My wife and I came into the office sometime in early-to-mid December 2016 to look into some comprehensive dental work that was needed for her. At the time of the visit it was noted that Dr. Tillery was not in the network of our insurance. However, in order to retain her as a customer, it was communicated from the business manager at the office that the difference in being in-network and outside of the network would be "nominal". It was also communicated that in order to take advantage of a special discount that the payment was needed to be made that day, which we took advantage of.
My wife had came in for the procedure later in that month, and was generally satisfied with the service. However, we learned via a bill later on that the difference was not "nominal", as it required us to pay $267. As the procedure costed over $2,000, we did not view the extra $267 as a nominal amount. We had attempted to contact the office a couple of times and discuss the matter and dissatisfaction, and there were issues with timing for authorizing the office to speak with me. Just today I was called by the business manager that we needed to pay or it would go to collection. As I did not want it to go to collection, I begrudgingly decided to pay the amount.
That response is unsatisfactory, because what was communicated verbally was contrary to the documentation provided in an effort to obtain a customer. In addition, what was to be later paid out-of-pocket after the insurance claim should have received the same 20% discount as was granted at the time of out-of-pocket payment during the initial consultation. There is no rationale for why the initial out-of-pocket was granted this discount while the later out-of-pocket payment was not.
