ended up costing us $2789.80 total, which we paid with no complaint even though it was almost $800 over our budget! You said the labor took longer than you had anticipated.

Also, we never once asked for a discount. The $43.81 credit was for supplies you purchased (and ended up not using it all or returning it) on the *** receipt shown. That is why you wrote it on the receipt- where it shows credit discount and then "I paid supplies" $43.81 in the other section (also is the picture attached.) So either you have forgotten or you are outright lying. Both of the statements you made saying you completed the first job for less than quoted, and that we asked for a discount on that job, are completely false statements.

Secondly, you didn't answer any of the questions I asked in my original email nor did you present me copies of receipts and the itemized list for what we paid for that I requested.
I would like to see the receipt for the 5 flats of flowers that you said you would plant and quoted us $70. You stating that you "came in under budget" has nothing to do with me asking you to send a breakdown of fees and a copy of receipts of what we paid for. You also didn't give a reason for why you didn't leave any leftover product that we paid for like you did in 2015. If you had left those items, at least we could have used the soil and bought more begonias on our own to fill in the big empty spot left by the bush that we took out per your suggestion. Lastly, you had nothing to say about the level of communication and lack of professionalism. Again, I would somewhat understand this type of behavior had we not been dealing with a so-called "professional" company.

Also, I did take your advice last night and asked a local landscaping company from *** that has 45 positive reviews to give me a second opinion on this job. He stated that they aren't the cheapest around but they have excellent customer feedback. I sent him the before and after pictures, the invoice you sent me, and the email communication. I asked him for his honest feedback on the job. He stated that it was high for what was done and that he would have charged $350 total for the completed job labor and supplies as well as receipts for supplies. I have screenshot of the text below. He also said the begonias can be purchased at *** for $1.50 each. We have a total of 16 planted; 8 on each side.

I did some digging and visited your website. You do state "Spitshine Landscaping is committed to your client's service and satisfaction and dedicate yourself to the upmost ethical standards." You can go here to see this statement. This doesn't seem to be the case. We expressed dissatisfaction with this job. Not only did you not offer any resolutions, you replied with lying accusations. So very unprofessional.

Your business does not have a Google verified listing so that clients can leave reviews, you have no client reviews on your website, you do not have a business Facebook page where clients can leave reviews either. I should have taken heed to these red-flags. I know better than that...

Sadly, we feel we must file a complaint with the Revdex.com and include copies of all of our communication and support documentation. This is so very disappointing to me and my husband. We will not put any more money into the front yard as we have decided to rent for now. Once we decide to sell, we will be sure to use the other landscaper in the future.

Feel free to respond or not; your choice.

to Aprile, ***, me
Aprile,

We really don't want to have to file a complaint. We would like to give you one last chance to follow-up with us, send us copies of the receipts of the items we purchased, and give an explanation for all the items we brought to your attention.

If we don't hear back from you by Friday, we will move forward.

END OF EMAIL THREAD. NO RESPONSE FROM BUSINESS OWNER. We gave her an additional 3 days to respond.

This ladies job was quoted at $800 I done her job for total of $450, nearly half. Not sure that I ever got the message requesting receipts. Which I do have. We mowed, edged, and blew the her yard, cleaned out a flower bed, trimmed hedges that had not been touched in quite some time and added a number of flats of begonias. Also prepared the ground with soil, seed, fertilizer and Hay in an area where a tree was removed. I've been in business 21 years and never had a complaint. I think this lady was extra stressed because her husband had taken a new job and they were going to have to move out of state quickly. All I done was tried to help her doll her yard up to sell! Nothing I could have done would have made her happy.Thank You. Aprile Gregg see attached

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.

Our desired outcome is for the business to provide copies of receipts, an itemized invoice, left-over product that we purchased OR a 20% refund if she cannot provide any of those items.

NO copies of receipts were provided, no itemized invoice was provided, no left-over product was provided OR a 20% refund - which WAS NOT provided.

Hello,

1. The receipt from *** Greenhouse and Nursery doesn't indicate items purchased or itemized pricing. Please submit the itemized receipt so that we know what we paid for and how much per unit.

2. We were never told that we would be charged a $75 debris haul away fee. The attached text shows we were told we "Yes, we can remove the chips and do an hourly rate. The hourly rate of $86 per hour or $600 for a full day's labor" Had we known we would be charged $75 to haul away debris we would have done it ourselves to save money. We had already removed one bush ourselves and had to haul it away so had we known we were paying extra for that we would have already had that done. This was not communicated clearly.

3. One of the receipts showed we paid $17 for a 9.6 lb. bag of Fescue grass. Can you please explain how 9.6 lbs of fescue grass seed was needed for a 7 foot round area of grass from where the tree was removed?

4. We were recently told by our new lawn company that the WRONG grass was planted in the area the tree was removed. Our lawn grass is Bermuda and she purchased and planted Fescue only in the area where the tree was removed. He said the fescue grass would stay green while the bermuda grass in the rest of the lawn will go brown in the fall/winter time. I am attaching a picture of the area. The grass she planted didn't really grow but I don't blame her for this because she told us it was very hot to be planting and it might now take off like it should.

5. Can you please explain how you mowed, edged, etc. for "no charge" when we paid hourly for labor? You didn't stay longer than the hours we paid for so I understand what you are saying here?

Thanks you.
