Surgical Center of Long Beach Reviews (%countItem)

I was scheduled to have injections by my physician at this facility. They requested an upfront payment of $323. My insurance is through the Union and I was told that I was not to pay upfront, I was to wait until after I received an Explanation of Benefits. I was told by a male at this facility that I had to pay at least $100 upfront of I could not receive the injections that were already approved by my insurance company. I explained how my insurance works and that he is to submit the claim to them and then I would receive a bill, He told me that I was going to receive an Explanation of benefits anyways and to just pay it. I again explained that my insurance did not work like that and was not to pay upfront. He told me that my insurance had no control over this. I paid the $100 he requested and they ended up putting that payment on another patient's account. This facility refuses to submit claims for reimbursement before making the patient pay for services.

Desired Outcome

Refund Offices are to adhere to the contract with an insurance company. This office does not.

Surgical Center of Long Beach Response • Apr 02, 2020

We apologize that our patient feels that we have treated her any different. It is our Center policy, (of which we disclosed with the patient's insurance prior to contracting), that we collect co pays, deductibles, or/and co insurances upfront based on insurance benefits quoted directly from insurance carrier on ALL patients with a financial responsibility. Patients are called days prior to appointment and also upon check-in are provided with a financial estimator on what their estimated financial responsibility would be. (We like to be transparent, rather than surprising anyone with an unexpected bill). We have a sign posted as well advising patients that copays, coinsurances, etc... must be paid prior to services being rendered. We understand that rising medical costs can make health care seem unaffordable for some people. SCLB is committed to helping our patients ease this burden by offering payment plans for these POS visits. Please contact our office should you have any further questions

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I called my insurance from the office and my carrier was not aware of anything going on because they had not received any information on it. Payment was not discussed with My insurance as they told me not to pay without my claim being reviewed first. My financial responsibility to this establishment was $79.50, they forced me to pay $100 but tried to collect $323. I'm still waiting for my change! Feel free to call the union in which my health plan is through. You guys never called my insurance about this.

We're sorry you feel that you insurance was not contacted at all. As a matter a fact, carrier was contacted numerous times, thus, how we obtain pre-authorization for procedure at SCLB. We received faxes and benefits thru the insurance carrier outlining the breakdown patient responsibilities. Financial estimator outlined remaining deductible, coinsurance/copay quoted per insurance benefits quoted at the time of verification. On 03-31-2020 we receive and EOB from insurance outlining the final claim adjustment. (Deductible was not applied to our claim why estimate was less than initially quoted). EOB showed a patient responsibility of $79.50, immediately our billing team initiated a refund request thru our Accounts Payable department. On 04/16/2020 Accounts Payable department processed a refund and a check was mailed to patient for $20.50. Patient can call our Billing Dept. to obtain further check information (check #, etc...). We rely on quoted benefits from insurance carriers to being able to provide accurate financial benefits. Its unfortunate that they misinform patients about our overall policy and procedures regarding collecting copays, coinsurance, deductible upfront.
