Review: My daughter is a first year SBCC student who lives at a dorm in Goleta. Early Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, she was parked at her dorm in her roommates parking spot, as her roommate was out of town for the weekend. She had her roommate's permission to park in her assigned parking spot. Thomas Towing was not called by anyone at the dorm but must have been having a slow morning, so they trolled the dorm parking lot for students' cars without parking decals. They say they are allowed to do this type of predatory towing because they have permission from the dorm and a sign saying such is posted. My daughter called me in tears when she awoke telling me the towing company told her it would be $450 to get her car back! I would understand if my daughter had parked in someone's assigned spot and kept them from parking there or if she did not have permission to be in the spot. However, as I said, she had authorization to be in the spot from the girl who rented the spot for the year for $1200.00! Nobody from the dorm called a tow truck to remove my daughter's car from the spot. Thomas Towing was simply predatory towing to collect large fees from poor college students. I think they are despicable and this practice should be illegal.I drove to Goleta from Los Angeles to help my daughter get her car back and the tow truck driver we met at the shop, Santiago, was very rude and could have cared less about charging us this ridiculously inflated fee. He did offer to take $100 off the bill and charge me $350 instead of $450 because he said he was trying to be nice. I said that is not what I call nice and told him I would pursue the matter in small claims court. He then said that he was not going to take the $100 off, in that case. In other words, he would have charged me $100 less if I agreed to not take Thomas Towing to small claims court. I have not yet filed, but plan to if my complaint is not resolved to my satisfaction. By this, I mean a complete refund of my money.Desired Settlement: I would like Thomas Towing to give me a complete refund for towing my daughter's car. I ended up being charged $405 for the half day tow. I believe the type of predatory towing practices of this company, meaning their trolling college dorm parking lots, without being called, is the very definition of Highway Robbery, as are their abhorrent fees!

Review: On January 10th afternoon, I parked my car on the street at around [redacted] Segovia road in Goleta and it was legal to park there at the time. Later on I came back to my car at night, it was gone. At first, I frightened and thought it was stolen. Then I walked around and found two "No Parking sign" lying on the floor flat surfaced between the area I was parked. I found a number and called the towing company to check if my car was towed and they said it would cost around $400 to pick up my car. It is a very rare practice to tow a car on the street without giving a ticket even if it was illegally parked. Many have complained about this towing company for its predatory towing practices. They said they are allowed to do this type of predatory towing because they have permission from the university and a sign saying such is posted. Thomas Towing is simply robbing consumers and charging them inflated prices to release their car. It ended up costing me $540 to release my car after they add ridiculously inflated fee to it. I was forced to pay such an amount since I do not know where to file a complaint or seek legal action against them. So I decided to pay and get my car back first before I research to seek complaint or legal action against this type of robbery.Desired Settlement: I would like Thomas Towing to provide me a complete refund for towing my car. I was charged $540 total. Also, I would like regulatory officials to warn this company about its predatory towing practices. Thank You.

Review: On Friday, March 22, 2014, my 2004 Hyundai sedan was towed from [redacted] Del Playa Dr. #1. I was told that because I am not the owner of the car (my parents' names are on the registration) I would need to get a faxed letter releasing the car to me sent to Thomas Towing from my father. At Thomas Towing I explained to the receptionist my parents were on vacation on a cruise ship and had no access to a fax machine. My father then phoned the receptionist and explained the situation; there was no fax machine. However, he would be happy to sent an email which would release the vehicle. Thomas Towing said they would only accept a fax, not a scanned email. Thus, my father emailed the document to me, and I then faxed it to Thomas Towing. The receptionist confirmed that they received the faxed document, but she couldn't tell me if their policy would allow them to release the car to me. She spoke with someone else about the situation, and then I was told that this document was unacceptable because it didn't come from directly my father who was at sea of the coast of Louisiana; it was faxed via Isla Vista. I was told I would have to wait until tomorrow to pick up the car. I returned on Saturday, March 22nd (at 10 am) because my father would have access to a fax in Louisiana. The fax machine would not properly work, but the attendant (Santiago) told me if my father emailed the release that would be satisfactory, even though this was not the case before. My father then emailed the document, and the car was released to me Saturday, March 23rd. To get my car I was forced to pay $425.Thomas Towing made me wait 24 hours to pick up the car on the weekend, an additional 80$, charging me the extra $115 weekend fee. They refused to release the car when they had the necessary document for its release, and they thus inflated the charges I was forced to pay. Ultimately, they accepted the email document my parents had sent, and finally released the car, but not until after they added and padded the fees for its release.Desired Settlement: Refund for storage and weekend charges.$80 + $115 = $195Reason: Thomas Towing had the Release Document within hours of the car being towed, but they refused to release the car at that time. THerefore the additional charges were fraudulently claimed and I was forced to pay in order to have my car released the next day, which was a weekend, incurring another extra charge.
