The University Prep Center Reviews (27)

Review: I purchased software from University Prep Center in January, 2012, for my daughter to improve her ACT score that she had taken in 2011. We were guaranteed a 5 pt increase otherwise we would get our money back. She went through the whole pgm, took the ACT several times. She did not score the guaranteed 5 pt jump that they said would happen. So I contacted them, verbally told her the test scores. A women who answered the phone told me to print those scores from ACT's website and send them back w the software and the #RM. I received that number and boxed it all up and sent it to their address on their brochure. The women told me it would take 6 weeks to issue the refund check. It is now 2 months past the 6 weeks. I have left msgs 4 times on their phone and fax number and they have not returned the call. They have chosen not to return the phone msgs repeatedly.Desired Settlement: Full refund as promised.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the UPC in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have attached the files I previously sent them via mail. Since they left me with no fax number in their correspondence, the files are attached to this email. You can see no 5 point increase. I will not be satisfied until I receive and cash their check.

Review: We ordered UPC (University Prep Center) SAT and ACT prep software when a representative from that company called us on the phone. I cannot get the scholarship Guide program to open. We have tried to call the company and all we get is a busy signal.Desired Settlement: We would like to be refunded $199.00 that we paid for the set of discs. We would gladly send them back, but I see different addresses here and am not sure where I would send them. I cannot get a hold of any one on the phone number on the package. I am concerned after reading other complaints on the Revdex.com site. I am not interested in sending them back only to have the company not respond or tell me that I have the wrong address.

Review: I find it difficult to list the primary nature of my complaint. My complaints are: The failure to respond to phone calls or written requests for assistance or support; a failure to honor money-back guarantees; a failure to honor a contract or agreement, and the company has processed an unauthorized bank debit. I initially purchased this test prep for my son and I was clearly told that I would be able to return the product for a full refund within 30 days. NO documentation was included in my package regarding how to return the product for a refund if needed. I called the company at the number on the product ([redacted]) MANY times for info regarding how to return the product. I called WELL before my 30 days expired. However, an "answering service" always answered and said they would take a message. NO ONE EVER called me back. Then, on 9/30/13 I was charged an 39.95 monthly fee to my debit. I called back to the company because I was very frustrated. I had been unable to return the unwanted product and now they had me on an ongoing monthly charge. I spoke to a nice young man named, "[redacted]" at the company who apologized for my inconvenience. He FINALLY explained to me (he was the first person to provide any helpful info) that I needed to email customer service to request a refund for the original product. He said someone would then contact me with information on how to complete the process. He also stated that he would extend my return window for another month due to my inconvenience and the fact that no one had ever called me back. I emailed the designated customer service email ([email protected]) on 10/2, 10/6. and 10/9 requesting a refund. I finally received an email response on 10/12 stating that I was not eligible for a refund because I had exceeded the 30 day window. I have now called them and emailed them multiple times explaining clearly the amount of effort I put in to trying to return the merchandise within the 30 day window. I also explained that I am out of work (a former federal employee) and this is a very big deal to me. I feel like the company intentionally does not respond to consumers so that it is impossible for the product to be returned. This really feels like a scam to me. I even explained that I planned to report them to the Revdex.com if they continued to refuse to respond to my emails and calls. I have not heard from anyone. To be clear, the ONLY time they have ever responded to me was that one email to tell me they would not refund my purchase price or allow me to return their product. I would hate for other families who are trying to save money for their kids for college to also be scammed and taken advantage of by this company. BTW, I have saved my many emails that were sent to the company.Desired Settlement: I feel like the company's "return" policy is not real and they are taking advantage of consumers. I would like a full refund of my original purchase price (189.95) (Charged on 8/20 to my debit) and I would like a refund of 39.95 (Charged on 9/30 to my debit). To be clear, I would like to be refunded the 189.99 plus the 39.99 for a total of 229.90. I think this is only fair because it was completely impossible for me to return the product for a refund within their "window" if they fail to provide documentation about that process AND refuse to provide consumers info over the phone or return their customer's emails. Thank you very much! I really hope you can help. They seemed very unconcerned about Revdex.com involvement - possibly since they have already had so many complaints. Thanks again, [redacted]

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

This is in reference to my original complaint which was filed on 11/5/13. The complaint was closed after the business agreed to refund my money. They problem is that more than adequate time has passed for me to have received the refund IF they processed it as they promised during the week of the 7th of November. I fear that they will not follow through with the refund. I have heard nothing further regarding my promised refund from the company. Here is my original complaint: I find it difficult to list the primary nature of my complaint. My complaints are: The failure to respond to phone calls or written requests for assistance or support; a failure to honor money-back guarantees; a failure to honor a contract or agreement, and the company has processed an unauthorized bank debit. I would like the outcome promised to the Revdex.com and myself by the business (which is a refund through certified funds). I would like them to refund my 229.90. Thank you so much for your help. Review: This company appears to be a SCAM. I have been waiting over 30 days to receive a credit for the product that I never received. This company is ignoring phone calls and emails. Now that they have my money, they won't provide any customer service.Desired Settlement: Immediate credit to my credit card.

Response:

My name is [redacted]. My daughter is [redacted]. When they processed the order they used my old last name.

Review: My fifteen year-old daughter answered a phone call from University Prep Center, 4241 Jutland Dr., San Diego, CA soliciting sale of a SAT / ACT CD set to prep for the aforementioned tests. She was lead to believe that the cost was $39.95 for the set, and that they came with a money back guarantee. She placed the order with her debit card. This was in July 2013. It has just come to her and our attention that that actual cost was $499.95 for both CD's, and that UPC debited $189.95 in June 2013, and have been debiting $39.95 each month thereafter.

My daughter started to listen to one CD (she did not open the second) she found that they contained no more information than what she already had received at her high school. She then discovered the debits and amounts.

When she brought it to our attention what was going on I got the opened CD and the unopened CD and packaged them up and sent them back for a refund via US Post Office with the signature required from UPC that they received them back.

We just got the CD's back, unopened, with an 'X' as a signature indicating they were refused.

My wife called UPC 1-800 number and was told when she began asking to speak to someone in charge that the lady she was speaking to was the answering service, and she did not know when their hours of operation were, and she could not tell my wife when someone might return our phone call.

UPC is a scam. I saw on your Revdex.com site that although they are not Revdex.com listed Revdex.com gives them an 'F' for the number of complaints they have received.

Why can a scam like this continue to exist in CA?

What a rip-offDesired Settlement: UPC should take back the two CD's and refund all that they have debited from my daughter's account. She is sixteen, and is enrolled in a dual credit LVN program with her high school and local junior college, and she works part time at night. The way UPC took advantage of her is loathsome.

Response:

The customer never contacted us, and their 30 day free trial has expired. We have approved a refund for the $79.90 (2 x $39.95), and have granted your student free access moving forward. We also do not accept credit cards from minors, as the card was in Laura's name. Your refund has been processed, so please allow 3-5 business days for the refund to post to your account.

Review: I purchased SAT/ACT prep software for my son. I was told that he would have on-line access to classes that would be billed at $39.95, and that I may cancel anytime by calling customer service. I have repeatedly called to cancel the monthly services with no response. I have sent numerous e-mails, mailed letters and called over 50 times in the last two months. No one ever answers the phone, returns my calls or responds to my letters. This is clearly a scam as any reputable business would have someone answer the phone.Desired Settlement: I am requesting that they immediately stop their automatic monthly billing and refund the last two months of debits from my account.

Business

Response:

Your account has been canceled and your refund of $79.90 will be returned to your credit card. Sorry for the inconvenience, we have outsourced a new customer service team, as our internal process was in need of more help. We apologize, and wish your student well....

Review: The company offered me SAT College Preparation software with the understanding that it was being offered for a 60-day free trial. When I attempted to contact the company by phone, and via email 27 days after the purchase, no one returned my calls or emails. After hounding the company further, I have learned that I was not speaking with a representative of the company, but rather with an answering service paid to take their calls. After persistent call, faxes, emails, and letters, I received an email from the company today stating that no one gets a 60 day trial (mind you... I contacted them before 30-days were up, and have the phone and email records to prove it), and that no refund was forthcoming. No one will call me and the email was just the one sentence long.Desired Settlement: At a minimum, I would like to see a refund of the full charge for their services and instructions on how to return their software to them.

Pie in the sky... I'd like to get refunded for the cost of my long distance phone calls to you, to the San Diego PD, and for the cost of my certified letters, and parking at the post office. I doubt that those costs will be covered.

Ideally, I'd like to see that law enforcement gets involved and they are put out of business. They are clearly an organization out to make money off of the aspirations of parents who can't afford to send their kids to Kaplan classes, and they are hoping the distance and firewall of inaccessibility will force most parents to give up on getting a refund.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint in a reasonable time frame. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

1. The business was able to bill my credit card within 24-hours of their phone call to me. They should be able to process my refund in less than 6 weeks.

2. I have a written email from the company indicating that I was offered the software for a 60-day free trial window. No exception to their policies is necessary since:

2a. I have documentation from my telephone company indicating that I called the company to request a refund within 27 days.

2b. I have documentation from my Internet Service Provider indicating that I emailed the company within 27 days.

I would like an immediate refund and an apology.

Regards,

Review: I ordered the program for my son on July 24, 2013. After using the materials as instructed, actually more, and taking both the ACT and SAT again, his scores did not improve as promised. I waited until both test results were back to request the refund. The first phone call I made, 10/25/13, I actually talked to a person who told me to email a refund request. Which I promptly did. I follwed up with 3 additional emails to customer service, 10/31/13, 11/23/13, & 11/25/13. I never received a response or a credit to my card. I have also left 3 voicemails and no return calls. 11/23/13 and (2) 11/25/13. The Point Guarantee policy is stated on their website, but not the way to go about requesting a refund. I did what I was told and it has been a month since my initial request.Desired Settlement: I would like the purchase price refunded of $199.95.

Review: I purchased this product for my daughter entering college next year in December, 2012. I informed the salesman I was unsure of buying the product not knowing if my daughter would use/benefit from it. He assured me it was a risk free sale, if for any reason we didn't want the product, we could return in no questions asked within 30 days. I returned the product in January and requested a refund. I emailed asking if they received the return and did receive a reply stating they would refund in 6-8 weeks. I email again several times and finally got another response stating they were under new management and would be looking into it (that was in March). Since that time, I have emailed 5 more times requesting a refund AND I have left messages on the 800 customer service number.Desired Settlement: Please refund my account minus shipping and handling as agreed upon in the sales process.

Review: I ordered the prep materials for my son from University Prep Center on 1/25/13. I was told by the man who sold it to me [redacted] employee ID# [redacted] that I would be able to receive a refund if his ACT scores did not improve or if he wasn't happy with the materials after a trial period. Just before the 30 day trial period was expiring I called and spoke to a customer service rep as well as a manager and unfortunately was talked into extending this trial period since my son had not opened the package. He still has not opened the package and I have been trying to contact UPC via phone calls as well as email with no response. In order to return this material you must have an authorization number given to you by customer service but my calls go directly to voice mail and no one returns the calls. The trial period expires May 5, 2013 and I will have wasted $299.95. Boy am I a sucker! Please help me resolve this and also spread the word to others that this company does not honor their word. Review: The SAT Prep material was purchased over the phone in February 16,2013. My son performed the diagnostic exam. He was not interested in continued use of the product. I contacted customer service on 03/08/2013 and was told I would be contacted within 2 business days. I was not. I again contacted customer service on 03/12/2013. I was contacted by [redacted] 03/13/2013 and was issued a return number ([redacted]). I was told it could take 4-8 weeks to receive a refund check. The materials were sent back on 03/14/2013. It is now 06/28/2013 and I have not received a refund check. We did contact "[redacted]" again on 05/27/2013 and 05/28/2013 and I was told that a check should be received by 06/05/2013. It did not arrive and so I contacted "[redacted]" again and his phone number was no longer in service. I also contacted the original customer service number and it was no longer in service. I have canceled my credit card used to purchase the materials as I fear the account could be compromised. I feel we followed the terms and conditions for the product and I would like a refund as my son was not interested in the product.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund check for the cost of the materials ($385.00). Review: This product was presented over the phone. The representative did say we could have a refund within 30 days. There was never any mention of what is stated in the return policy that we had to actually try the first test; we had first just changed our mind about our purchase. When we saw we needed to at least try the product, we went ahead to do so and the disc was not supported by the computer system we have in place. Again, nothing was mentioned about needing to have any specific program in order to use the product. We have Adode products which the instructions say we need, but the disc is not legible.I have tried several times to communicate with this company; three times by phone, twice by email.I am frustrated with the lack of response so I can get the answers I need to proceed; to be able to test the product out and make a decision about the purchase. My 30 day trial period is running out and if I do not get help, I no longer have an option to return the product, which is costly. I cannot afford to lose this purchase unless I have use of it.Please help me to get through to them.Desired Settlement: I would like the help I need in order to at least test the product. There has been no response at all.I will not get a refund if I go over the 30day trial period, which is running out. This is not my fault. There was no mention of needing to have any specific program in order to take the test.We cannot open the disc.We are getting no response and I feel we have done our part in order to move forward.I personally do not like the way this business handles it's customers.

Review: I purchased the prep program from a salesperson who outright lied and told me I could return the product at any time with no questions asked. I returned the product in August, with tracking info from the USPS for proof. I had an email conversation back and forth with a customer service manager regarding refund that I was told was 3-5 days...he informed me it is 6-8 weeks. I have emailed 7 times, faxed, called and left messages, and sent an online request with this company. There is no one to talk to - you go to an answering service only. I spent $199 and returned the item. I would like my refund immediately...it is OVER the 6-8 weeks. This company is a scam, how can anyone work for someplace like this? Does no one have any moral values? Steal money from people who don't have it to begin with but just want more for their children.Desired Settlement: I would like my refund in the amount of $199 - $14.95 = $184.05 immediately. My credit card expiration has changed. I am sure you can find the details in the gazillion emails/faxes I have sent.

Review: I puchased their UPC SAT/ACT Basic Software back on 3/22/13 for $285.00 plus $14.95 shipping for a total of $299.95. I received the product and tried to load, but I had software problems becuase my home system runs on Linux and their software does not work with Linux. I worked with their Customer Service several times to rectify with downloads with no sucess. On 4/19/13 I received a RME number [redacted] to return the product back to UPC. I sent the package back them certified and received the card back from the USPS showing the package was recieved back on 4/22/13.

Per their website this is their return policy.

1.You must call our customer service department and obtain a return authorization number (RMA).

2.You MUST return all of the contents you received in your package. This includes both the Software, and Scholarship Assistance Disks, along with the color catalog, and the UPC box. The original USPS (postal) box is not necessary.

3.Your student MUST activate the program using the provided Login and Password. The student must complete the first Diagnostic exam (minimum).

4.The materials must be returned within the 30 money back guarantee period. The 30 days begins when you receive the program and return package must be postmarked within that 30 days (If you have the Trial period extended, your Educational Consultant will need to provide you with that confirmation number.).

5.All refunds will consist of the purchase price only. Your refund WILL NOT include the $14.95 cost for shipping and handling. You will also be responsible for the costs associated with the return shipping.

6. Please expect your refund in 6-8 week upon approval from customer service manager. You will receive an email directly from the accounting/customer service department once the refund is approved, as well as another email once the funds are issued. Please note any credit refunds may take up to two billing cycles to see on your statements.

7.If the above procedures are not followed the refund will be denied by the credit department.

I followed their procedures. I started to contact them back on 8/6/13 and sent an email to get an update on my refund, I left messages on 8/13/13 and 8/22/13. On 8/22/13 I received an email back from Customer Service that my refund was approved, and they would provide me with a disbursement date. Heard nothing back so I emailed again on 8/27/13 for an update. No response, emailed them again on 9/12/13. On 9/13/13 they responded stating it would be released next week. On 9/30/13 as I still had not received the refund. No response once again, so I emailed them again on 10/17/13. Still have not received my refund and have not had a response back from them either.Desired Settlement: I would like to get my refund of $285.00 back. Their customer serivce is horiffic. I would apprecaite your help in stepping in and getting this resolved for me. I have copies of emails and delivery notices if you need copies, please let me know.

Response:

The customer did not follow our return instructions, as an account was never created, nor did the student complete the 20 minute diagnostic test. The refund has been denied.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The software they provided did not work with my computer, which runs on a Linux platform, their software only works with Windows. I spoke with Customer Service on the phone and via email about this and they tried to provide me with downloads so I could get the program to load to no avail. When I spoke to customer service on 4/18/13, the provided me with a RME number [redacted] to return the product, which I did.

They state that I did not follow the instructions which I did and state that I didn't log in for 20 minutes, which I could not do becasue it wouldn't load. How would I be expected to use their product if I couldn't get it to work with my operating system. If you'd like emails from customer service with the help suggestions, please let me know and I can provide.

Review: University Prep charged me (with my permission) $199 for a SAT prep DVD (which I did receive) with a money back guarantee if your child does not get 300 point increase. My child had a 10 point increase, so I contacted them (several times) for a refund of the $199 I paid. Not only have I not heard back from them since, they then began to charge me $39.95 for I have no clue what. I have been in dispute with them since early November with my credit card company, Bank of America.Desired Settlement: I would like my $199 back, but I really just want them to stop charging my credit card.

I'd like to inform/warn other consumers that this company is a scam.

Response:

We are no longer in business, but will be happy to refund your credit card unless you have already disputed the charges. We will have to deal with your card company moving forward, but will make sure you are refunded either way.

Review: ACT prep software was purchased for $299.95 using my mastercard on 11-01-12. At the time of purchase, I was informed that if my child's ACT scores did not improve by five points, the purchase amount would be fully refunded. My daughter used the software as directed. My daughter's score did not improve but dropped one point. Again, we contacted the company to get more ideas on how to more thoroughly use the software to better prepare for the ACT test. The ACT test was taken again and the grade again stayed at one point lower than before using the software. I contacted University Prep Center and was directed to return the software to them. The software was returned to them on 05-24-13. I contacted them again inquiring of reimbursement. They confirmed that the software had been received but I would have to fax them the copies of my daughter's ACT scores to verify that her score had not improved. This was completed and again I contacted them inquiring of reimbursement. I was told on 08-21-13 that they were waiting for approval of refund. I have attempted to contact University Prep Center numerous times by phone and email with no response. I am told by the answering service that an urgent message will be left for the representatives to contact me. I have not received any response. I would like for this company to honor their guarantee and make a refund.Desired Settlement: University Prep Center to refund the purchase amount of $299.95 that they had agreed to do.

Response:

Sorry for the delay, your refund has been issued, and will arrive within 5-7 business days.

Review: A salesman called to sell a college prep course. I was told I would recieve a cd for act test taking and practice. online grading, suport and 24 hour assistance for question. I was told they would connect us with scholarships that fit us, so we could apply for them, we could view virtual colleges and they would grade our essays for act test. I ask if this was all included in the 189.95 and he said yes. When I recieved the package, it said I would have a 30 day trail on support. This was not ever implied over the phone. When I tried to call the number in the book for questions 1-866-343-6754. , I either got a busy signal or voicemail. I then tried the other number in the book 1-800-560-8117 and got voicemail, then I called number on website prepme4less.com. It's not a working number. Then I tried 619-260-12-6 and only recieved voicemail. I have tried all hours everyday. I cannot get a person. I have not open cd and now I'm unwilling to. I fear they will want a credit card number for free 30-day trail. I'm not losing anymore money. I was told there was customer support and a 30 day return policy. I just want to return this, but the return policy in book they sent states I need rma number to send back the product. I cannot get any respone I have left 4 messages with address, phone number and e-mail asking for rma. I fear they will not refund my money and I will not be able to return within the 30 day, because they will not respone. Their salesman was misleading and it false advertising, I just want my money back.Desired Settlement: At this point I want to return product and recieve full refund of 189.95 on my credit card. I was mislead. I wish you would shut them down.

At this point, I was not asking upc to answer any questions regarding their products, I was asking for an rma, so I could return their product. Two days after I received their product, I was calling to ask questions, because their brochure was indicating different information than I was told by their phone salesman. I could not receive any response from any of their phone numbers, all I received were voicemails. When I left messages, there was no feedback or response. At that point my frustration level was very high. I decided to return the product and have repeatly in the last 3 1/2 weeks been requesting an rma, by leaving voice messages and e-mails with phone number [redacted] e-mail [redacted].net and mailing address.[redacted]. troy mo. 63379. all of this was left at various voicemails, there has been no response. Your e-mail that says customer service is spelled wrong. At all times day and night no one answers your phones at any of these numbers: 1-877-287-3036, 619-260-1206, 1-877-287-3036, 1-800-560-8117.I have tried to follow your rules for return with no results. I want a full refund issued to my credit card for 189.95 and the rma to return your product. As for as I am concerned your company is a scam. I have tried to return the product by your rules within the 30 days, you have not allowed me the ability to do so.

Review: We got the Prep Material and returned in a couple days after we got it. We did not get refund ($299.95)and UPC kept telling they would, promising for 3 months the check "was on the way". Policy of bank for dispute is that we should be filed within 60 days. UPC does not even answer the phone. We want our money back.Desired Settlement: UPC, Return our money as you promised.
