Do NOT hire Stefanie R[redacted] to work for you or your company in any capacity! I hired her to work on a major remodel/addition for my home; subsequently, I dealt with her nearly every day for eight months. Although she does have a good eye for color and design, Stefanie does NOT have a good eye for size, proportion or placement (perhaps a tape measure would be a helpful tool to use for someone in her profession!). She is also incredibly deceitful, manipulative, unprofessional, unorganized, inefficient, unfocused on important details and shockingly unknowledgeable about the remodel process generally.
Twenty minutes into our initial meeting Stefanie began sharing highly personal details about her troubled romantic relationships. Over the next eight months she prattled incessantly about her online dating problems and financial and other personal woes. She was so focused on sharing her personal issues with me that it was always difficult to redirect her attention back onto my project.
Stefanie constantly boasted about her decorating talent, which struck me as not only obnoxious but also pathetic and desperate. She consistently made excuses while over-promising and under-delivering. Even though I had only asked her to decorate two rooms in my home, she never finished the job after eight months. On numerous occasions she told me about some perfect item she had found for my home, but could never produce photos or even tell me where it was located after my asking repeatedly. I believe that she was lying to me in an effort to convince me that she was earning her pay, and to delay finding pieces for my home so I would buy her personal property that she was continuously pitching.
Stefanie also managed to continually inject drama into my project as she battled with my general contractor (GC), his subs, another client and even her own trades. In fact, her animosity towards my GC was a major contributing factor to my project’s delays, setbacks and mistakes. Stefanie is not a team player and never took responsibility for errors or complications; instead, she placed the blame on colleagues rather than working with them in the best interests of me her client. Her own finish trades even shared their frustrations with me about her knack for generating and perpetuating unnecessary drama.
Stefanie was very unorganized and inefficient. I had to follow up with her again and again on the same matters. I learned over time to meter out tasks in order to avoid overwhelming her. I could have done most of the ordering/contracting/scheduling/follow up work faster and more effectively myself, even while working full time. Her finish trades similarly complained that she wasted a lot of their time not only due to her unpreparedness and general cluelessness, but also due to her constant jabbering about her romantic struggles. For our shopping trips she never planned the itinerary in advance, so we wasted time visiting places that weren’t even open. Instead of visiting showrooms in a logical order based on location, she meandered all over the metro area and frequently got lost. She also managed to lose the original keys for several of my new doors, which will require me to spend hundreds of dollars to hire a locksmith.
Throughout the remodel Stefanie demonstrated to me that she was completely out of her depth; she had clearly misrepresented her experience in managing large remodel projects. She never caught paperwork mistakes, whether they were errors pertaining to the actual order details or errors related to costs, credits, math, etc. She didn’t notice obvious mistakes in my home, such as missing cabinet hardware, an incorrectly-sized furnace door, damaged tiles, an unseemly border between the floor tile and cabinets, etc. She also didn’t follow through on more consequential matters, such as informing the cabinet vendor that my kitchen ceiling had been raised by two inches, or ordering more granite when my kitchen island was significantly enlarged.
The worst part of my experience with Stefanie, however, was her general deceitfulness and manipulation. From the outset Stefanie deliberately created an “us against them” atmosphere with respect to the GC and his subs. She pilloried the GC for attempting to lard on kickbacks to quotes from his finish trades, which struck me as extremely hypocritical given that she was also receiving kickbacks from her own finish trades. She panicked any time I expressed a desire to compare quotes from the GC’s finish trades versus her own. Any indication of displeasure or criticism by me related to any aspect of the project provoked an overreaction by her replete with accusations that I somehow favored the GC and/or his subs over her! She couldn’t accept constructive criticism and became shrill and defensive when I challenged her. Toward the end she ranted about how underpaid she was by her other client and the GC, and insinuated that she was being underpaid by me. I feel like I grossly overpaid her in consideration for what I received!
There is a previous Revdex.com complaint against Stefanie involving client theft, and an “F” rating for Stefanie on Angie’s List from a client who claims to be have been harassed by her for having the audacity to dispute her hourly billings for time she spent telling him about her personal problems. After more than a decade in the local area, there is a reason that Stefanie R[redacted] not only doesn’t have a thriving interior design business but also no interior design business at all (she sells toilets now) -- namely that her clients would never refer her to anyone they know!
P.S. I just discovered that she stole $1,500 from me. I had written her 2 - $750 checks -- the first to pay a 50% deposit and the second to pay the balance due -- to a plumber that she had referred to me to do the plumbing trim-out for my remodeled home. Each check clearly indicated the purpose for the check, as described above, on the memo line. When I texted her to tell her she owes me $1,500, she accused me of harassing her and threatened to file a harassment complaint. I went ahead and paid the plumber because I felt bad for him. She has also stolen a significant amount of money from a different but contemporaneous client, who intends to file criminal charges!
