Steuart-Kret Development Co. / Steuart-Kret Homes Reviews (1)

Review: My husband recently purchased a brand new town home from your company while he is stationed in Maryland for the US Navy. He is an Air Traffic Controller for the US Navy for almost 11 years and has every intention to stay in the Navy until his retirement. He has integrity and an excellent work ethic that I would hope professionals in other industries hold valuable as well. For example, at his last duty station as a Petty Officer First Class, he held multiple Chief positions, sometimes at the same time.

There have been countless headaches throughout our experience with Steuart-Kret, including having the close date pushed back several times (even though February 14th was the original close date agreed upon in the contract, before being lined out). After an exhausting two months delay, we were finally able to close on April 10th. Originally we had requested two walk in closets, only to be told later that the items for the extended bathroom has already been ordered. At this point we both felt that we had been give false information on numerous occasions from Steuart-Kret. According to an employee, the basement had also never had significant water intrusion when my husband asked, even though there had clearly been a flood. It also wasn’t noted in any paperwork. During the final walk through, one of the things my husband noticed on almost all the corners in the house- you could see the mesh that holds the pieces of drywall together- most contractors take pride in their work, and would be embarrassed from a blatant mistake like that. It wouldn’t have been neglected until the closing inspection. He was told just to have them fix it during the one year inspection. Also the person who did the walk through with my husband was apparently fired that same day or the following morning for what we were told was fraud, stealing from your company, and lying to customers.

We moved in on April 10th, 2014 and on the very early morning, a mere 20 days later, our basement flooded with some of our belongings in it because of the incorrect installation of a sump pump. Our items have survived moving to multiple duty stations, his deployment keepsakes items were acquired through 3 deployments in 3 years… but not 20 days in a brand new home.

Although you admit that the pump was installed incorrectly which resulted in the basement flooding, you are hiding behind “consequential damage” clause, so we are just going to have to deal with the bill from the emergency plumber we had to call to help us at 3:00am and the cost of replacing our damaged items (those that can be replaced anyway).

To make matters worse, I had the “Director of Customer Service” yelling at my husband and telling him “I don’t care about your boo-hooing wife and what your stuff meant to you- it’s not my problem ” referring to me reluctantly getting emotional when I was speaking to him and answering his question “what other damages are you talking about?” I told him about a coffee table that was passed on to my husband after his grandfather passed away. This is something that has always helped him feel closer to his grandfather since he wasn’t able to spend family vacations with him due to multiple deployments. I worked customer service for ten years, and I cannot understand why someone, especially someone who holds the title of “Director of Customer Service”, would ever say that to anyone, on or off the clock. I called the office on May 2nd to ask if there was anyone else I can work with to make repairs to the house (we have already started a list) because both my husband and I are not looking forward to dealing with such an unprofessional person. This person is clearly someone who only hears enough to rebut. The office has the person who I had stated I don’t want to deal with call me to tell me that he’s the only person that can help me. At the very least, I think some customer service training is in order.

I will say there are a select few employees we have interacted with that have been helpful and a pleasure to talk to. Barbara in sales, Brian and Kevin in the field have been nothing but courteous and a pleasure to work with.

So my question is for Mr. Kret- is this how your family owned business is ran? Do you condone a representative of your company to treat your customers like this? As a client who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into your “quality” product, it would be nice to not only be heard- but listened to.Desired Settlement: I would like to work with someone other than [redacted]- he has crossed the line with his unnecessary, unapologetic, and inappropriate behavior. I'd also like to be contacted by someone higher up in corporate regarding this situation. Reimbursement for the items we are able to replace and for the emergency plumber that had to be called out to help get the flood because of the incorrect installation of the pump.
