On September 2, 2014, we at The Empowerment Partnership were forwarded an email from The [redacted] (AIP), which is the certifying board we are affiliated with. AIP administers the certification test to students who have successfully completed our Accelerated NLP...

Practitioner Training. The email I received was in reference to a student who had attended our Accelerated NLP Practitioner Training in [redacted], May 2014. Upon completion of the training the student had received an email from AIP with the link to an online NLP Practitioner Certification Test. Certification is optional for students and if one desires to pursue certification, they need to successfully complete the NLP Practitioner Certification Test by scoring a minimum of 75%, and successfully complete and submit their 30 Day Action Plan along with their certification fee of $45 directly to the certifying board, AIP. In this matter, AIP informed us that the student had answered 90 questions correctly out of a total of 121 questions, which equaled to 74.39%. Again AIP requires that a student must receive a minimum score of 75% to be considered passing and receive certification.
AIP did share with us that an email was inadvertently sent to the student congratulating them on having passed their test. Soon after AIP realized the discrepancy, they immediately sent an email informing the student of the mistake of the passing notification. AIP advised that the student called their office and left a voice message to return their call. Upon returning the call the student expressed her feelings on the situation and allowed little no time for AIP to respond before she angrily hung up the phone. She left the conversation before AIP could provide her with options. The student then replied to AIP via email insisting that she had passed and when she did not receive an exception demanded a refund of $97. AIP had forwarded her email to The Empowerment Partnership to clarify and address the issue of a refund request. Below is the training guarantee and refund policy for the training:
You have five (5) days from the date you enroll in the NLP Practitioner Certification(r) Training to cancel your agreement and have 100% of your deposit refunded. Thereafter, there is a non-refundable cancellation fee of 50% PER TRAINING SESSION. Once the training has started, if at any time prior to the conclusion of your training, you should become dissatisfied with the program, simply meet with an Empowerment Partnership representative to discuss your dissatisfaction and if we are unable to resolve the problem, we will refund your entire enrollment fee less the non-refundable cancellation fee. All materials received at the training must be returned to The Empowerment Partnership to be eligible for the refund.
When a student enrolls for an NLP Practitioner Training, they are informed of the following in regards to certification:
Certification:
To qualify for certification, you must be in attendance for the entire 4-day training. Upon completion of the training, students will be emailed a link with the NLP Certification Test, 30-Day Action Plan, and certifying board information. Once the test and 30 Day Action Plan has been completed, it will need to be submitted directly to the certifying board, the [redacted] (AIP), along with your certification fee of $45 USD.
On September 2, 2014, we emailed the student, informing her that a refund of her $97 was not possible as that amount was paid to The Empowerment Partnership for her attendance to the Accelerated NLP Practitioner Training. She attended and completed the training. Her issue with her test score is with the certifying board, AIP, as they administer the certification tests and oversee certification standards. AIP made a mistake with the notification that she had passed, but again rectified their mistake by following up with a correction to that email. It should also be noted that when a student completes their online test from AIP, they do receive notification, which provides them with the breakdown of how many questions they answered correctly out of the total number of test questions, and the grade percentage it is equal to. So in this case, although AIP had initially sent the wrong email to the student, the student should have already been aware of the score once she completed the test.
We hope that the information provided helps to clarify why we denied the student's request for a refund of her training, and the difference between our training company, The Empowerment Partnership, and the certifying board we are affiliated with, The [redacted] (AIP), and the roles that each play with regards to this issue.
