I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Summit Roofing installed the roof on our new home less than three years ago. We have had problems with damp drywall and peeling paint in the upstairs ceiling since we moved in, and have had a number of contractors out over the years to fix damage and look for the problem. When we recently discovered the source of the leak in the roof, Summit Roofing refused to cover the damage or even pay to fix the leak itself, explaining that it was no longer covered by the one-year warranty.

Summit Roofing installed a whole new roof on my house in A[redacted], Va. The job was very well done, all the employees working on my house were so responsive to my requests and very accommodating, not to mention courteous. Frankly, I did not expect that kind of service, I even had them re-do a couple of areas of the roof, they did it with no questions asked and no issues. I was a little bit inquisitive and fearful in the beginning being it is a major roof job of roughly 5000 square feet, but the company has met and exceeded my expectations. I would definitely use them again and recommend them highly

Review: Summit Roofing preformed the work that was not authorized (was not on the signed by me proposal). In particular, Summit Roofing has replaced existing gutter screens with its own gutter screens (different type than we had) without our permission.

During the storm in the summer of 2012 our roof and gutters were damaged by a fallen tree. I contacted Summit Roofing and requested a written proposal to fix the roof and gutters. On the initial proposal the replacement of the screens was specified. Since we wanted to have exactly the same gutter screens as we have over the rest of the gutters, I talked to [redacted] (President of Summit Roofing), and indicated that we do not want their screens. He took the screens off of the proposal, and submitted a revised proposal of work, where replacements of the screens was not specified. I signed the revised proposal, according to which the work should have been done, and faxed it to Summit Roofing on September 14, 2012. The work was done in different days and it took Summit Roofing 82 days to complete the work. During the heavy rain on March 12 I have noticed that water overflows the gutters on the side of the house where Summit Roofing did the work. I contacted Summit Roofing and they sent someone to see what the problem was. It turned out that Summit Roofing not only installed different type of gutter screens on the damaged area of the gutters, they ripped out gutter screens on the whole back side of the house and put their screens, which now resulted in the downspouts clogged by debris. At the time I did not realize that Summit Roofing took the liberty and replaced the gutter screens on the whole back side of the roof on our house without our authorization.. I called the company that installed original gutter screens (different type), and after inspecting the gutters on the back side of our house, they confirmed the gutter screens were different than what we had before.

I called Summit Roofing on Monday, March 25, 2013, and requested to speak to their president [redacted]. When [redacted] called me on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, I explained the situation, and since the different gutter screens were put on our gutters without our permission by Summit Roofing, I requested that Summit Roofing would remove their gutter screens, that were installed by their mistake without our permission, and pay for the installation of the new gutter screens (the type we have throughout the house). It was clearly mistake of Summit Roofing workers and I felt it would be fair to ask for this. In response to my request [redacted] very rudely, using foul language (he was on a speaker and my wife and kids heard it) refused to accommodate my request and hung up the phone. He also accused me of not paying my bill upon Summit Roofing completing their job, which is not true.

I have all written documents (both initial and revised proposals, email correspondence with Summit Roofing employees) supporting my claim.Desired Settlement: To settle this complaint I would like thee Summit Roofing to remove the screens they installed without our permission, and pay for the installation of the new gutter screens that they ripped out on the whole length of the back side of the house. In addition I would like that [redacted] personally apologizes to me for being rude on the phone and using bad language in conversation with me, and accusing me of not paying my bills on time.

Response:

[redacted] originally contacted our office and requested an estimate on 7-11-13. We sent a tech right over and started an estimate. [redacted] had extensive roof, siding, soffit, fascia, & gutter damage due to a tree that had fallen on his house during a storm. I personally dealt with [redacted] on his insurance estimate. I emailed him a written proposal covering all the work to be done on 9-12-12. [redacted] e-mailed me his acceptance on 9-13-12. Over the next few weeks we scheduled and completed each pahse of the repairs. Several different crews were involved in the roof, siding, soffit & fascia work. We went back and forth thru a few e-mails with [redacted] who noted some things he did not like or wanted to have us look at. Each time we sent our men back out including with any pictures [redacted] may have sent us showing items he wanted addressed. We did every single thing he asked us to do including replacing some gutters and screens that were damaged that was NOT in the original scope of work. [redacted]s requests for the gutter is highlighted in the attached e-mails. Please note, we did this at his request and DID NOT CHARGE HIM A DIME FOR IT. Additionally we even went so far as to put sample pieces of siding up so [redacted] could have his homeowners association look at it and approve the color match. We put every effort we could into getting him what he wanted.

Once the work was complete we sent [redacted] his invoice (invoice # [redacted] dated 11-7-2012). On this invoice we did not charge him any thing for any of the extra work we had done that was not in the scope of work. We replaced several extra sections of siding, also did extra soffit & fascia work as well all at NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER. Just a simple courtesy to try to make him happy. On Nov 9th we recieved an e-mail from [redacted] with some pictures of a few issues he did not like. I immediatly printed the pictures and gave them to one of our techs and sent them back to do what [redacted] wanted done. This request was completed iimmediatly. We did not hear a word from [redacted] him for nearly 3 months. no call, no fax, no e-mail, no payment.... nothing??? On jan 22, 2013 I had our customer service manager [redacted] who is also my niece e-mail him to find out why his bill was not paid?? [redacted]s responce was that we had not finished the work to his satisfaction and he was wondering when we would return?? Had he said anything to us during that time we surely would have come right back out. No matter on 1-29-13 we had our men go back once again and take care of the items [redacted] wanted done.

On Jan 31st we recieved and e-mail from [redacted] which stated in part and I quote " Since it took almost 3 months for Summit Roofing to correct the unfinished work, I was wondering if the owner would consider giving us a substantial discount on our invoice? The Company has the unblemished reputation, and excellent A+ rating by the Revdex.com witout any negative feednback or complaints, and I am confident that is not the way Summit Roofing usually treats its clients." end quote......... as reasonable request??? or an attempt to extract a discount under threat of writing bad feedback???? I decided that we would once again make and attemp to accomodate a customer who after dealing with him for nearly 5 months, waiting to be paid for nearly 3 months, and having hoop after hoop put up for us to jump thru might have a valid point. Nothing is perfect and surely there had been some mix up in communication and scheduling of the work. I agreed to give him $300 off his invoice. We sent him an updated invoice and he paid us by credit card $2,425.53 on Feburary 28, 2013, 5 & 1/2 months after we had started the work and 4 full months since we had sent the original invoice.

Please bear in mind that at this point we have given [redacted] FREE GUTTERS, FREE GUTTER SCREENS, AND A 10% + DISCOUNT ON THE WORK PERFORMED.

On 3-12-13 [redacted] e-mailed our office and reported his new gutter overflowing. We had a service man there the same day to check it out. My service tech who went by reported that the downspout (which was the original & not replaced during any of the work we had done) was completly clogged. He made a quick list of what was needed and we sent him back the very next day on 3013-13. At this time he took the downspout loose from the gutter took the elbow off and removed the clog which was leaf & tree debris including some of the helicopter debris. He put the debris he removed in a box and put it on the customers porch. We DID NOT CHARGE THE CUSTOMER A DIME FOR THIS EVEN THO IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THE WORK WE HAD DONE.

A week or so later [redacted] called our office and demanded we come out and remove the screens we had installed (FREE) AND DEMANDED THAT WE PAY FOR SOMEONE TPO PUT IN NEW SCREENS?????. I spoke to [redacted] and tried to explain to him that the screens that we installed were Englert gutter screens and are in fact far superior to the ones he has on the rest of his house. I tried to explain to him that the screens had noting to do with the clogged gutter that in fact it was his old screens that had allowed that debris to enter the downspout. He would not believe anything I told him. He insisted we remove the screens AND pay for new ones which I found a completly unacceptable request. I offered to send a man back and remove the screens (the screens that we had installed for him free) but I would NOT pay him to have someone put different screens in. I told him I would go no further and I won't.

Please bear in mind that at this point we have given [redacted] FREE GUTTERS, FREE GUTTER SCREENS, A 10% + DISCOUNT ON THE WORK PERFORMED, & NOW HE WANTS US TO PAY HIM TO HAVE SOMEONE ELSE INSTALL DIFFERENT GUTTERS SCREENS???? HE HASN'T PAID A DIME TO US FOR GUTTER OR SCREENS !!!!

At my refusal to pay him [redacted] said if I did not do what he demanded he would leave bad feedback on my company where ever he could including this Revdex.com site. Again bear in mind that [redacted] has had the work done, didn't pay for it for months, recieved 10+% discount on the work, recieved free gutters. and free gutter screens, recieved a free service call to remove a clog from his older downspout, and he is gonn leave bad feedback on me because we won't give him money?? It is clear to me at this point that [redacted] has taken advantage of us. He is a customer that any business should run from. We did everything we could to get him what he wanted, when he wanted it, including giving him free stuff and discounts but that was not enough. Now when we say NO to him he threatens us with leaving feedback with the Revdex.com that is damaging and threatnig to my business unless we pay him to have someone do work we have already done for him for free??

I responded to [redacted] when we spoke on the phone and I want to strongly reiterate it again. If [redacted] makes any statements about me or my company in a public forum anywhere I will immediatly have my attorney file suit against him for damages and slander. This is not what I choose but the position [redacted] has put me in. If [redacted] has plenty of time and money I will be more than happy to meet him in a courtroom and let a judge decide who is right and who is wrong. I have discussed this with my attorney and he has been copied on this e-mail. He understands my position and will agressively defend it. Again not what I would choose and one I hope [redacted] does not choose either but I do not bluff on matter ike this. I will not allow [redacted] or anyone else to slander or threaten the reputaion of my business or it's hard working employees that we have worked so hard to earn over the last 35 years.

My last & only offer that I will make is the same, we will be happy to remove the gutter screens we installed free for [redacted]. We will NOT pay anyone to install new ones for him . Thank You, [redacted] President Summit Roofing Contracots Inc.

Review: [redacted]

Hello,

I am rejecting this response because: Summit Roofing refused to remove the gutter screens they installed without my permission, and pay for the installation of the screens I had before.

Review: I hired the Summit Roofing to inspect my bay window referred by someone else who contracted with the builder. My bay window started leaking when it rained heavily about a year after the builder's warranty expired. Two guys came out from the Summit Roofing and they recommended to seal the bricks. They claimed they were great at sealing the bricks even though they specialized on roofing, and sealant should last about five years. So I made appointment in April of 2013. I paid $550 to seal bricks on the front of my townhouse where there is a big bay window. But within five months, rain started leaking in to the house again. I called and the [redacted]e guy who sealed my brick and a supervisor came out to inspect the bricks. They claimed that it wasn't their workmanship. They claimed it may be the window that was above the bay window causing the water to leak in. They promised to come back out to put a hole in the ceiling to inspect in detail. I told them, if it is the brick problem, I wanted them to re-apply the sealant. I made about 15 calls at different times. Sometimes, I would get lucky to talk to some one in person, but sometimes, I would leave voice message to the supervisor and to the person who set up my appointment, but they kept saying they will give me a call back or come back out, but haven't seen them. This phone tagging lasted from October, 2013 thru December, 2013. They failed to do what they promised to do.Desired Settlement: I would like either to get the refund or the Summit Roofing would come back out to seal my bricks again.
