bathroom renovations
The worst company ever. They were supposed to finish my project by end of June. By October, they still had not even started master bath and other 2 baths were incomplete. They very rarely showed up to work and when they did, they could never stay the whole day. Always had other projects to do. Absolutely no communication when the crew did not show up. Wouldn't answer emails, texts or phone calls to provide any explanation. Never gave us itemized bill, even though we requested it numerous times. Crew did very substandard work. Dealing with this company was a nightmare. Filed a complaint with BBB but Homestar lied and said things like we sent the crew away when they came to our house. So I know now that whatever I say, they will come back with a bunch of lies. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. I'm not sure where the "crew" came from but I'm pretty sure they just hired day laborers off the street. They took no responsibility for the terrible job they did. Please do not be fooled by their fancy brochures and false promises. It will be the biggest regret you have if you hire this really awful company. I will provide additional info for anyone wanting it. There's simply not enough room here to describe my terrible experience.

They helped me with my insurance company and got me to where I am now. In my home.

Worse and most stressful business I ever had to deal with. Complete rip-off, con artists, very dishonest with timeline to start and complete repairs after contract is signed. Took them 9 months after contract was signed, and 7 month after receiving approval from homeowners wind/storm insurance company to start repairs. I had to keep calling them on a weekly basis to get an honest answer, that also was useless. Unprofessional staff, not returning complaint calls and follow ups in reference to unsatisfactory repairs and property damages caused by inexperienced day laborer found in street corners construction workers. Do not be fooled by their sales pitch, the presentation folder and leaflets displayed during contract negotiation. Homeowners need to be very careful entering into contract with this company, especially after major storm damages. Would not recommend them to my worse enemy.

Great Company. Professional every step of the way. Always on top of their workers and progress of jobs being completed. I highly recommend this company for your roofing or construction projects. If you use them, tell them I sent you. You won't be disappointed. They put on a new roof on my home and repaired the inside where a tree fell through our home.
Give them a call. You will be glad you did.

Client: J ***, Snellville, Ga.

Very poor customer service, time management, and personnel management. Used dishonest sales tactics, and missed completion date by two months.
We chose this company for hurricane restoration. The salesman made a lot of promises that seemed too good to be true but we signed with them because they were an all-inclusive contractor and we figured they would cause us the least headaches. we were very wrong. The project managers had no control over our project from the get go. Jobs were not being scheduled at all let alone in a timely manner, unless we called every day asking when the job would be scheduled. we were given an estimated completion date of 30 days. it took over 90 days to complete. We anticipated set backs, but the set backs were all due to negligence on the managers' parts, and a lack of respect for our property by the workers. The workers constantly littered our property with trash and cigarette butts, and though I was assured someone would come pick them up, it never happened and I had to do it myself. The use of our restroom was deplorable as we came home to a urine covered toilet and floor on more than one occasion and even found fecal matter in our restroom trash can. even after we were assured the workers would no longer have permission to use our restroom, the conditions persisted. this was due to a complete lack of supervision of the working crews as no manager was ever present, nor did any project manager ever come to the house to inspect completion of assigned tasks. On more than one occasion we called and asked the project manager when a certain portion of the job would be complete and they told us it had been completed several days prior. This was false, as we were standing in the home, looking at the unfinished work they were assuring us had already been completed.
We were given individual job time quotes (ie: drywall will take 3 days, then mudding will take 3 days, then trim 2 days, etc) however, deadlines were never met, and the subsequent job was not scheduled for over a week after the first job was completed. Again, no project manager came to our house to ever verify satisfactory completion of each step. I essentially had to do the project manager's job for him as I was the only one to check on the home and report status to the main office. the accounting department also failed to work with us when we asked them for an explanation of all charges. Since our insurance money was sent to us by our insurance company along with an itemized list of payments, we had to verify every payment made to Homestar to ensure accuracy. Homestar never sent us an itemized list of work completed with their invoices, so there was no way to compare their invoices with what was provided by our insurance company. When we explained this to them, and told them that we just wanted to make sure the payments matched up, they refused to work with us and threatened to take us to collection. When we asked about the incentives promised by the salesman, they acted like we were insane, and of course the salesman never answered any calls or texts after the contract was signed. With all the fighting back and forth, they reluctantly agreed to give us a $2,000 discount for our inconvenience. We paid what was supposed to be our final bill, but then one month later, they sent us another invoice for $2,000... coincidently the same amount that they had discounted us. When we asked for an explanation as to how we were still receiving invoices after our final bill, they again did not provide an explanation and threatened to take us to collection. We paid the final bill just so we can be done dealing with them and asked for something in writing to say that all debts were satisfied so they didn't try to pull another phantom charge sometime in the future. The service representative made a comment about the negative review I wrote on social media and then insinuated that we were dishonest people trying to cheat them out of their money. Frankly, it was never "my" money to give as the house is owned by the bank, which is all the more reason why we attempted to verify each bill.

Desired Outcome

We don't want anything to do with this company, but don't want anyone else to go through what we had to endure with them. They falsely advertise themselves on social medial by deleting all negative comments and remarks and blocking the person who made the remark. Customers need to have a means to research the company and get honest feedback from previous customers, and with this company, there is no other way to do that. Customers should have access to all reviews, good and bad, so they can make an informed decision. I'm not sure how Revdex.com does company ratings, but the heinous treatment and service we received from this company needs to be known by others. I have never reported a company to Revdex.com before in my entire life. I'm not "out to get anyone" or make any money from this, I just want some measure of justice and for a company to be held accountable for their actions.

I have met with a couple of my team members on Friday and have an additional meeting on Monday to discuss this property. I want to make sure that I have all of our information together before we provide additional response. Our official response to this complaint will be made by Monday at close of business.

was charged 50% extra for a roof that was completely done incorrectly, now won't make it right or finish the job
My house was damaged by Hurricane Florence. I was told by the sales person Roger for The Homestar group that the earlier I signed the contract with them the first in line I would be. I signed the contract with them as they claimed that they would and could do the work that I needed and that they charge only of that the Insurance company paid for. They also stated that they could do everything from roof to crawlspace and that it would take roughly 6 weeks to complete. They came and did my roof, only on the main house and not on the detached garage. I found out later that the reason that it was missing off of the garage that the entire building was missing from their scope of work as well as the crawl space and all of the flood damage and one of the rooms missing, and then stupid thing like they had that I had carpet in the kitchen. The amount that they were supposed to charge me was $8,450. They charged me in 2 different amounts, 1 for $9,815 and another $4,031. I didn't even realize that they had over charged me $5,396. But then the roof started to leak. We've had 5 separate leaks since the new roof has been put on, the roof decking is delaminating and pieces cracked offthe size of my arm, and soft spots and droopy areas that create dips and pools in the roof. Every time we have had them back out to fix the leak they state, "Its leaking because there is no flashing" and then they caulk it. As well as they didn't even finish putting the drip edge around the roof, they just stopped. Except I went back through my estimate and documents, and we PAID for flashing, the roofer just never put it on. So now because of the leaks that they caused by not completing the project and doing it right, we have had 5 separate leaks, but now have water damage and mold growth on areas that were not caused by the roof being damaged in Hurricane Florence. It took them 6 months to come and finish doing the garage roof, except they left the garage roof debri in my front yard ,never picked up the nails, we had to go buy our own rolling magnet to pick up all of the nails as we kept picking them up in our feet walking through the yard. Due to their negligence and it taking 8 months and STILL basically no work has been done, my family and I have exhausted our Additional Living Expenses coverage through our insurance company. our house is Molding. basically no work has been done and they have caused more damage than they have helped. In the mean time, my family of 5 and 3 dogs are living in a camper in my back yard, that I'm paying for out of pocket due to I got caught up with a company that promised to get me back in my house in 6 weeks, and it's been 8 months and I still don't have a working roof despite paying $13,846, and paid over $22,000 in additional living expenses to be out of the home so that they could at least do the Demo and Mold remediation which they have not. So now I have to get the entire roof ripped off and redone. I gave them ample opportunities, gave a complaint in writing directly to the owner, allowing plenty of time for them to get roofers back out, AFTER he blew me off for our phone call that we had scheduled. He said he would look into it and get back with me, and that was 2 weeks ago after me complaining since NOVEMBER about my roof leaking and having 5 leaks since. I have not heard from anyone for 2 weeks now. Every single time that I have voiced my irritation that work has still not begun I get the exact same answer, we are starting next week. I've endured that response since October and the only job they did, was completely incorrectly, nailing shingles to compromised decking, never put on flashing and never completed the drip edge, and the garage roof, is still sitting in my front yard after being there since April 15th, 5 weeks ago! Now I've had to find a new contractor, most are years out now as I waited so long, and will take at the very least 3 months to complete once they actually begin.

Desired Outcome

I want a refund of the full $13,846 that I've paid the Homestar group so far, the $250 in labor + $650 in dumpster rental it's going to cost me to hire someone else to clean up the roof left in my yard, the additional $6,000 I'm being quoted for Mold remediation than what the insurance had, the $1,000, it's going to cost me to repair the water heater closet that was damaged by one of the leaks, the $2,000 in additional walls that were damaged by the other leaks. Which is $23,746, once I actually get another contractor I will have more exact numbers. And I would also like the $20,000 Additional Living Expenses I've used up because I vacated my property under the impression that it would take them as quoted, 6 weeks to complete back in November.

The Homestar Group Response • May 24, 2019

This customer has complained about the issue and we have sent our PM to the site to inspect and we did make the repairs to some areas that were concerned. I offered to the customer that we could hire "together" an inspector that would look at the issue in a non bias way to get us an answer on what they thought but the bill needed to be paid by both parties and we needed to meet on site for the results. The home is located in a low area and when the hurricane happened it flooded their crawl space as well as their garage area fully. So what we witnessed at our last inspection could have been water from the recent rains on the ground in the low areas and not on the roof or ceiling areas. We would also like to make Revdex.com aware that the Ins Company did not want to pay for alot of work that needed to be completed. The ins company originally gave the customer around 35K (ish) for the claim and Homestar fought the ins company and got the customer over $80,000 for their claim and that fight for the money that they deserved took a very long time to complete. Fighting an insurance company is not easy especially when you are pointing out that the amount should be double. WE won that fight got the customer double the amount of money to fix their home. I have asked for a independent inspector to review the roof and will continue to want a independent inspector to review the home so that we can resolve this. It is the only fair way to make a decision on a home that was built in 1974 that every time there is 2" of rain that falls the grounds around the home as well as the crawl space flood with water. WE as a company are more than welcome to honor a independent inspector to review this so we can resolve it. I am sending the customer an email right now to get an answer on our response.

Customer Response • Jun 03, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The business has stalled for another 2 weeks. I have stated multiple times that I already am getting a 3rd party inspection on top of the inspection that his own roofer already confirmed and completed. His own employees are the ones who alerted me that the roof wasn't done right before I had another inspector, another contractor, and have ordered an ASHI Certified inspector to come to record an inspection of the roof as well as the county inspector is also being scheduled to come out as well, so I've already hired the inspections because here we are 2 months later, no work, no inspection since he doesn't believe his own employees and have just drug this out to a ridiculous amount of time without caring that he's left a family homeless and no rush at all, because according to his estimator, "have 94 of these right now". His PM has been out several times, and seen the water damaged roof. He mentions in his statement that every time it rains 2 inches there is water in the crawlspace. Yes, there is, still, since the Hurricane 9 months ago that he was hired to do as well and haven't touched it yet. But I haven't paid for it, so yes that is another issue that I wasn't even going to bring up, but since the can of worms was brought up, because the muck out he was hired to do 9 months ago that was not being dispute by the insurance and was approved back in September, they never touched yet, so yes, every time it leaks even 2 inches was it still coming in due to the flood damage has compromised and changed the area around the crawlspace and have left areas where water comes in, even in 2 inches. Because it's been 9 months and they still haven't addressed the crawlspace. However, the 2 inches of water in the crawlspace is not causing new water damage on the 2nd floor roof of the house. If he had taken the time to read ANY of the emails that I have stated this or viewed the pictures I have sent, he would have known this and not have thrown out such a bogus answer. If he had spoken to his own roofer that his PM had walk my roof to inspect it himself back in April who was the one to alert me that there was no flashing put on the chimney either and found several soft spots in the decking and recommended back in the beginning of April that the whole roof had to be redone. But no, Homestar now refuses to acknowledge my complaints still. Has drug this out an additional few weeks with this ridiculous response to a roof leaking 5-6 times since my complaints were filed here. And now wants to come in person mid this week to inspect which I have told him numerous times that I have no issue with nor have had an issue with since I first reported the first leak back in November. Just a days after the roof was completed. His own employee was the one who alerted me of the compromised decking in April, it is now June, 2 months later and still he won't even acknowledge a solution, just wants to suggest hiring an inspector. I told him that's fine. Now he wants to see it in person. Meanwhile, I am homeless and he's drug just the roof out for 9 months when quoted 6 weeks. And has not touched any of the other work that needs to be completed so that we can move back in our home. 9 months! Then I sent him pictures with the roof debris that his roofer left in my front yard. So while he has wasted another 2 weeks, another 2 weeks of my family being homeless, he has still not addressed the issue, or proposed a solution, just more stall tactics for what? He can inspect. I'm sure he will see the same things that I've been sending in pictures, that I will be more than happy to supply for this complaint, since November, that his own employees have seen, the inspectors that I've already had out there, but if he needs to see in person, fine, I have made myself available to accommodate his schedule when he can come from GA to inspect himself since he doesn't believe his own employee's word, Jose, and he has drug it out again till this Wednesday, though he has not "narrowed down a time when (he) will be available to come inspect (himself)." We held a phone call last week, after it was rescheduled several times to where I aired the SAME exact grievances as I did May 8th, only difference was now it was 9 months not 8. But he is yet to address specifically the leaking botched roof, absence of flashing, caulking used in lieu of flashing, that not 1 other job he was hired to do has even been started nor completed, even though he's had the final insurance report since March, that he claims he helped get, when in actuality it was his estimators negligence that the estimate that they submitted wasn't accepted because they had sooooo many errors, missing rooms, buildings, carpet in my kitchen... that it took an extra 4 months of me chasing their estimator to get a copy then get their bogus estimate corrected, which still 9 months later they haven't completed that either.

Home Star was coming to do some plumbing on Friday March 29, 2019 between 8-11am. I took of work to be home. It's 12:45pm and they have not call, come or emailed, I've reached out to the company and no response

Desired Outcome

Contact by the Business Come after I get off work

The Homestar Group Response • Apr 10, 2019

Our apologies for the late response to this complaint.

We were made aware by the resident that an appointment had been missed. We spoke with the resident and let her know that we would honor her schedule so that she wouldn't have to take off from work again to get the repairs completed.

We had rescheduled the appointment with her so that our technician would come in on the weekend.

We didn't respond to this complaint at the time because we felt that the issue had been resolved as far as getting the resident rescheduled.
