Synergy Fitness (Astoria) Reviews (18)

Review: I am a resident of Astoria, NY, who held a gym membership at [redacted] (billed as [redacted] Clubs on my bank statements) from months - . Their business went under over a year ago, which I discovered when it no longer was open. I received no notice of their closing, and stopped payments to their business after they closed. The last payment I made was 2/*/2015. I have started to receive calls from a collection agency (Performance Portfolio Management) on behalf of another business, Synergy fitness club, who on review of my bank statements, continued to collect direct deposits from my account through 6/*/2015. I never signed a contract with them, was never informed of a change in my contract, and have never entered their establishment. On 6/2015, my debit card was found to have unusual activity on it and [redacted] changed my debit card number. From there on out, payments to Synergy were stopped. Now they have reported me as delinquent in payments to their business. I have never had any dealings with their business, have no history of ever going to their gym, have never checked in, have never signed a contract with them, and have no interest in ever going there. For them to now claim that I owe them money is absolutely absurd, especially with no notice, no calls, and only a surprise letter in the mail from a collection's agency. On brief review of their [redacted] page ([redacted]), I am not the only customer this has happened to.Desired Settlement: I want acknowledgement from the business that I do not owe them any more money than the money that was wrongfully paid to them while they collected direct withdraws from my bank account, a cessation of any further contact from the business, and correction to my credit report if this has had any impact on it. I would like confirmation that all of these matters have been addressed.

Review: I sent synergy fitness a certified letter as required to cancell my membership over 2 years ago. I have not heard from them since and now they have a debt collector calling me in order to collect money I do not owe them. They never once tried to contact me themselves to resolve the issue and ithe is quite stressful to have debt collectors harassing you at all hours or the day and night. I wish to resolve this issue as I followed the proper procedure to cancel but they now claim they never received my letter and are looking for a receipt from 2 years ago!! I have moved house and no longer have it, if I had been using this service over the past two years then I would pay but I haven't been and I think that they are scamming me out of alot of money here. I feel like a victim of a big corporation.Desired Settlement: I wish for them to cancel my membership once and for all and for these charges that they claim I owe to be dropped

Review: The first I heard of this business was when a charge by them showed up on my bank statement. I successfully disputed the charge, and updated my [redacted] review to reflect this occurrence as there were several other consumers with similar issues.

The manager then responded to my review with a public threat that he would take me to collections. This constitutes public harassment.

I called my bank about this and my bank's representative said that I would not have won my dispute without a meticulous investigation and that the claim resolution letter would be all I would need to prove this. I also asked if they had had any further attempts from this business to take money out of my account and they said yes, though they denied the charges.

Again, I had no prior contact whatsoever with this business before their charges showed up on my card.Desired Settlement: I would like the public threat on my [redacted] review removed, no further attempts by this business to take money out of my account, and an assurance that they will make no illegal attempts to use a collections agency, nor ever contact me again.

Response:

The gym to which this individual belonged to, [redacted], merged with Synergy Fitness. As a result, all members were transferred. A notice was sent by [redacted] to all members. We recommend that the member cancel his contract properly so membership fees no longer continue to accrue. Thank you and take care.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

The business response is an outright lie. There was never any notification whatsoever from the previous gym. [redacted] conducted an investigation based on my original complaint, found Synergy at fault, communicated with their bank, and had the money returned to me. The only communication I ever received from Synergy other than this communication with Revdex.com was the response to my [redacted] review. I have spoken to other people who have been harassed by this business and who told me that they were only left alone when they threatened legal action.

In order for the Revdex.com to appropriately process your response, you MUST answer the question above.

Review: They failed to update my billing information and caused confusion which resulted in late payments and penalties that accumulated on my credit card account.

They are requiring me to send a certified letter to cancel my membership even though

I'm not in a contract.

They are also forcing me to remain a member until my certified mail arrives in 30 days.Desired Settlement: I believe Synergy Fitness should cancel my membership immediately. they should also paid for the certified mail and remove any charges made after my cancellation.

Sincerely,

Review: I recently started getting hounded by a debt collector about an outstanding balance of over $1,000.00 with synergy fitness. I had a membership over a year ago and as gym memberships go didn't go for a while. I assumed when my bank card changed that if I wanted to start up again I would have to pay a late. My monthly membership was around $20.00.

I was never contacted by synergy about this. No letters, no calls, zero communication about a discrepancy in their policy. Now I have a "bill" with them of over 1,000.00. Some hidden clause in their contract is unlawful and must be reported. This has happened to other members from readin reviews online. This seems to be happening to more and more people.Desired Settlement: To remove charges, end all Calls from the debt collector and to end all communication with Synergy.

Review: [redacted]! Shut them down!

Wow so I thought I was the only one who experienced this today. There are tons of people having the same fraudulent and unethic issues with this location! I too got a call from collections. I was a member in 2011. I cancelled in person 3x and provided a letter from my doctor stating a medical reason for the cancellation. They continued for one year to charged me each month. Last attempt I threaten to sue them and they apologized and promised to leave me alone. 3 and half years later I get call from collections. I come here to yelp to read the reviews, and I see others with similar stories. So stealing money is their business. I'm here to share my story and I hope others who are going thru the same thing will contact me. Let's have a class action law suit. I already have an attorney. This bogus business needs to be shut down for good!Desired Settlement: I do not owe them money. Please clear billing and credit report.

Review: I went in person to Synergy Fitness Astoria on 1/**/2016 and spoke to Bernice M[redacted], a membership consultant.

I informed her that I would like to cancel my membership and she refused to do so in person, stating that I would need to mail a form via certified mail to the same address I was at.

I told her this was insane and that I wanted to cancel my membership which I was obligated to due with my month to month membership (I was already a member for over two years).

She refused and I informed her that I would be filing a complaint with my credit card provider.Desired Settlement: Cancel my membership as of 1/**/2016, if there is a one statement delay so be it but cancel the membership.

Review: Please forgive me for any grammatical errors/ignorance, I am a senior in college and I attend college in PA but permanently live at home in NYC. Since December 2013, I have been signed up with my local branch of Synergy gym (reviews of this gym sharing stories similar to mine can be found here [redacted]) and a contract was signed for my monthly membership dues ($41.80 at the time), which I paid for with a debit card on file. I was 19 years old and unfamiliar with what contracts could entail as well as this establishment's negative reviews. I also don't remember them ever explaining any of the terms like providing 30 days written notice for cancellation (only know from recently contacting them about my situation/[redacted] reviews discussing their dishonest business tactics) and the fact that they can apparently increase my dues without notice. Since I am not home for a majority of the year, they would (hesitantly) give me free freeze periods for when I go back to school. However, there have been several occasions where I have been mis-charged during my freeze periods and had to call, explain, and send my busy brother who, unlike me, is actually within 100 miles of the gym to go through the trouble of proving my account should be frozen by showing them the flimsy copy of receipts that they give. In addition to their difficult customer service (always rude on the phone, would hang up on you, difficult to reach on the phone at all hours), they would constantly try to fight me in providing a refund and try to guilt trip me with the fact that they were "doing me a favor" by giving me free freeze periods.

Then earlier this year (January, 2015) while I was at school, I noticed that I was mis-charged yet again for the entire month (winter break had ended and freeze slip was signed for until May when I get back for the summer) and they denied my account being frozen. By their "protocol" of needing a person to be there in person to dispute a transaction, I had my busy brother (works past 5PM most days, when their manager would leave by) visit and show them my receipt so they offered me credit for the month of May, which I then accepted. Then I noticed in February that I was charged AGAIN for that month, despite my brother just showing them my receipts and as usual, they tried to refuse a refund. So in March I disputed it with my bank ([redacted]) and showed them evidence of my freeze period with the flimsy copy slip acknowledging I should have been in my free freeze period from the month of January until May and my bank issued me back the two months for false billing. They also recommended that I get a new card so I did, with the hopes that this would be the last time I ever deal with this dishonest business. However, I didn't know anything about the contract stating that in order to cancel my membership, I had to send a cancellation letter 30 days in advance (although according to yelp reviews they would claim to never get it/lose it, anyway).

Therefore, I was in extreme disbelief yesterday ([redacted]) when I received a call (still at school) from a collection agency by the name of Performance Portfolio Management [redacted] telling me that I had $600+ of an outstanding balance to Synergy. The lady from the collection agency told me they had sent a letter for collection last Thursday (10/**/15) but my family checked yesterday and it still has not arrived. Therefore, I am still unclear of what the exact charges are (asked for an email, still have yet to receive as well). My monthly membership fee was $42.60 and they are charging me for the months of May-September which should amount to $256, before overcharge fees. I did ask for details over the phone and she told me they were $2xx from dues and therefore $3xx from late payment and card declining (old card was still on file). She told me she was willing to drop the debt to $400 on the spot and put me on a $100/month payment plan. As great as that sounded, I was still in disbelief that I am expected to pay anything at all for a service that I have not used and to a business that has caused me nothing but stress. I told her that I would get back to her Monday because this week was terrible for me in terms of academics and she agreed. However, they called me again today when I was in class. I do not have the disposable income as a full time student to pay this much money for something I have gained nothing from these past few months and would rather not bother my parents to pay for this nonexistent service.

In addition, I called the gym immediately after my conversation with the CA yesterday ([redacted]) to explain my predicament. However, as usual, the person on the phone was reluctant to let me speak to the manager (who would always give me trouble, anyway) and laughed at my situation. He promised to speak to the manager today ([redacted]) "for 10 minutes" and see what he says. I suggested that I would pay my "outstanding balance" with the hopes that they would possibly consider it as future payment for continuing my membership (against all odds) since they never tried to contact me about my card being declined (they had my number and address since they were able to give it to the CA) and accruing balance, in addition to the fact that I haven't been in there for months (can check history of swiping into gym). But the person on the phone scoffed at this idea as well and said "it didn't make any sense."

I know I was in the wrong for never following up on properly canceling my membership but I believe that I (and many others) have been wronged by this "business" for a while now. I have put up with their shenanigans of improperly charging me and refusing refunds. This is my first time dealing with a collection agency and they are being very confrontational as well. The lady on the phone was sure to make it a point that my "debt" has not been reported to the credit bureau yet and as a college student who just got my first credit card this year and has been carefully trying to build my credit, this worries me greatly.

I understand that I am liable to pay the outstanding balance due to my contract despite the fact that I still don't know what it says exactly and my ignorance. I am willing to pay for a certain amount of the balance because I can accept my negligence but would really prefer not to. I read on one of the negative reviews of the gym that Revdex.com has helped them and can help me, too. Therefore, I really look forward to hearing from you/somebody that could give me some more insight on what I should/could do in this situation.

Thank youDesired Settlement: Don't report this to credit bureau

Adjust this outstanding balance ($600+) accordingly - $0 nothing would be great, considering I haven't used this "service" for the time that I am being charged for and their previous attempts of overcharging me

Review: I canceled this gym when I found out I was pregnant 4 years ago. I sent everything certified mail and they tried charging me the extra 30 days and I allowed it. I was waiting for that and then I was changing my bank accounts. Now collections is calling email stating I owe over $600 for the past 4 years. The charges honestly don't make sense but now the agency is threatening to send it to collections and if they do I'm asking this to small claims court. I would've never thought after 4 years after cancellation that they would come and send me to collection even when I sent in all the correct documents. I threw everything out thinking I was fine and now this happened. They have collections calling me several times a day threatening to ruin my credit. When I asked the collections for proof of what I owe they couldn't even provide it to me but they continue to call and harass me.Desired Settlement: I want collections to stop calling me a threatening me. I do not want this on my credit report because I followed the companies policy on cancelling, but the refused to cancel the membership.

Review: When I tried to cancel my membership because I moved OUT OF STATE, I was met with a lot of trouble. I FOLLOWED their certified mail procedure and I kept the post office's copy of the sent receipt. Synergy emailed me, however, saying my balance was overdue. When I called to resolve the issue, they said they "never received the certified letter." LIARS. That's not my problem! I have my own copy of the receipt from the post office. I followed the gym's instructions to cancel my account. It is not my problem if they LIE and say they never received a copy of the letter. I will not pay nor will I allow my account to falsely be sent to collections. I have negatively reviewed them on every website possible.Desired Settlement: I WANT ALL CHARGES DROPPED AND FOR MY ACCOUNT TO BE CANCELLED IMMEDIATELY.

They should clear my account of whatever charges have accrued for the month of May and cancel my account forever. I want to NEVER hear from Synergy Fitness ever again, and I DO NOT want my name sent in to collections for THEIR lack of organization and honesty. This business is a total sham and should be shut down.

At this time, I have been contacted directly by Synergy Fitness (Astoria) regarding complaint ID [redacted], however my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

They didn't contact me about my complaint, they were telling me I had an outstanding balance and were inappropriately texting me about it, which is highly unprofessional. Synergy Fitness said they never received my certified letter of cancellation, although I have the post office proof that it was sent.

Sincerely,

Review: Back in December of 2014 I went into the gym and wanted to cancel my membership. They advised me to send a certified letter to the gym stating I wanted to cancel. I sent a letter including a doctors note a few days later. For 7 months I was not charged by the gym or contacted in any way so clearly I believed everything was processed correctly. In July 2015 (7 months later) my credit card was shut off, when I called the credit card company they had told me the reason was because Synergy Fitness was attempting to charge my card 7 times! Before this, I never received any phone call, emails, or mail regarding my account. Yet, when I signed up originally they called me everyday to sign up with one of their personal trainers, so obviously hey had my phone number correct. Since it took 7 months to find out my account was still active, I had already discarded any paperwork I was holding on to. Since I've been in contact with them regarding the matter they have forwarded my account to collection. Again, they NEVER ONCE tried to contact me about the account, I found out though my CC company.

I just went into the club to speak to a manager and him and his staff were nothing but rude! Accusing me of lying and told me its not their job to call me if there's an issue! They also accused me of just shutting off my credit card so I can't be charged. I just contacted my cc and they explained that my cc was shut off in January due to a security concern, I had nothing to do with the cancelation.Desired Settlement: I want to make sure my credit isn't affected and I do not want to pay any gym fees past the date of cancelation (December 2014)

Review: This establishment is very unethical in how it handles membership billing. In order to cancel my membership, I had to send a certified letter within 30 days of my next billing date. That, itself, is inconvenient and costly. It costed me $7.99 to do this, because I have a demanding job and cannot make it to the Post Office before 5pm.

My account is charged on the [redacted] of every month. I sent a certified letter that was delivered on July [redacted]. I have all proof that it was delivered including the tracking number being marked as "delivered" on both the [redacted] website and the website that I used to create the certified letter (Letter Stream). I also have a signature on file that the letter was delivered.

On August **, 2014, I was charged as usual for my monthly membership. I have done mounds of research, and this organization has a VERY bad reputation of doing this. I even noticed complaints on the internet by members who were charged for their memberships YEARS after they cancelled their memberships by following proper protocol. I also had to cancel my old debit card and request a new one to keep these thieves from continuing to charge me.

This is completely unacceptable. To top it off, the [redacted] of this gym chain, [redacted], was sentenced to three terms of life imprisonment for murder. That just goes to show how ethical things are from the top down.

As taxing and inconvenient as the cancellation processed proved to be, I submitted everything properly and on time. I absolutely refuse to be another victim of this shady, deceitful business. An example needs to be made out of this matter so that innocent people are not taken advantage of anymore.Desired Settlement: I want to be refunded for the monthly payment that they ILLEGALLY took out of my account, the fee of the certified letter ($7.99). My time is extremely valuable and worth a rather high dollar amount, so I should really sue for my troubles and time wasted trying to resolve a matter that is the fault of a BUSINESS.

Review: Timeline of Events:

1) Signed up for gym membership in September 2012, paid on time via credit card on a monthly basis and attended regularly until June 2013

2) Went on a 6 month medical leave due to a pregnancy and based on doctor's orders from July 2013-February 2014, this was processed by John Black, an employee at the gym, and my card was not charged

3) Called the gym in February 2014 to let them know that I do not want to switch from medical freeze to active status due to not being able to work out 6 weeks after giving birth and needed to find a gym with a daycare. Was told over the phone by Bernice, “You are all set sweetie”, we won’t switch you to active status and I assumed I was all set as far as the cancellation.

4) Got a phone call in July 2014 from the gym saying my card has been getting denied and I owe them money for the gym membership from February until July. I was confused, told them I canceled already, and why are they calling me 5 months later when we could have resolved this right away in March when I supposedly missed the first payment? They informed me that I needed to send a certified letter via mail for the membership to be canceled. I told them when I called and asked what I needed to do, Bernice did not tell me that. She was just dismissive with me and told me yeah ok you are fine. I told them I would so as they require, I would send a certified letter but the request to cancel would be retroactive to Feb 2014. I was told this was fine. I mailed the letter and then called to follow up if they have received it and if I was all set, and I was told by the gym that it was all finished business.

5) Now, at the end of August 2015, I receive a call from a collections agency saying I owe the gym $438.50 for membership dues from Feb 2014-August 2014.

6) Once I received a call from the collections agency informing me of the balance I supposedly owe, I call the gym for 3 days straight, Bernice always answers, and asks me for my name and says that the manager is not available to speak to me, he just stepped out.

7) After 3 days, I decided to go to the gym to speak the manager in person. I called about 30 minutes before and was told by Bernice that he was not available. I come to the gym and lo and behold, he is there. The manager’s name is Pemba.

8) I try to have a conversation with Pemba and explain to him what is going on, and why am I being charged $438.50 for a gym membership that is not active. I asked for the charges print out and an attendance log but he does not want to give it to me. He also does not want to answer any question, is dismissive and rude, tells me to leave the gym and “take it up with a collections agency.”

9) On my way out, I see Bernice. I asked her why she told me my gym membership was not changed to active status, why did she not cancel it, and her response was “Nothing personal mami.”

10) I asked my husband to do me a favor and have a conversation with Pemba to see if we can resolve this as I live on the same block and we are practically neighbors. My husband was able to get a print out of the charges from Pemba but was not able to resolve them.

11) I called and texted George L. who is supposed to be their customer service manager. I spoke to him on two occasions, he said he would discuss my issues with the staff at the Astoria gym but never calls or emails me back. He also advised that I call one of the owners, Salih P[redacted], to complain to him since he is from the same country I am from.

12) I called Salih P[redacted] 3 times and left him messages and he has not returned my phone calls.

I really tried my best to resolve this directly with the gym and give them an opportunity to redeem themselves. They have not been responsive, ignoring me and avoiding me altogether, so I see no other solution but to make official complaints as I believe they are scam artists : 1) Tell people that their gym membership is canceled without informing them of the certified letter requirement so that they can keep charging their credit card 2) stating that they never received certified letters in the mail and 3) charging ridiculously high late payment and account fees while the person is assuming the gym member ship is canceled and then passing it on to the collection agency years later when the fees have accumulated to high amounts.Desired Settlement: Please erase the balance owed of $438.50. I am an honest person with a credit score of 765. I always make sure my bills are paid on time and have no outstanding debt to my name. I do not want to pay this balance as I do not owe it. I also do not want this issue to ruin my credit score as I will be purchasing my own home within the next few months. Thank you.

Review: I followed the cancelation policy and sent a certified mail to the organization. They charged me an annual membership and an additional month. I spoke with the manager when he was not happy with my [redacted] review and he resolved everything and confirmed my membership was canceled. I have email proof from 4/**/15. The manager has been constantly calling me to delete my [redacted] review. Finally today, he was told to stop calling me because he was harassing me. I logged into my bank account and see that he charged my card without authorization.Desired Settlement: My credit card information to be deleted from their system and refund of my money they charged without authorization.

Review: Two years ago I belonged to Synergy Fitness. There is a lot wrong with that place that caused me to want to no longer be a member, so I went in one day to cancel my membership. My information was taken and was told it was cancelled. The following month my credit card was charged again. When I called to let them know they had made a mistake, I was told that you can't cancel in person, but you have to send a letter through certified mail. I was told it was not their problem I received bad information from an employee because the certified mail condition is in fine print in the contract. I wasn't happy, but what could I do and I paid that month. I immediately sent a cancellation letter through certified mail. I thought the issue was over and done with and never heard from Synergy again. It is now 2 years later (maybe longer) and I get a letter in the mail threatening to send me to collections if I do not pay them another month of membership because they are now saying that they received the certified letter on the **of the month and they needed it by the **. When I explained that their records must be mistaken because I took care of it properly years ago and haven't heard from them since, they dared me to prove it. Since I'm not a hoarder I no longer have that receipt from my letter I sent through certified mail. I feel they are trying to scam me out of more money, yet again. I tried speaking with an employee and a manager and they said the only solution is for me to give them my credit card number.Desired Settlement: I would like them to remove this additional charge that they are claiming I accrued two years ago and for them to never contact me again.

Sincerely,

Review: I became a member of Synergy gym in April 2015. I worked out at the gym a handful of times. I signed a contract and left a credit card on file for my monthly fees. Today 8/**/2015 I received a call from a collection agency stating I had an outstanding balance with Synergy gym. I explained to the agency that this was absurd because my gym never called me, emailed me or sent me a letter to notify me that they needed payment from me. The account I had on file was closed due to fraudulent charges and the gym never contacted me to obtain membership fees. I never contacted them because I didn't know they had this card on file.

I visited the gym this evening and spoke with the manager, Temba S[redacted] He basically told me they don't know why I wasn't contacted and that now this is out of his hands. He was very irrational. For a company to contact a collection agency I would assume they have attempted to collect a debt with the customer first and this was not the case. I am now being charged late fees and I don't think this company is excersing good practice.Desired Settlement: I would like to pay my outstanding balance without late fees and my membership cancelled.

Review: My boyfriend and I joined this gym before Synergy bought it back in March 2014. A few months after attending, we are heading to the gym and the establishment is completely dark and closed without a word or a sign on the door. We passed by many times and it remained closed with no explanation yet we were still getting charged monthly during this period. We had no option but to replace the credit cards they were charging as there was no telephone, address or information to go about cancelling and the gym itself was shut down. One month ago, we finally see it's been reopened under a new name and all and we inquire about our issues. They give us a form to fill out and instruct to mail it via certified mail to the address noted. We do as instructed, pay for the certified mail (just to mail it a few blocks away, makes no sense). The certified mail was never signed for and they are STILL charging us. This establishment is taking advantage of people and wasting their time and money. We know of many other customers with a similar experience within our neighborhood and someone needs to put a stop to this. We chose to join a neighborhood gym vs. a NY Sports Club or another chain because of the sense of community and one on one attention but we would NEVER consider it again, as they cannot be trusted. These are the kinds of business practices that make other smaller businesses look bad and eventually non-existent.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund from March 2014 to date for the monthly charges this establishment was making to my account, even when there was nothing but an empty space in the place of what was once a neighborhood gym. I would like this establishment to reevaluate their customer service procedures and their business model in general. This lack of any information has caused stress and money issues for many people and myself.

Thieves! Stealers! Shut them down!
