Honesty is always the best policy. I went into the Houston TX. Location and spoke with the salesman.
I looked over many of the production safes and some specials. The prices were the best of all the other safes I looked at for the past 3 years. Especially a safe with .25" plate. I decided to purchase the Special Forces safe with a .25" plate steel and the gun pegs on the door.
The order date 03/22/2016 ship date about 6-8 weeks.
I paid the down payment we were off and running.
The shipping date on the BOL is 06/23/2016 and the safe arrived the next week. So about 5 weeks to long.
I unpacked the safe and got it into the house and began my inspection.
1. The cosmetics were terrible example: carpet was left unattached in some of the shelf rails and around the door
2. The welding was not cleaned up and had welding wire left behind on the back side of the door. I almost cut my hand on the wire.
3. The bottom door hinge had a small rod sticking out probably to try and tighten the hinge pin.
4. The over depth dimension was 3" short. It was supposed to be 28" and came in 25".
5. The door open to 90d and then became hard to open any further. The door is supposed to open with little effort.
Ok I was disappointed but I took the calm approach and sent in pictures of the poor quality and called the QC at Sportsman Steel in California. After a few days I received a call from the QC and after a discussion he had the manager call. After we talked the decision was to take the matter to his boss. About a week later the manager called and decided to return this safe and make me a new one. I agreed. The second safe arrived 11-18-2016 at the Houston TX location. I went and look it over. The safe was 100% better. They delivered it to my House on 11/22/2016 and took the other safe back at no charge to me.
I got the safe I wanted and it is great and only took 8 months. To their credit I suspect they are very busy and business it good. They resolved all the issues very professionally and at no expense to me.
Do I recommend Sportsman Steel Safe? Yes
But I can also add that anytime you special order a safe from any company you can expect a longer manufacturing time and if there is an issue it takes longer to resolve. You have to be very thorough when pursuing a resolution and don't give up. I read other reviews on other safe manufactures and the same problem existed so do the research. It you want as safe id is quicker to buy one off the show room floor. Sportsman Steel Safe has many to choose from and are good looking safes.
