Went to Sterling for a personal loan. Was told no problem based on credit score and salary (130K a year) I had 12K in credit card debt which I wanted to consolidate .
Suggested Sterling cut checks directly to Credit card agencies . Get a letter of denial stating high credit card balances ! Well the reason for the loan *** !I also get a hard hit on my credit as well. Over the past two months, I have paid 9 of the 12K .
Credit is now over 700 and all the cards haven't reach credit reporting agency . So what a waste of time even after the Manager called the underwriters, they just kept saying no, no no. Sterling also missed a good opportunity to make money. Im withdrawing as well as my family members and telling friends too.
My family dates back to the Suffern Saving and Loan branches which are now under sterling. Waste of my time and a hit on my credit

I was with Astoria when they became Sterling Bank. After my wife died last year, I put the insurance money into the account. Without my permission, Sterling put me into a "private banking' account, with a 30.00 charge if the account fell below a certain amount, and with all kinds of services that I would never use. When I complained to a bank officer, I was told not to worry, if I dropped below the minimum, they would switch me over to a different account, with lower minimums. I closed the account May 10, and then got a statement later, showing the charge, because I had gone below the minimum. Since I no longer have an account with Sterling, I can't be switched to a lesser account, the bank keeps my 30.00. The whole thing was very underhanded.

Sterling National Bank stole $from my son's account, a minorWe opened the Savings Account which is linked to our accounts to teach him to save moneySterling placed it in dormant status which we were not notified of and deducted feesOur accounts linked to it have been active and they still post interest to his account then hit him with a large feeNot the way to treat a child!

I am writing in regards to possibly the most simple situation that could have been rectified by this institution however they did not see it was in the best interest of the customer to assist meI live hours away from this bank however I decided to keep my account due to all the direct deposits I have attached to the accountI was being charged continuously by another business who had stated they had already closed my accountI submitted a stop payment request to Sterling national bank in the *** *** *** *** who stated that I had filled out the form incorrectly the first timeOk, no problemI resubmitted the form, to which they then stated that I needed to select the box to stop paymentAt this point I had no additional access to a fax or scanner and you think they would honestly get the point as to what I was needing to do as the company was still continuously charging meI spoke to Phyllis at this branch who continued to play games with me on the phone in regards to transferring to a manager etcShe knew exactly what I was trying to do and I was at the mercy of them submitting the information to avoid this constant invalid charge on my accountI had to call back times in order to get this situated to which the manager never even called me back to confirm the process was completedYou would think these people would just surrender their jobs as they are CLEARLY not suited for the business of customer serviceThanks to Juana for letting me know the 5th time I called back the situation had been taken care of or I would have never known

Terrible Customer Service both Loan Officers and Underwriter were very unprofessional. It will take them a long time to get back to me. They would both go on vacation in the middle of the Mortgage loan process, and not inform me about it and no one else would follow up on the case, forcing me to wait until they got back to me. I've never experienced such unprofessionalism in my life. Apparently the loan officer I was working with covers 2 counties: the Bronx, NY and Westchester County, by himself, that right there is an impossible task to complete, a terrible business idea. Rating doesn't even deserve a star.

If I could give zero stars, I would.
Sterling national bought and took over my long time bank Astoria Federal Savings. Since then I have not been able to access my account and have a number of bills due. They have repeatedly locked my account due to computer issues. Customer service resets me, I can get in and then it tells me the system can't verify my identity, kicks me out and I start all over with customer service. Done this multiple times. At least 7 - 10. So I gave up for a few days to let them clean up their mess and now I am completely locked out, can't get a customer service agent, or log in to reset. My accounts are going to be closed as soon as I can get to a branch. They lost me. End of story.

Review: I have been banking with the above mentioned bank in September they closed the branch I frequented about five minutes from my home, a month later they closed another branch fifteen minutes away, they sent me a letter saying they are sending me to another branch in the Town of [redacted], twenty or more minutes away, Then they sent me a letter the bank was taken over. I was given a number to contact customer service, I spent hours trying to get to someone, this lasted almost a month, during this time I was not able to access my account, I got frustrated and decided to look for alternate banking. I moved most of my business to my Credit Union, I left enough money to cover one check which is money for my car insurance. I also had money coming out for my [redacted], I had already called and told them to cancel which they did not. During this time the bank somehow claimed they paid both check and continually charged me $39.00 for these checks and $7.00 daily. I also had checks which were deposited from direct deposit. Also paid them fees for $101.98 My contention is they made it impossible to get into my account, they did not have adequate people helping when they transitioned to answer questions or help with switching to new bank. I had to finally take time from work to go to the branch to get help. My other contention is they lied to me about paying all those checks and charging a fee and I have to in turn pay those checks plus late fees. I have asked them to reduce or take away the fees but they declined and threathened me with legal action.Desired Settlement: Would like this bank to refund all my money they took from my account and to take away all those fees and penalties. Thank you

Review: I recently changed health insurance plans with my company to a HDHP. With this helath plan I had to open an HSA account with their provided bank. I had a previous HSA with Sterling National Bank for my previous HDHP at a previous company. I contacted Sterling to initiate a trustee to trustee transfer of funds. I was told the trnasaction was intiated on January [redacted], 2014. On this date the funds were debited from my account. To this date, my new bank has never seen the funds. In contacting Sterling on over 5 occasions, there has been no resolution to the issue. I was not given information about what happened to the transaction nor where the funds are currently held. In two phone calls to their customer service line on February [redacted], 2014, I was placed on a 10-15 minute hold which then the line was disconnected.Desired Settlement: I want the bank to complete the transaction so that I have access to my funds to use for health services. I have been unable to schedule services for over a month due to no access to these funds. I would like continuous contact throughout the transaction so that I am informed on the timeline of events and the location of the funds.

Sincerely,

Sterling National Bank stole $175 from my son's account, a minor. We opened the Savings Account which is linked to our accounts to teach him to save money. Sterling placed it in dormant status which we were not notified of and deducted fees. Our accounts linked to it have been active and they still post interest to his account then hit him with a large fee. Not the way to treat a child!

Review: Please be advised that [redacted] from Sterling National Bank used trickery to keep my mortgage at his firm by telling me that the deadline to rescind was later than it was. He then did not honor the commitment. On Friday, he wrote in an email that the last day to rescind was Monday. Closing was Thursday, and rescind period actually ended Saturday- which I learned Monday. Instead of getting a 3.9%, 30 yr mortgage with no points at a different bank, I got a 4.275%, 30 yr mortgage... with $2,000 in points. All other terms being the same. Even at his own bank, rates went down to 4.1%, which he did not offer to me. He cost me $52,000 in interest and fees over life of the loan. He kept asking me questions on Monday and strung me along just long enough for the funds to transfer. This is the guy I referred a dozen people to over the years.

I asked for updated rates after closing, during the 3 day window to rescind. Without his deception, I could have terminated the loan with [redacted]'s bank. It would have cost me $2,000 to start over, but that's nothing compared to my savings. Oh, and the closing is where I found out that [redacted] is no longer a broker. He works solely for Sterling National Bank, and the rates he quoted me were for his employer only, not the lowest rate as the independent broker I thought him to be.Desired Settlement: I have in writing from [redacted] that available same day as closing that rates lowered to 4.125% with no points. I told [redacted] on Friday that I have an offer from [redacted] for 3.9% and on Monday, I emailed him that offer from [redacted]. I want the bank to lower my interest rate from 4.275% to 4.125% and return my points.

Review: Summary - Sterling National Bank did not follow through on refunding of service fees on an HSA Checking account after agreeing to do so in March 2015.

Time line:

2007 Aug - HSA Checking account opened with Sterling Nation Bank. Account type is free (no service charges).

2014 November - Sterling Bank begins charging $12/month fee for HSA Checking Account

2015 March- I became aware of the monthly service charge and called to dispute the charge, to remove my account funds, and close the account. After talking to a bank's representative (I did not record the person's name, but it was a male), I was told that since I had significant/sufficient funds in the account, the fee would be waived and the previous few charges would be refunded. Per our discussion, I kept the account open (did not close account and withdraw funds) on the understanding of the refund and waiver of future fees.

2015 August ** - I became aware that the monthly service fee was continuing to be charged and the previous fees had not been refunded. Called the bank to dispute the charge. Spoke to representative (Charleene P[redacted]) and was told a manager would call me back. She noted that she did see notes on the account noting a conversation from March 2015. Did not receive a call back.

2015 August ** - Since I had not received a call, I recalled the bank. Left a message. Received a call back from Frank C[redacted], Managing Director. of the [redacted]. He said he had no notes of a call from March 2015. He said he was unwilling to refund the service fees as was previously agreed to by the representative of the bank. He said he would only refund 3 months of fees ($36). I strongly disputed, based on the previous conversation with a representative (March 2015), as I never would have left the account open had it been clear that fees would continue. Although he was willing to admit that if he were in my circumstance he would be really frustrated, the Managing Director was unwilling to refund the full fees. He repeatedly said he was "unable to", but then would say that he was the one who had authority to address the situation. In truth, he simply was unwilling to refund the fees and seemed proud of that fact. When I pointed out that he was totally disingenuous with his hollow apology for inconvenience, he said he was "fine with that".

This was terrible service in multiple ways: the Bank did not keep thorough records of the conversations, did not return calls in a timely way, was unwilling to follow through on previous agreements, was totally disingenuous in their discussion, and was unwilling to be reasonable in resolving the issue. This is not what a consumer should get when paying a "service" fee.

I request that the full service fee be refunded ($108 total), and I will subsequently remove my funds, close my account, and take my business elsewhere.Desired Settlement: Refund of bank services fees on HSA checking account between Nov 2014 - Aug 2015 (approx $108 total)
