The Bed and Breakfast Inn at La Jolla Reviews (3)

Review: On 6/30/14, I booked a room for two nights at The Bed & Breakfast Inn. Due to emergency personal matters, I wasn't sure if I would be able to make it to CA, and therefore reached out to them asking if anything could be done regarding my reservation. They initially replied, letting me know that all reservations during June to September are non-refundable but to let them know if I wanted to move my reservation. Since this was non-refundable, I had no option but to proceed with my originally scheduled trip. Upon arrival on 7/15/14 (check-in date), the man working the front desk informed me that my booking had been cancelled. During our correspondence, I had NEVER confirmed cancellation of my reservation and was incredibly shocked to hear this especially after a long trip out to San Diego. Confirmation from both parties is a general, common rule etiquette. I was flustered to begin with upon hearing this, but what made it worse was that the man working the front desk had absolutely no intent or desire to help remediate the situation. What was even more suspicious and distasteful behaviour was that the computer just "happened" to be down that day. He continued to argue that he had sent a follow up email, which never occurred, and I had to show him my entire inbox with the one and only email I had received initially. He obviously did not care. After several phone calls with the owner and I believe manager, they offered an open room for the night. To further add salt to the wound, once the front desk guy "walked over" to the room to check if it was ready yet, he mentioned the room had not been cleaned by the cleaning lady and that we would no longer be able to stay. I am appalled at the general business practice and their behaviour overall, not to mention complete failure to honor my original booking through premature and poorly thought out cancellation on their part. We had to crash elsewhere for the night due to this poor workflow and communication within their business.Desired Settlement: Original booking price was $420, and I was charged $466.42. Since I was not given the services/lodging I had paid for and intended on using (in addition to unauthorized/unconfirmed cancellation without my knowledge), I would like to request a full refund. Thank you.

Review: I am writing to formally request the cash redemption of my gift certificate for its face value of $750. I initially purchased the gift certificate for my parents who have been unable to use it.

Since August 9, 2015 I have attempted to redeem my $750 gift certificate for a three-day stay on at your inn for the weekend between September 4, 2015 and September 7, 2015. After two weeks of almost daily phone calls, delays, and excuses, I was informed on August 21, 2015 by Ms. [redacted] that the owners of the inn had decided my gift certificate would not be honored because it lists December 9, 2012 as the expiration date.

The claim that this gift certificate is not valid because it is expired is not legal under California Civil Code 1749.5 (a)(1) “It is unlawful for any person or entity to sell a gift certificate to a purchaser that contains any of the following (1) an expiration date.”Desired Settlement: Given that this has been a thoroughly frustrating and disappointing experience, I no longer wish to stay at the Inn. I wish to have a refund for the value of this gift certificate. The statute provides for cash redemption of gift certificates. Per California Civil Code 1749.5 (b)(1) “Any gift certificate sold after January 1, 1997, is redeemable in cash for its cash value . . .”

Review: On March 27, 2014 I called the Bed and Breakfast Inn and booked four nights accommodation starting on March 30, 2014. At the time of booking I carefully asked about the quality of the wireless internet connection because we were travelling on business and needed high quality connectivity to fill pages quickly and be able to use the internet to land line phone feature. I was told that there was internet throughout but some rooms had better reception than others. We discussed a suitable room and I booked it using my MasterCard as security.

There was no mention that all four nights accommodation would be immediately charged to my MasterCard. Our travelling experience in the area is that often the MasterCard was not charged before our arrival and sometimes one night would be charged. Never the whole period of accommodation.

When we checked with [redacted] I did the paperwork and there was no mention that I had already paid for all four nights and she showed us our room. The first thing we did was to try to log on to our email, trading accounts, online banking etc and neither of us could connect with any of three devices which were an iPad, a Google Nexus and a laptop. After touring the entire facility while trying to log on with our devices we changed rooms to one we could both get a signal in.

Unfortunately having a signal and being able to get any amount of data are two different things. My laptop worked but neither of our tablets worked. The next morning we met [redacted] who was very nice and when we told her we had to check out she said that unfortunately many people who needed internet access were disappointed and she fully understood. This was when we found out that all four nights had already been charged. [redacted] said that she could process charges but not credits however [redacted] runs the place and would be in that day and she could issue the credit.

We stayed elsewhere in La Jolla for the next three nights and phoned a few times to speak with [redacted] who was never available. Every day I checked my banking and did not receive a credit. In the last month I have emailed [redacted] twice and left messages for her five times. Not once has she returned an email or a call and we still have not received a credit for the three nights.

This is so simple it leaves us in disbelief. If we were told that internet was poor either we would not have booked at all or would have booked one night to see if it was okay. The place is very nice and in a great location.Desired Settlement: Credit for three nights accommodation including taxes which totals $596.34.

The calculation: The rate was $179 per night and the total for four nights was $795.12 divided by four means that one night is $198.78. We were charged $795.12.

$795.12 minus $198.78 = $596.34.
