On January 18th, 2020. My fiancée slid into one of our trees leaving for work (She is an authorized driver on the policy), I reported the accident the following Monday (January 20th) and started a collision claim. I was advised to take my vehicle (2009 Ram 1500) to one of State Farm’s repair facilities (Three were available, one I had never heard of, and another was a Chevrolet dealership, so I opted for the third). I received the estimate and was told they could start right away and it would take roughly three weeks, State Farm will have the estimate automatically because it was put in the system at the body shop.
I called my State Farm agent and told them they could send the claim to myself (I was going to do the repairs myself) or the lien holder whichever is easiest, it would be going to the same place regardless, to the lien holder. I was told that they haven’t received an estimate and may want to change the estimate from their shop. I then called State Farm’s claim service and talked to a Tammy and told her the same thing, I was told they would release the payment for the amount on the estimate received.
I received the payment for the estimate done at their shop, put it in my savings account (I don’t leave large sums of money in a checking account). The next day another estimate was done (unknown to me) and it was adjusted for about 40% lower than the original, that payment was sent and the claim was closed. (Again, unknown to me). They then reversed the original estimate paid out, causing an insufficient funds fee.
I called my agent and was told that he doesn’t handle claims, they go elsewhere when filed. I asked him to cancel all of my policies with State Farm as this was ridiculous.
I have never seen or heard of a practice like this. If I had my vehicle repaired at the body shop State Farm told me to take it to, I’d be left owing the shop a couple thousand dollars. Thankfully I’m not in that boat. I have consulted with an attorney to see if filing a lawsuit is feasable.
Thank you for this information. The insured called us about the accident. He indicated he wanted to do the repairs himself. He was informed that State Farm had to have an estimate from a qualified repair shop. Once this was accomplished for State Farm the agent is really not involved unless there is a question from the insured. The next I heard was this last Monday, 3-2-2020. He said he want to cancel his policy due to the problems he had experienced with the claims department. We took care of the cancellation. This complaint I am not able to address because I have no facts as to the interaction between the insured and claims. When I received this complaint, I contacted claims. I forwarded the remarks to them. They were surprised that a complaint was addressed to the agent. Generally, all complaints go to the company claims department. They informed me that the complaint will be reviewed. The company will try to make contact with the claimant. I understand that they have already reached out to him and left a message. He is welcome to contact us to help him make contact with claims.
State Farm claims did contact me and admitted fault, apologized, said this should have not have happened and the original estimate was correct, and they issued a payment for the original estimate as well as reimbursement for insufficient funds fees incurred from over drafting my checking account.
