We hired *** Michaud of St Louis Construction and Design (formerly St Louis Builds) originally to do a garage or shed for us, but due to cost, time and building restrictions, we settled on creating a patio & pergola & pond. Our Dream! He told us time and again he was very capable and knowledgeable to build these.
We contracted with him to install stamped concrete patio ( roughly 25x20), install wood Pergola over patio - not attached to house; form and pour concrete rectangular pond opening (roughly 4x10). Bid proposal was $18,200.00. We added a lower BBQ patio & lower patio next to pond later and paid him another $6,000.00 for these. Told us 2-6 weeks to complete project.
It is OVER 3 MONTHS now. He's left the job.
We paid *** directly in checks made payable to *** consulting.
10/15/2019- $5,000.00 check #1764 for materials
2/17/2020 - $1,000.00 venmo for drawings
4/20/2020 -$6,000.00 check #***work officially started 4/21/20*
6/12/2020 - $2,200.00 (+ $5.00 cash) check #2098 for overage expenses he incurred
6/29/2020 -$6,000.00 check #***- stated he would not pour until paid; overages in scope
We paid him our savings to make our Dream space for us. It is a Nightmare.
He took complete advantage of our trust, our time, our kindness, and our finances.
He is a charlatan and a thief.
Patio is poorly formed, stamped, water pools by door, workmen footprints in concrete (!), inconsistent coloring & pattern, and undermining of rock from under pour. Lacks integrity.
Pergola is STILL missing boards, AND boards he told us (7 times) he would replace because warped...no one ever did. No expansion compound around wood piers.
Pond is a complete disaster. Out of square and bowing (!)on both sides; unlevel, concrete piles & trash all over area & yard and no reinforcement in concrete, honey combed and lacks integrity.
We had concrete people review his job site. Multiple contractors said it will may need to be demolished and replaced.
He wasted our time & money.

I tried multiple times to reconcile with them it seems as though they would rather not resolve things. For example the rough concrete in question is all getting veneered in stone and was never meant to be seen. We Completed a koi pond in which the customer had promised to help with the build as we were both learning together, Which I wound up paying to do instead, and the icing on the cake I did not charge him more than $650 dollars extra plus maybe a thousand in the original budget for said 5x11x4’deep koi pond as the budget was already thin according to what they say they could afford and I felt badly for them. This cost me at least thousands out of pocket including my time. Also the koi pond was set to get an acrylic Portland finish coat on the inside of it to give it a nice smooth finish as I explained to them.
The concrete where the gravel is showing is on top of other concrete where stonework was to be laid to retain said gravel. They have not paid More than the value of the work that has been done. In fact they are ahead of me by probably a few thousand dollars. We had delays because more and more work was being added, more concrete work, larger koi pond, more stone work as well as removing a giant stump that was in the middle of the koi pond which they said they were going to take care of, instead I paid subs for a week while digging the koi pond to take care of this stump, as well as trenching for electrical across the yard
Two trenches for utilities….all add ons which I charged very little for. To sum up there were many delays besides the large amount of rain that were beyond my control…… I would love to resolve things with them rather than battle ….Im too busy and have no interest in a fight.
The final delay was their lack of stone selection I texted and emailed them and met with them multiple times on this subject and no selection was ever made. This is the main final delay for the final phase of the project which would have alleviated a lot of their concerns as the gravel and the rough pour that was to be veneered in stone to beautify their project. I am happy to provide a spreadsheet showing the cost breakdown of work preformed….they were really getting a great deal and it is probably a $35,000 project they were getting for a deep discount, I am very sad that things turned out like this as I considered them friends, which is why I was trying to give them a good deal.
