The Dobo of Columbus Reviews (1)

I would first like to state that Ms. [redacted] has stated some opinionated information.  I would like to address each issue one by one.  The email that was sent to me (the Director) was addressed via phone call and the issue was not a refund, it was playing time and the fact that she left her...

son and brother at the practice facility after practice was over and expected the coaching staff to wait for her return (the coach actually waited, but she did not see him at the time).  As stated in the pre-season parent meeting, the fee that is paid by the parents covers their tournament fees, uniforms, shooting shirt, t-shirt, and practice time.  Never does it guarantee playing time.  It guarantees an opportunity to train and practice with our organization and EARN playing time.  During our phone conversation about playing time, I explained to Ms. [redacted] that she is asking the wrong questions when addressing her brother's playing time.  The question should be, "What does my brother have to do to get more playing time?"  Her brother joined the organization without trying out, or even being seen by our coaches.  Ms. [redacted] asked for a favor, that her brother be allowed to participate even though he did not try out for the team.  As a courtesy to Ms. [redacted] (since her son was already in the organization), we allowed her brother to join one of our teams. We created a 'special' payment schedule for Ms. [redacted] so that she could pay for the two young men without sacrificing her living expenses.  The $325 she paid for her brother covered all of his gear (that he received), the practice and tournament fees for which he attended. In essence, Ms. [redacted] still owes fees for what her brother has received in gear and training. The practice site was moved because the original site was no longer usable.  Both sites (original and new) are located on the north side of Columbus, and were actually 5-10 mins apart from each other.  There really was no significant difference between the two locations.  But the new site had a better floor and was overall better for the team to practice in.  It was the coach's responsibility to communicate (all communication goes through each team's coach/team parent) the change in practice venue since he is the one who requested the move.  Our policy has always been NO REFUNDS due to the turnover rate of players in AAU Basketball.  If families are allowed to quit and get money back that is already budgeted for a TEAM, that leaves the remaining families unable to continue their season due to a player or two that has quit.  The policy is addressed in the pre-season parent meeting, it is highlighted on the registration form right above the signature line. Parents are reminded of the policy when we talk due dates for payments.  Although Ms [redacted] did not sign a registration form for her brother, she was well aware of the policy due to her signing her son up on the same type of form.  Our organization is not stealing anything from anyone.  On the contrary, we are seeking to make "Ordinary Players, Extraordinary People." It is bigger than basketball for us.  We want to invest in the youth and raise up young people that know what sacrifice, dedication, hard work and team work mean, and how it relates to success presently and later in life.  Throughout the entire Spring Season there were a number of players that played on her brother's roster.  The most suited at one time was 11.  A typical team keeps 10-15 players for practice purposes, injury or absences.  This number was consistent throughout the season.  The team played a total of nine tournaments (Ms. [redacted] pulled her brother after the 6th tournament, after she was issued an email that her final payment was  past due  and non payment jeopardized her brother's continued involvement), the coach cancelled the last tournament due to competition levels not being up to par.  The team was given additional training sessions (two 2 hour sessions) to make up for the last tournament.  Ms. [redacted] chose not to attend those sessions.  It seems to me that Ms. [redacted] is upset that her brother did not play as much as he wanted to.  There was no complaining or issue with her son and his playing time.  She never requested a refund for her son who played on the same team. Refunds are not given because a parent is unhappy.  There were plenty of opportunities for her and her brother to seek some additional training or practice with his coach, or with myself the Director and Head Trainer.  Those opportunities were not taken advantage of. I feel bad that the young man did not get the chance to work on his game and improve due to being pulled from the team.  I believe if he was able to continue and work on his skill, he would have made improvements throughout the season.  Practice and training is where you improve.  Games are a time to show that you have done just that.  We run a clean program with clear communication.  There were no false promises or lies told to any family that chose to play with theDOBO.  Unfortunately, Ms. [redacted] did not get what she wanted for her brother, but I believe that if she had taken my suggestion to speak with the coach about where her brother could improve, and also seek additional help from myself, Mr. [redacted] would have had a better experience. We stand by our organization's policies.  We will continue to build the youth in Central Ohio through our programming.
