By subscribing to become a member of the Beecher Cooperative, the prospective member is embarking upon a living experience which is a unique way of providing quality housing for people of all income levels. More and more HUD, local housing agencies, and tenant groups are adopting the cooperative concept to combat the multiple problems caused by displacement of low and middle income persons, a negative by-product of urban revitalization.The Beecher Cooperative is not a profit-motivated venture. Instead, it is a group of persons providing quality housing and a sense of community for themselves. Fundamental to the success of a cooperative is the notion of self-government. Based on democratic concepts, each Cooperative member has the opportunity to have input, either directly or through their elected representatives, in the decision-making process. Through the exercise of this right, every member assures the maintenance of a quality living environment unmatched by other housing available at comparable cost.The Beecher Cooperative, Inc. is a non-profit housing community, whose residents hold membership in a corporation which wholly owns the land and buildings. Once an application is accepted and approved by the Cooperative, the applicant will become a member upon settlement on the share. Membership entitles the individual to reside in an apartment and have a vote in the Cooperative. The affairs of the Cooperative are conducted by a Board of Directors elected by the members, as provided in the By-Laws.I have forwarded your documents to the cooperative's attorney and on the advice of counsel, and because of the litigious propensities of the complainant, we decline tO provide a substantive response to the material she submitted.
