The Homestead, L. C.

My husband and I had reservations at the Homestead for June 29th and 30th. We arrived on the afternoon of the 29th, checked in, walked the grounds and had dinner. We went to our room after dinner to change and planned to watch a movie that they were showing the guest that night. While we were in our room, it began to storm, the electricity went out. When it became day light, I made my way down to the front desk. I ask the desk clerk if he knew when the power would be restored and he said that they did not know because most of Virginia's electricity was out. I then said we would like to check out and I would like my bill. The desk clerk said he understood and that he would check with the desk manager to see if we would be charged for the night. I then went back to the room to gather our things. We then went back to the desk and were told that we only owed $91.92 for our food, and there would be no charge for the night. We were satisfied with this. Then a couple of weeks later I got my credit card bill and had been charged $248.00 for the night. I called the Homestead, spoke with [redacted] in accounting, explained to her what we had been told. She said that she would check with the (I believe) reservation or rooms manager about the charge and would get back to me. She finally called me back and said that the manager said the charge would stand but we wouldn't be charged for an early check out. I said that wasn't what I was told but even if they did want to charge something that $248.00 was an excessively amount for a hot, dark,"feel your way to the bathroom" (which by the way wasn't safe)night. She agreed , but she couldn't do anything about it. I was never given any kind of documentation showing they were charging me this amount . I was only given a statement for the $91.92. We would have stayed the extra night but they didn't have any idea when power was to be restored. I do not believe that this is the proper way to do business. We believe we are entitled to a refund.
