Review: I consulted with Theo DesignBuild for 5 tasks of home repair work, and ended up signing a contract for work which was supposed to take days. During the work Theo presented options for different ways to proceed, with no indication of increased scope or cost of work. Later a bill was presented for increased cost, with in some cases hundreds of percent cost overrun on a task. When I asked for clarification on the reasons for the increase, Theo stopped all work, and threatened to quit the job with parts of the house in various states of disrepair if I did not agree to the increased costs. It felt very much like extortion to have me agree to his terms.Of the five tasks the most egregious was a task to repair some water damage, fix the cause of the damage, and remove the mold that had developed. The tasks was very specifically spelled out. Instead of doing any of what was agreed, Theo simply covered the area with a piece of plywood, claimed that was all he agreed to, and refused to do any other work.One task called for replacement of a damaged fascia board. Instead of replacing the board, it was instead covered with several small pieces of boards which were caulked together. Another contractor that was eventually called to fix the problem commented how sub-standard the work by Theo was.In one task some structural work was required to replace a water damaged area of 2 posts on a front porch. Instead of the high quality wood that was specified, Theo cut a couple of pieces from a planter we had outside (without our permission and damaging the planter), using 15 year old wood as structural support for the porch.One task was done with a substantial design flaw and omission in how the work was performed.One task was not done at all, as it was addressed a different way (not by Theo).In the end, weeks after we started, I said I believed the work was not done as specified. Theo threatened that if I did not pay the full contract cost he would use all legal means at his disposal.Desired Settlement: In a separate document I have much more detail than fits in this form. In that document there is a detailed breakdown of the costs of the contract and each task, the amount I paid to Theo, and the value (or harm) he did and how much I ultimately had to pay to fix the problems that Theo either caused or didn't fix.That document spells out a $1,650 refund that would compensate for work that was not done or my expenses to do the job right.
