Our experience is that Coy Construction and its owner Mike McCoy are completely unprofessional and untrustworthyMike: - knowingly used 20+ year old and/or untreated wood on the understructure of our deck, which I can only assume was an attempt to to save a few dollars in material costs - insisted there were not, and could not possibly be, any problems with our deck until we showed him pictures of the completely rotten wood - played all kinds of games with us as we tried to get him to fix the problem, and - ultimately refused to take responsibility for or stand behind his shoddy work Coy Construction built a Trex deck for us in There were a few hiccups during construction but we basically thought everything was OK at that time Between 2014/we noticed that the steps onto the deck were beginning to weaken and sag a little bitWe didn't think much of it and thought we could just tighten some of the screws to take care of itThat didn't work because the screws didn't seem to be able to catch anything to tighten the decking into The steps got progressively weaker over time until they were starting cave inWe could see through the cracks of the decking that the wood underneath seemed to be rotting awayIt got to the point in summer where we essentially had to stop using the deck because it became a safety issue On Sept 9, we contacted Mike McCoy and said we understood the warranty had expired but wanted to have him come look at itWe just wanted it fixed and even offered to pay for the repair if he wouldn't cover itHe said he would send someone out within a week or so and "The wood framework is Treated Pine will never rot just looks like the Trex needs a couple screws." Twelve days later on Sept we still hadn't heard from or seen anyone so we asked if he was still planning to send someone outHe said yes No one had come out by Oct so we told him we just wanted it fixed and if he wouldn't or couldn't do it we would need to have someone else come see what was going on and fix itThe next day he said he would come out "in the next or days." By Oct the step had almost completely fallen apart so we pulled the decking off and all of the wood underneath was completely rotten and disintegratedBased on what was under the steps we said we were concerned about what might be under the rest of the deckHe said that "your deck is fine" and "there is no need to worry about the substructure of your deck .it will pretty much last forever" He said again he would come out and I said I wanted to be there to look at it with himHe kept saying we didn't need to meet and said he would come out at some point in the next couple of daysI insisted on being there when he came out Without advance notice or asking me to check my schedule on Oct he said he would be at my house in minutes I told him that wouldn't work for me so he reluctantly agreed to meet me on Oct instead, but couldn't meet my request to meet in the morning or later in the afternoon so I had to take off from work during the middle of the day to meet him When we met on Oct he acknowledged that the step needed to be fixedHe told me they used cedar under the step but assured me they used treated pine under the rest of the deckOf course at the beginning of this whole thing he insisted that they used treated pine everywhereI wasn't sure why they would use cedar on the framework as my understanding is that it would more typically be used for the actual deckingMike didn't offer an explanation or an apology for the state of the stepsI told him I was worried about the rest of the deck and wanted him to take up a couple of boards so we can see what it looked like under thereHe said again several times that there is no need to do that because they always use treated pine and our deck would basically last foreverHe said someone would come out and fix itI insisted that my wife or I needed to be there when it was done so that we could see what they were doing and because I wanted them to take up a couple boards to look at the rest when they fixed itHe said someone would come out in the next few days On Nov still no crew at our house so I emailed him again about scheduling something and asked for a day or two notice so we could arrange to be home At 8:am on Fri Nov someone emailed us (no phone call) and said someone was coming at noon that dayI emailed back and said that wouldn't work for us and asked if they could reschedule for the following weekI never received a response and that is the last I heard from Mike or anyone in his office Winter was coming, we needed to get the steps fixed, and I was tired of playing games with MikeAnd more importantly I no longer had any trust in him or faith that he would do the right thing, or anything at allSo we hired someone else to do the jobThe contractor that ultimately fixed it said that in order to avoid digging out the old footings with the old wood, Coy used the existing footings and old step understructure to save time and money They new contractor had to dig out the old footings -- a difficult task -- and then pour new footings with new, treated lumber Even though I was pretty sure what the outcome would be, on Jan 8, 2016, I sent the $invoice from the guy who fixed our deck to Mike and asked if he would reimburse us in light of the facts that the deck had not been built correctly and his inability or refusal to schedule the repair over the almost three months we had been asking him do itI was again disappointed, but not at all surprised, that we did not get a response of any kind to this request At this point we are not sure if there are other parts of the deck that used old or untreated wood for the understructureFor now we are crossing our fingers The bottom line is that I would never recommend that anyone hire Coy Construction

Recently had Coy Construction rework out rear deck A very large project Was very impressed with their work His crew was awesome, excellentReviewed the project with Brian Coy, he provided a reasonable quote, explained everything in detail and delivered on time We reviewed comments earlier on Revdex.com related to their business, apparently they have addressed the issues from the past because we did not experience any problems with their workmen ship or communication

5/23/
Coy just completed a deck restoration project for meThey did an excellent job with every phase of the project, including design, construction and clean-upUpon completion, there was one small problem with the jobUpon notifying Coy, they promptly came out and fixed the problemI highly recommend this company

WHERE TO BEGIN
I hired Mike Skarwecki (Coy Construction, Marysville WA) for separate projects in the backyard of my home; a stairway for my elevated deck, an exposed aggregate concrete patio, and a fence around my backyard
The stairway would be approximately 15’ in height with one change in direction A seemingly simple enough task, however, the quality of work was so bad (unlevel, mix matched wood, no flashing installed where the stairway was drilled into the side of house, etc.), that I had to stop him and hire a separate company to intervene, tear down what he had built and start all over
Not only did Mike Skarwecki (Coy Construction) completely screw up my patio deck stairway, he totally and utterly botched the exposed aggregate patio he told me he could build, “No problem.”
For starters, instead of exposed aggregate, he poured a brushed finishIf that wasn’t bad enough, the brushed finish was SEVERELY cracked, pitted and uneven throughout Consequently, I had to hire a separate concrete company to come in and excavate Mike Skarwecki’s concrete job and re-pour a whole new patio
Last but not least, Mike Skarwecki (Coy Construction) absolutely flubbed my backyard fence The fence line was so bad (nails bolted unevenly and in every which direction, doors hinged so unevenly they wouldn’t close shut, etc.), that my neighbor refused to split the cost of our shared portion I was so embarrassed at the quality of the fence, I still apologized to my neighbor despite the fact he refused to pay
Mike Skarwecki (Coy Construction) managed to stretch this whole debacle out for approximately months before he completely ghosted on me 99% of the time, he was unresponsive to phone and email communication It would take days and sometimes weeks for him to shand work on the projects His excuse to me was, “The commute is too far..” During my last face to face interaction with Mike Skarwecki, I asked him for an explanation on all of the aforementioned disasters he created in my backyard His only response was, “No excuses, I’ll fix them..” MrSkarwecki then drove off into the sunset never to return again
Working with Mike Skarwecki (Coy Construction) was one of the biggest mistakes of my life I’m still contemplating a law suit...If only I could post the pictures on here!

Coy Construction built a Trex deck for us in There were a few hiccups during construction but we basically thought everything was OK at that time
Between 2014/we noticed that the steps onto the deck were beginning to weaken and sag a little bitWe didn't think much of it and thought we could just tighten some of the screws to take care of itThat didn't work because the screws didn't seem to be able to catch anything to tighten the decking into
The steps got progressively weaker over time until they were starting cave inWe could see through the cracks of the decking that the wood underneath seemed to be rotting awayIt got to the point in summer where we essentially had to stop using the deck because it became a safety issue
On Sept 9, we contacted Mike McCoy and said we understood the warranty had expired but wanted to have him come look at itWe just wanted it fixed and even offered to pay for the repair if he wouldn't cover itHe said he would send someone out within a week or so and "The wood framework is Treated Pine……will never rot……just looks like the Trex needs a couple screws."

On Nov still no crew at our house so I emailed him again about scheduling something and asked for a day or two notice so we could arrange to be home
At 8:am on Fri Nov someone emailed us (no phone call) and said someone was coming at noon that dayI emailed back and said that wouldn't work for us and asked if they could reschedule for the following weekI never received a response and that is the last I heard from Mike or anyone in his office

Met with owner Mike Coy and he drew us up a plan for a new deck at 16' x 22'Put out deposit down and signed paperwork to get things goingThe day comes for the post holes to be plotted out and all of a sudden the deck is 12' x 22'Mike back peddles and says he quoted us at 12' instead of 16'All of our drawings that HE drew and recommended are at 16'We never even mentioned 12'Don't even know where that number came fromHis price HE wrote is on HIS drawing at 16' and now he wants to upcharge us $to add an extra 4'We've waited over a month for the process to begin to find out he's pulling a bait and switch on usHe must have mis-quoted and is coming up with every excuse to take the blame off himselfALL POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS BEWARE! Save yourself the time and headache and look elsewhere
