Went into Central Ohio Dental Associates (CODA) for a new upper denture. I gave my insurance information to CODA and it was verified. I was told by CODA it would cover the denture. At this time there was no discussion between me and Central Ohio Dental Associates for any other payment that was needed. I knew my insurance covered up to $1,200 for dentures.
After going through the fitting process, I went in on 4-1-13 for another fitting and was told by the dentist to pick up my denture on 4-5-13. When I arrived at their office on 4-5-13 to pick up my denture, I was told that the denture (upper only) was going to cost me an additional $715.00 for my denture... a total of $1,915.00. (for just an upper denture only) I informed her that no one had ever told me that the denture was going to cost more than what my insurance allowed, in fact they never discussed the cost of the denture, only that my insurance covered it. Due to the poor condition of my old denture it was crucial that I get this new denture asap. I was told, no payment...no denture.
CODA refused to discuss or negotiate at this point. I contacted my insurance company, [redacted] and they stated that this office has overcharged for an upper denture by an outrageous amount and I should have been told the cost of the denture up front and been offered to sign an agreement for payment. I was never told the cost, nor was any payment agreement discussed with me prior to the day I went to pick up the new denture. Had I known the cost, I could have shopped around for a better price that my insurance would have covered in full... which was easy to find. My own insurance company gave me 5 other dentist to go to, and the cost will be 100% covered by my insurance. At this time I have stopped the insurance payment on the denture and CODA has threatened to put me into collections. I was told this was a common tactic by some offices to scam money out of unsuspecting patients like me.
