Stoney Mountain Reviews (13)

I 2017, hired Stoney Mountain Jeep to complete, along with several other componets) engine and transmission rebuild on my 1946 Willys Jeep. Since that time, the vehicle has experienced so many mechanical problems that It has been incapable of being driven. The vehicle has experienced multiple problems to include serious drivability issues such as, cooling and oil leaks, engine overheating and stalling. At this time I have experienced so many issues with the engine, I have not even been able to evaluate the transmission or other mechanical components. I have returned the Jeep three (3) times to Stoney Mountain Jeep for repair, however it is returned and yet another problem is identified. The owner of Stoney Mountain, jack Westwood, has been incredulious to the issue and has failed to take responsibility. The vehicle is incapable of being driven in its current condition and sits lifleless in my garage. I have requested a refund in the amount of $3119.29 however this refund has been refused.

I want to begin by stating that we do not refund charges for work preformed, we will repair any thing that may need attention but there're no refunds.First of all we did [redacted] a big favor by picking up his vehicle and returning it after repairs as our warranty does not include towing or pickup and that was a 46 mile round trip and we made it twice because he told us the lot would be opened for us to pickup his vehicle and there was no one around. Then he is talikg about tings that were never in question. The Head Gasket was never leaking. He first complained about the rear seal leaking and we removerd the oil pan, timing case cover and dropped the crank and installed another new rear main seal, front crank seal, timing case cover gasket, and a new pan gasketjust ae e told him we would.I have in hand seven written affadvits from other customers that were in the shop while this work was being done. I also have three peoples that were actually working on the vehicle including myself that can testify that [redacted] does not know what he is talking about and never has.For the water in the radiator this ---- was informed when he picked up his vehicle that we never put anything but water in the radiator on a new engine because if there is any type of water leak it does not do as much damage as antifreeze does to a new engine. [redacted] was told to drive the vehicle for a few days and put about 250 miles on it and then drain the water and replace it with what ever coolant he wanted, ( HE WAS TOLD A FEW DAYS NOT SIX MONTHS LATER. He took his vehicle to a facility that used a power back flush machine on the motor and radiator that puts 60 pounds of pressure on gaskets and engine and radiator that was designed to hold six pounds of pressure in the system. He is very luck that it dod not blow every gasket and the radiator apart. He called me and told me he found some oil behind the front pulley about 3 or 4 weeks after we replaced the seals.I told him to drive it for a few miles and see if the new seal would seat to the crankshaft and if not bring it back and I would check it. Then he started calling me a liar and critizing our shop and our employees and I don't have to listen to that from anyone especially from some one that knows nothing about a vehicle so I hung up on his.I immediately sent him an email telling him the same identical thing that I told him on the phone, this is over 6 weeks ago and we never heard another word from him about any oil leak until instead of being a man and bringing it back like we advised he has to run his mouth to the Revdex.com about it. He has been trying to sell this vehicle for the past year, and told me he had several people interested but apparently no sale. We not only found him another engine block because his was froze up, and rebuild the engine, carbuerator, new wiring, repaired the top and replaced a lot of new parts on the top, put in a new clutch and new carpeting and a lot more, but [redacted] of course did not want to do a complete job on his vehicle when it was done so after he picked it up there were several things that he complained about that we have never touched on the vehicle or was not contracted to do but we did repair them all at no charge to him.As far as the gas tank leaking this was never in any agreement to take the gas tank down and flush it but when he started haveing trouble with a lot of dirt from the tank getting into the carbuerator that we had just rebuilt we did flush out his gas tank as a favor to him and to prevent any further damage to the new rebuilt carbuerator. This was 6 months ago and when the vehicle was in here for the seal replacment there was no leak in the gas tank and this was 6 months ago that the tank was flushed out and flushing a tank never puts holes in it.I will be glad to check the front seal again and replace it if it is leaking but nothing further on his vehicle and his warranty has expired. If [redacted] want to take us to small claims court that is his choice but our witnesses is going to make him look awful foolish.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

I do not agree with what Stoney is saying if he will fix it I am OK with that.

In response to Stoney Mountain’s message, he said he would

fix it and I will give him a chance to do so. But his response is a bit concerning

to me as it is not fact based, and therein lies my problem with Stoney. In the

response he states I notified Jan 29th of the leak and he emailed back

in an attempt to schedule, that’s not correct. I emailed Jan 22nd

and he responded Jan 23rd stating the oil drip is normal and it will

eventually stop. On Jan 25th and 29th I forwarded

responses to me from renowned mechanics for this vehicle saying they do not

leak unless seals are improperly installed, and if it is leaking it will

continue to leak. Stoney replied, everyone has their own opinions. So this is

why I contacted Revdex.com. (If he had told me he would fix it I would not have contacted

Revdex.com). His initial response was “it is normal for these engines to leak until

the seal seats.” I did not find a single mechanic who shared this belief. I

have the emails and names of shops. He says it will leak until it seats but

also he will fix it.  I am again ignorant;

how do you fix something that is normal and not a problem? There are other

issues I am not going to muddy the waters with, including the generous “$850. value

gift repair” but will expand later when/if needed. As to the overdrive, well it

went down exactly as did the oil drip. He said “it works, but it is not

something you would notice.” I researched and everyone told me no; the overdrive

is like another gear and I would notice. After I forwarded this to Stoney he

did agree to fix it and did replace a cable. As to the customer ignorance accusation,

guilty!  I ask the right questions but

get answers like,” it should leak”, and “overdrive works you just can’t tell.  I have emails to back up every claim I am

making. He goes so far to say he has not heard back from me after he scheduled

me for Feb. 5th; this is an outright attempt to deceive. We had an

emailing Jan 30 response Feb 1st where he said he might could pick

it up from my storage since I am out of state. However, storage told me it

would be in violation of my user agreement to give him the pass code in, so I

was working on solution. “Some people want to complain” no, some people want to

deceive.

After the work performed, the 1st weekend I took

it to a show. I had to push it on the trailer as it had a gas leak and would

not start. Got it back and took it to the [redacted] and it died on the

way back to storage 8 mile round trip had to hitch hike for truck and trailer. The

Jeepster does not have 100 miles on it, there were other reasons it was returned.

He had it for all of Nov. and Dec.

during which time he saw the leak but did nothing to fix it. The alternator belt

too is shredding because the belt is too fat for the pulley, he says it will be

OK. When I open the hood and see belt shreds and oil on wheel wells and am told

it is normal, I think, don’t piss on my boots and tell me it’s raining. For

this reason I contacted Revdex.com. I realized Stoney is a member, and the last person

to “complain” was said to be the one who would not cooperate to work toward a

solution just as I am being accused of.  I would be glad to forward emails to the contrary.

Regards,

We scheduled [redacted] in to make the repairs he was talking about and even offered to pickup the vehicle from his storage lot as he ask us to and he was to call me back and make arrangments for us to get into the storage but that never has happened.

If we don't have the vehicle we can handle his complaint. We have every intention of checking the oil leak he talked about and installing a narrrower belt on the alternator but without the vehicle none of this can be done.

If he makes arrangment to get the vehicle to us these repairs will be done as we told him and you.

Stoney Mountain LLC

[redacted] notified us on Jan 29, 2014 that he had an oil leak and desired us to repair it and we sent him an email back scheduling him in on Feb 5, 2914 to check it out and make repairs but he did not respond to the email to confirm his appointment.

He also mention previous problems and that...

was a problem we never even worked on prior to the problem it was a gas tank full of rust causing the problem and we repaired this for him free of charge ( $850.00 value) so it did  not damage the engine we had replaced.

He also mentioned a problem with the overdrive and we repaired that when it was in  the first time and never touched it after, this was just a case of customer ignorance in not knowing how to operate the vehicle they were driving and after we showed him how to operate it he said it work fine and I have his email to that fact.

Again we stand behind everything we do and even though the oil drip wll stop as soon as the new seal seats to the crank we have told [redacted] to bring it back and we would repair it. To date we have not heard back from him reference his appointment.

Thanks for lets us know about the complaint but it appears some people want to complain instead of returning and have it looked at .

I have read a couple reviews on this company and it is hard for me to even believe the guy that posted about the Bronco. I have had these people do 11 vehicles for mew since 2003 and they have done nothing but turn out fabolous pieces of work, in fact 3 of these vehicles were sold a Barrett Jackson for quite a lot of money.

I am a collector and dealer in off road and muscle cars and these guy know their business. I take the vehicle to them and tell them what I expect when I pick it up and believe me there has never been one out of the 11 that was anything different than I requested. I presently have purchased two more vehicles and will be taking them to to do their magic.

For you people looking to have their vehicle done I would look no where else.

Regards,

This is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. They did over 15k of damage to my vehicle. Since I got it back I have recieved contact from multiple other people that have used this company and had a similar experience to mine

Hi. My name is Roy Hamilton from Santa Fe New Mexico and I just have to share this with others. About 6 or 7 months ago we took our two Jeeps, mine and my son's, to Phoenix to have restored as they had been setting for 5 or 6 years not running so one Saturday Morning in February we loaded them up and drove them to Phoenix to a company called Stoney Mountain. We had heard about this company from a friend that had his jeep done there about five years ago. We told them what we want and we were told a price for both jeeps which seemed like a fair price being the condition of both of them. They told us 6 to 8 months for completion so we ask them to send us pictures via email which they did about twice a month. On July 8th they called and said our Jeeps were ready for pickup. On July 17, 2016 we left Santa Fe at 4:30 AM so we would arrive in Phoenix before they closed to get our Jeeps. When we arrived at Stoney Mountain he had our Jeeps parked side by side on the driveway and we were just shocked, we looked at each other and all we could say was WOW, they were great. They made us drive them around the neighborhood before they would help us load them to make sure w were happy and again all I can say is WOW, what a fabulous job. They helps us load both Jeeps and secure them to our trailers and when we went to pay them off there was no hidden charges or addition's it was exactly what we were told up front. What great people to deal with. You can bet I will tell everyone I know with a Jeep that it is well worth the drive to Phoenix to Stoney Mountain to have them done.

I took my 1970 bronco to this company. It was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. I paid them to fully restore it and received anything but. They told me at least three times that everything was working great and it was done. The first time I went to pick it up smoke rolled out of it and it broke down in a shopping center. They added a new a/c unit which has never worked since I got it back from them. Finally I paid them off a large amount to release it and I towed it home. They said they replaced parts that were never replaced. Since I have got the Bronco I have paid over $10,000 to get it functioning right. Please ask them for customers they have done fully restorations for before you use them. Don't make the mistake I did.

Review: Stoney rebuilt my Willys Jeepster. There has been several issues however he had been willing to make them right until now. The rebuilt engine has a good oil leak and he is telling me that this is normal and the seal will eventually seat and stop.

I have checked with 3 independent rebuilders none of which think the problem will just go away. Stoney points to his 50 year experience on these however previously he told me the overdrive was working but it would not be something

that would be noticeable. I checked with one of the independent rebuilders, Jeepster [redacted] who told me it is like another gear and I would be able to tell if it was working. Confronted with this info. Stoney then fixed it. (I saved all email correspondence). This is the exact attempt to mislead and deceive as is being used now, I forwarded him emails from the other rebuilders but no answer.Desired Settlement: Fix the oil leak, or return a portion of the money to have it transported to another shop with [redacted] knowledge and fixed correctly.

(Jeepster [redacted] is in Palanka Florida, however there is another reputable [redacted] mechanic in California)

I took in my old 1943 MB Jeep that had been sitting in a barn in Cochise County for 20 years and had not been ran. They got the engine freed up and refurbished all the brakes and checked the Jeep out completely and I had them put new tires on it and I drive my Jeep every day and I can tell you that I enjoy every minute of it thanks to the guys at Stoney Mountain Jeep., If I every have another old vehicle that needs to be repaired I will never take it anywhere else.
