New cement driveway installed is 4 years old. Multiple cracks.Disintegration from rock salt. contractors say inadequate grade of concrete was used. New concrete driveway installed 4 years ago has not held up. Within months after installation there were multiple and deep cracks. This past year, with the town spreading rock salt left a portion of our driveway with disintegrated concrete. What concerns us is several contractors have told us the concrete used is sidewalk or basement concrete. We have looked at many other concrete driveways much older than ours and they are in good shape compared to our driveway. I requested that the thickness of the concrete be 4 inches in front of the garage up to the street and 6 inches to the right of that the full length of the driveway to support our motorhome. The major crack looks like it is where the 4 and 6 inch concrete meet. The newest portion of the driveway to the right of the existing driveway was placed over an existing septic system which had been abandoned in place under the ground! This contractor demolished the system and added fill which was compacted to the contractors standard. I watched the contractor compress the old system and add fill but I don't know if the compaction was enough as I am not knowledgeable enough to make an assumption.Desired SettlementI would like to have a refund of the amount we paid the contractor and we will hire a specialized contractor to repair or replace the portions of the driveway that have either cracked from possible poor compaction, poor mix of concrete and areas of the concrete that have spalled due to rock salt being sent into the driveway by the town.Business Response I have talked with [redacted]. He acknowledges that he is no expert on concrete installation, but though research he has agreed that rock salt will damage a concrete surface. With the most severe winter in the last 80 years and the continual salt applications on the roads. The end of his driveway was damaged. He has taken my advice to replace the end with asphalt instead. The concrete is not an inferior product. When the driveway was installed 4 years ago, I didn't realize that the town of [redacted] was on a straight salt program for there roads. We have offered to remove the apron free of charge and he will hire someone to put down the asphalt apron.I think this matter is resolved.Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)Our resolution with Strum Construction Services is in the making. He has agreed at no cost to us to dig up and remove the portion of the driveway that is disintegrated at the end of this month of May. We would appreciate Revdex.com keeping this case open until the work is done. then we will have to pay for another contractor to put down the asphalt and repair the cracks.
