I stayed at the Van Landingham Inn on Memorial weekend. While en route on Friday, I was contacted by the Inn to alert me that there would be no-one at the Inn to check me in, so they would leave my room key under the mat at the Carriage House. Fine
On Sunday morning, May 27, I was told by the staff of the Inn that they were going to be closed on Memorial Day, all the staff had been given the day off. The woman in charge of the desk thought I could probably go to the Moorehead Inn and have breakfast the morning of Memorial Day. The evening of May 27, I returned to the Inn and the desk clerk let me know that no-one would be at the Inn that evening, but that my key worked on the front door of the house so I could let myself in. I asked if I could move my room from the Carriage House to the main house since I would be staying there alone, and she said that it was not possible. I noted that there were no other guests at the Inn that evening.
After consulting with my husband and my daughter, I decided that I did not want to be the only guest at the Inn and further, did not want to be staying all by myself at the back of the property. I unlocked the Inn, left my keys and my invoice at the desk, wrote on the invoice that I was not comfortable staying there all by myself and that I was checking out. I asked to be refunded for the final night's stay. I left the Inn and checked into the Marriott.

Refund I would like to be refunded for the Sunday evening charge: $176.33. The entire three night stay was billed to my credit card. I have also filed a protest with my bank.
This is the first we've heard of Ms. displeasure. She did leave a note on her folio regarding her checking out early and requesting a refund, with no details.
It's correct that we were working with a skeleton staff Memorial day weekend. The desk notes indicate that Ms. was fine with the staffing and never indicated any concerns. Ms. was also not the only person staying at the inn. There was one other guest in residence, as well as our innkeeper, who lives at the inn. It makes no sense that Ms. would have been told otherwise. It is correct that she was the only person in the building she was assigned to. However, all of our doors and windows are secure and there are no security issues here.
The notes from the desk attendant the day in question indicated that Ms. informed her that she would be leaving very early the next morning and no breakfast would be needed. There are no notes regarding a request to move rooms and there are no notes regarding an expressed fear of being alone. The desk attendant does not recall any conversation of this nature.
Ms. checked out early and did not notify the innkeeper (whose number she had) of doing so. Therefore, following our standard of care, there is no basis for a refund.
