My son has been attending this dojo for a little over four months now. I signed him up because he was having trouble focusing and listening at school and at home. Since signing him up, his behavior and listing skills have gotten a lot better!! He has also had a boost in confidence and has learned how to deal with the kids that have previously picked on him.

The staff and instructors are professional and show pride in their work. They are friendly and all the kids love them. My son is always begging to go to class, and is always asking when he gets to come back. :D

I am proud to have them as a dojo family, and a second home!!!

The Budo Shingikan is a martial arts dojo that teaches a defense martial arts style that anyone from 5 to 75 can learn. It is a martial arts that you can grow old with - not taxing your knees and ankles to the point you feel you have to quit. They teach you practical self defense skills - not something that is rigid and feels more like a complicated dance. On top of these great things the people are like a family, going out to dinner, movie nights, pot luck get togethers on holidays. This is a place with wonderful people.

My son was bullied at school for over two years. It got so bad he was assaulted after school one day at the neighborhood park. The police came and we pressed charges. The Mesa police officer strongly suggested we call the Budo Shingikan School of Japanese Martial Arts. My son has been practicing there for just over six months. He loves it and his self esteem has gone back up. He is confident and can hold his head high again. We appreciate you and thank you all!

My three daughters are under the age of 12, they are all learning self defense and my 3 year old teaches it to her dolls. Your kids are never to young to learn. You get big smiles at the door, and a feel of friendship at the class. Highly recommended!

I have been intensely involved in martial arts for 8 years now. My experience includes Kenpo Karate and Shorin Goju Ryu Karate, the latter of which I pursued to a black belt rank under Grand Master [redacted], 10th [redacted], in Syracuse NY. As I moved to Mesa AZ from Upstate New York two months ago, I did some extensive "shopping around" to find a martial arts school that would fit my standards for continuing my education.
After sitting through classes in various schools in the area, the Budo Shingikan Dojo stood completely apart from all the rest with the quality of its program, and the quality of the students many of which have solid backgrounds and accomplishments in other martial styles. [redacted] students have chosen this school to enhance their previous knowledge and skills by practicing a high level martial system in a community of friendly and avid learners led by a great master. [redacted] has created a school that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect, remarkable discipline (a rare finding in today's martial arts business reality), and opportunity for exquisite quality learning.
I am grateful and honored to be part of [redacted] team and I highly recommend this school if you want your child to learn how to be an amazing human being, or if you want to improve yourself by connecting to and honing a great martial art. The reason why this is possible is that [redacted] sets a firm personal example as he truly lives by the standards he advocates to his students.

I cannot recommend this school enough. It has changed the way I looked at traditional martial arts as well as my perspective on life entirely. Before joining this Dojo, I had very limited experience with martial arts as a whole. However, after having trained here for 6+ months, I've not only learned about the techniques but also the way of the art in a way that I can implement them in my daily life. Classes are always interesting, staff are incredibly friendly, [redacted] embodies the art he teaches along with being the best teacher I've ever had, and it's an experience you'll never forget. I'd highly recommend you give it a shot. If you do, you'll be back for plenty more.

I practiced Aikido years ago, in an orthodox school where it was taught traditional Japanese Aikido, three years ago I decided to come back to this martial art; I was looking for a school that not only would be similar to that, but also complement it and enrich it, it was under the impression that something I would lack if I continue in the same old fashion line of study, I wanted something practical and fun, not as rigid and dogmatic. There are many schools, lineages, associations, situation that characterizes a modern society full of options, and not know where to start. I found my answer in Sensei Darrel's Dojo, his knowledge in several martial arts condensed in Aikido, the Budo philosophy and ethics passed on to their students, and his real interest of that everyone applies these teachings in daily life, persuaded me to be in the right school.

Review: I saw on [redacted] a deal for my kids to sign up for $1.00. When I used the code DOLLAR it reduced the price for one order down to $1.00. My credit card was charged $69.00. I sent screen shots via [redacted] and never heard a response. They deleted the post and I no longer have access to the screenshots No one ever responded to my request for help.Desired Settlement: I want a full refund of the $69.00.

After studying [redacted] arts for many years, my daughter and I were looking to study traditional Japanese martial arts. So far after enjoying the trial, we are hooked! Do not come to this school if you are looking for [redacted]. This school is traditional Japanese, and it is a wonderful experience. In this school everyone is very respectful and helpful, but you are in charge of your journey. How much you learn and grow is equal to the effort you put into it. Every class I learn something that is applicable to self defense and life. It is a wonderful, friendly, experience.

You SHOULD NOT send your teenager here if any of the following statements apply: 1) You think constant bullying will help build his/her character; 2) You prefer that your teen remain socially awkward & insecure; 3) That whole friendship & trust thing is overrated; and/or 4) Your student as a 4.0 GPA and doesn't require any additional focus or discipline.

HOWEVER, if your teen more closely resembles a member of the human race - specifically a shy or bullied one - you should know that this DoJo focuses on DEFENSIVE martial arts. Your child won't become the bully, but he/she will learn how to subdue the bully with said bully's own momentum. Even better, your child will walk with a quiet confidence & (if challenged) glide into that deceptively fluid martial arts stance that even the most dense bully instinctively recognizes as a signal to move along.

An unexpected side-benefit, when you tell your teen to unload the dishwasher, you may hear a rapid "Aye" as he/she hops up to get right on that. I'm warning you now, so you don't pass out when it happens.

I highly recommend this dojo.

To anyone interested in traditional martial arts, exercise or just general self improvement I recommend Budo Shingikan as strongly as possible.

I personally was only looking for a place to try martial arts again 20 years after a short course in college. I didn't expect to find a group of people that treat you as part of their dojo family right from day 1 and sincerely care about you and your interests.

They are absolutely open to all people willing to come onto the mat and learn something new; be it a few nights a month or most nights of the week, children & Adults of all ages. All are treated with an equally warm welcome and I must absolutely recommend this to anyone with an interest in learning something new.

We enrolled our son in the Kids Martial Arts Program and The Budo Shingikan School of Japanese Martial Arts because he was bullied at school. We wanted to provide him with a way to learn how to protect himself through self defense in blocking. We checked out the school in April and we immediately enrolled him. We were welcomed not only by the Kancho and the children's Sensei, but by the individuals who are students there. We immediately felt a sense of family and continue to feel that we are part of the family to this day. My son has and continues to learn blocks, techniques, the Japanese language, and also things about the Japanese culture. Also, his Sensei takes a portion of their class to talk about values, safety, and respect! Not only are we seeing our son grow in his self confidence and ability to protect himself, but he is working hard at keeping a positive and respectful attitude. Kancho and Sensei expect their students and families to show respect which is needed especially in today's society! This is a great Dojo to learn from, interesting and wonderful people to spend time with, and teachers who are making a difference whether it be with the adults or children who are learning. This makes a big difference and it has become a family for us!

We came to the Budo Shingikan School for my son's friends birthday party. The seinsi went all out to make the birthday boy and all the kids happy and she was a success too. Both of my children fell in love with [redacted] and everyone in the dojo. We took part in a trial of the lessons at the school and the only thing I can say is I'm glad we decided to stay! The owners put forth an amazing effort to work with us on our budget. The classes are fun for the children involved and for us parents sitting on the sidelines watching our children enrich their lives. I can honestly say it's not just a business, it's a family and everyone is welcome! I would recommend anyone, young or old, to give them a shot. I know they won't be sorry.
