I purchased a home from Randy Dostal in 2008 and was pleased. When I decided to have him build me another home I expected to be pleased. I have turned out to be VERY displeased.
It was all going okay until after the build was completed and I closed on the loan. THEN, I found out there were multiple bills that were never sent to me after OVER 90 days later! Needless to say this put me in a very bad position. The contractors still have to be paid but the loan is closed. I got confirmation in writing that there were no more bills at completion and prior to closing on the loan. He misinformed me and one of the bills he NEVER sent to me, I had to get it from the contractor... After all this happened Randy Dostal refused to take responsibility for the mistakes or give any type of refund for the fee paid for building the house. Randy Dostal flat out made mistakes and does not care about correcting them.
I asked for a small percentage of the fee paid as a refund due to him not doing what he was paid to do. He refused and does not seem to care about satisfaction.

Refund I would like a small partial refund of the fees he was paid to build my house. There was a failure to do the duties I paid for and it resulted in me being put in a very bad situation at the fault of the builder.
Interesting. I have only had 3 of these in 30 years. There is ALWAYS another side. I did not want to pay $500 so I get trashed on this site? I felt extorted. I did not need a "Story Daniels" event concerning this.
The rest of the story:
*** was the General Contractor. I was the CONSULTANT. I paid no bills, wrote no checks and simply filled in a budget ledger. It is ***'S house - he was the GENERAL CONTRACTOR. For "both" these reasons you would think a rational person would do a full accounting. *** received his binder with all bills that were sent to me. No other builder wanted to travel to Elberon, Iowa. No other builder could/would meet ***'s budget of $165,000 for a NEW house to be built. *** had the freedom to use ANY subs and suppliers. He received the "luxury" of getting Thomas Dostal Developers prices AND the quality of the work expected from the company's subs. *** is the GENERAL CONTRACTOR. He stayed on budget and was $7000.00 UNDER budget. The insulation bill was NOT over. I had received a partial statement and recorded it in the ledger. My assistant filed it before I could send it. *** was not over budget if HE was doing the job of a general he would have seen the bill was not paid nor accounted for. The insulation company did not send the 3rd bill. Again *** was NOT over budget. *** owed the last $1300 of his insulation bill. I wish he would write how I paid (out of my pocket) a bill the bank never paid off of a draw request. *** lives in a beautiful house made possible by ..................ME.

This is very simple. A fee was paid for Thomas Dostal Dev. to do a job, that job was not done completely. Their response says. "extortion" but as of today they agreed to the requested refund BUT only if I would sign a release that would release them from EVERYTHING and ANYTHING unrelated to the issue at hand as well. Obviously, this is only in their best interest, NOT mine. This is basically them buying my silence on any past/future issues of any kind that could possibly arise. Including some pending repair issues on items their contractors broke and are still incomplete.
He speaks of the budget so much, but that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. He was paid to perform many tasks and one of those tasks was sending me the bills to pay, they failed to do that on 2 of them.
His statements of no other builder would do this or do that is untrue. I chose to have Randy build my house because of the good experience I had with him previously, in fact his fee was higher than anyone else. But was able to to meet my budget, there was unfortunately just a mistake made that we have yet to come to an agreement on.
I hope he will come to a fair agreement and I will be able to update this with a satisfactory conclusion.
