St Mark's Coffeehouse Reviews (1)

This is a response to complaint number [redacted] by [redacted] against Saint Mark's Coffeehouse at [redacted] in Denver.        Saint Mark's Coffeehouse has been in business here in Denver for 25 years.  Since our first day in business, we have...

always had the work of local artists displayed on our walls.  It is part of the ambiance of the coffeehouse and we have shown some really good  paintings, drawings, prints and photography over the years. And some not so good ones, too.  We display the art work of local artists and occasionally we sell some of their work, for which we usually charge the artists 20 percent of their sale price.  We have  never used a formal contract with artists for these art shows.  We have a verbal agreement with the artists.  We ask them to hang their own work at the start of their show and to remove their work at the end of the show, which is usually a month long.  If we sell a piece of art, we collect the payment, charge sales tax, process the credit card, deliver the piece to the purchaser, and pay the artist for the sold art  piece minus the 20 percent commission at the end of the art show.  Art sales represent a very very small part of our business, but the display of local art work is important to us, none the less.       [redacted] has displayed her art at Saint Mark's Coffeehouse several times over the years.  She is familiar with how we run the art shows and I believe she has even sold some of her art work through us in the past.  She was scheduled to have another art show with us again, as she says in her complaint.  And, as she says I cancelled her show a month before She was scheduled to hang her work.  The reason I cancelled her show is because she claimed that she would not be able to hang her show.  She told me that she was not physically able to hang her art show and that she would need help. She also claimed that she might injure herself trying to hang her art work.  We have never helped artists hang their work, as we do not have the time or man power to do so.  If artists need help, they bring their own people to help them.  When [redacted] mentioned the risk of injuring herself, I cancelled her show.  I felt that no art show was worth the risk of bodily injury.        [redacted] mentioned that there was some sort of requirements made of her as to the size of her art. I have included the emails I have between [redacted] and the art curator who was in charge at the time. We did not request her to paint art work of a certain size.  We did ask, as we always do,  that there be sufficient art work to make a good show.        I have worked successfully with hundreds of artists over the years, including with [redacted], and we have had hundred of art shows at Saint Mark's Coffeehouse.  I have never cancelled an art show before.  But l felt that the tone of the conversation with [redacted] had become demanding and threatening and I was no longer interested in showing her work.  Thank you for your time.            [redacted]
