The Gym at Bloomfield Crossing

I have been a member of "THE GYM AT BLOOMFIELD CROSSING" for 5 years...the staff is friendly and make you feel more like a family member than a gym member...the facility is maintained impeccably and the equipment is kept in excellent condition...although the client base is sizeable, the facility is never overcrowded and with the excellent selection of weight and cardio equipment there is never a problem getting a piece of equipment to work on...all classes are included in the membership, making the monthly fees very reasonable...I highly recommend "THE GYM" to anyone, young or old who would like a great place to train....

Review: In the summer of 2012 I signed up for a gym membership at The Gym because I was home for the summer. The only way I could sign up for a membership was to sign up for the year (or so I was told), so that's what I did and then planned to cancel it in September. When I tried to cancel my membership in late August I was told everything was all set. Then I get charged for September (at this point I am back at school in [redacted], no longer living in CT). I call The Gym and they tell me that I did not cancel my membership! So I ask how I can do that and they tell me that I need proof of residency in another state and that I am going to school there, etc. So I fax all of that to them, 2 weeks go by and they still haven't canceled my account. So I call and they tell me that I never sent them anything, so I send it again, via email and via fax and still nothing. This continues until I come home for winter break (it is now december and I have been charged $20 per month for a membership I wanted canceled $60 ago. So now I go to The Gym, cancel my membership in person, sign a letter to prove it and then I went abroad to [redacted] for my Spring semester. I get back and have been charged $40 for a membership cancelation fee that they said they needed a month notice, they had 5 months notice from me back in September that I wanted to cancel. Now they won't return my calls, and the collection agencies keep sending me larger and larger bills. I live in [redacted] now and I am not able to come back to CT to handle all of this in person. They won't return my calls and I don't think it is right that they are charging me almost $200 now that they never should have!!!Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Other (requires explanation)

I would like my debt with The Gym to be cleared up; I don't feel as if I owe them money and I would like to not have to pay them anything due to the mishandling on their part of my membership cancellation and considering they have already gotten an extra $80 from me and now they are asking for more? I'm appalled at the way this has been handled and the way they treat their customers.

The Gym offers several memberships other than the 1 year membership. During the off school season we offer the students our 3 month membership for $99.Ms. [redacted] stated that she knew she was going to cancel her membership in September and on the contract there is the 3 month membership option listed. Instead Ms. [redacted] joined the gym on 6/6/13 with a contract of 1 year at $19.99 a month. Ms. [redacted] has stated that she telephoned the gym to cancel her membership in late summer. Per our contract The Gym requires a 30 day written notice to the health club and if the reason is due to a move we require proof of the move. The front desk manager spoke to Ms. [redacted] in October 2012 due to lack of use of the gym. Ms. [redacted] called back and stated that she was at school and was not going school in [redacted]. At this time Ms. [redacted] was told that it required a 30 written notice and proof of the move out of state. we also offered for her to freeze her account so she can utilize the gym upon her return. On 1/9/13 Ms [redacted] came into the gym with a cancellation notice and proof of her move. at this time she was told that with the 30 day written notice she would be responsible for the February dues. Ms [redacted] balance to the gym is $41.26. This is her dues of $21.26 including tax and $20 fee from the billing company due the credit card not working. The collection agency has been contacted to confirm the correct amount owed of $41.26 due to the gym. we are not aware of any other type of contact from Ms. [redacted] after her cancellation notice in January 2013, The collection agency received the account on 7/9/13 and would have contact with the client after this date.
