Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2017/03/20) */
RE: Case # XXXXXXXX : *** ***
To Whom It May Concern:
I am *** ***, owner and director of The Learning Center Preschool in Highland, IndianaI am a graduate of Indiana University and hold a Bachelors and Masters degree in
EducationThe Learning Center has been in operation for yearsThere are staff membersThis letter is written as a response to the letter *** *** wrote to the Revdex.com
Let me begin by stating that we are a preschool, not a daycareOur children attend classes 2, 3, or days a week, for hoursWe have morning and afternoon classes, are closed for holidays, most of the summer and follow local school systems calendarsA snack is providedChildren in our program are ages years — years oldDaycare programs are typically year round with extended hours that are convenient for parents who work full timeThey usually accommodate infants through school age children and serve breakfast and lunch, if needed
Mrs***'s son began attending TLC in September, He adjusted well, was a quiet, very smart boy, who was very happy in our environmentHe was certainly not a child that needed discipline, spoke inappropriately or was mean to othersWe observed his playing with friends and not being involved in any negative behavior or conflict with others, When his mother suggested that her child had been hit more than once by the same boy, though quite surprised, we immediately separated them from free play activities, as we would do for any other child(Her son never mentioned being hit to any of our six (6) staff persons.) We have excellent supervision and did not see or hear of any hitting going onChildren are pretty honest beings and love to tattle tale on others, so if they observed hitting, someone would have told the teacherWe did not think this was an issue between these two boysAs far as unfinished work corning home_this, absolutely, does not happen on a regular basisIf we run out of time, and we feel the skill presented in an activity is known by the child, we will send the unfinished work home, to, hopefully, be completed with parentsEarly in the year, we shared that the school and the parents need to be cooperative partners in working with the children on academic skills
From September through January, we worked to review the readiness skills and refine all skills that her son knewWe developed his fine motor ability and introduced new skills and concepts, At the parent teacher conference in January, 2017, there was continuous discussion of (pretend) gun play at TLC and unacceptable behavior from her son, at their home, which she blamed TLC and its students forShe was told by the staff that there was not gun play allowed at school and we have not observed negative or unacceptable behaviorI did not contact her,
as there wee nothing more I had to sayThe staff shared all of our feelings at her conferenceShe continued to wait for an update from me....there was nothing to update!!
Her son was not exposed to gun play and/or unacceptable behavior as a result of his attendance in our hour dayGun play is not and, has never been, a problem at The Learning Center3oys at one point or another, in their development, pretend play with guns, whether they are constructed from blocks, nerf, or the likeThis type of play, on occasion, most do at homeWe, however, always discourage any child from making pretend guns, or any type of weapon, out of blacks or other construction toys, while in free playThis has always been our policyWith that said, our students know creating guns or weapons is unacceptable play in school and it is very rare that they break that ruleIt has NEVER been an issue in the years TLC has been in existenceWe have had hundreds of children attend our schoolMrs*** is the only parent that has shown continued fear and worry over pretend gun playI do understand that her husband is an avid hunterGuns are in their home and their son is aware of thatPerhaps he is a little more interested in guns because he knows his father hunts and uses gunsEven if they do not speak about these, the interest is sparked in a child's mind instantly, at that first conversation, which I am sure they have had with their son
I would like to, once again, address behaviorTheir son was exposed to a variety of children, as he will continue to be in any school settingWhat these children learn in their homes and share with their peers, as children will do, we are unable to totally controlWe discourage inappropriate conversation we observe and are told about, by other childrenOur staff never pointed to parenting, as what goes on in our family's homes is not for us to judgeThis young boy will benefit from exposure to all types of children and experiences which will only help him to grow and mature, as he learns to deal with what he will continue to be exposed toThis is where love, guidance, understanding and advice from his parents is so very important
After the conference, I attempted to have Mrs*** step into the school to discuss what had transpired and to address her concernsShe was unable to do soAt the end of the day, she assumed I would then be available and unfortunately, my day had ended and I had a previous commitmentShe left with an extremely rude and unacceptable comment to the staff at the door, which was,"Oh we can meet when it's convenient for her, but not for me"Then said, "I'm done, come on, (called her son by name)", She took her son and leftI would like her to know that as she travels through his educational journey and meets several new teachers, some who she will love, others who she will not like at all, that parent teacher conferences will be agreed upon with the consent and availability of both parent and educatorComments by a parent, such as what she made to my staff, will always be frowned upon by most in an educational setting
After her negative feellegs and departure on February 1**, I was very surprised to see her son return to school on February 2nd, but learned, from her letter to the Revdex.com, that she had a doctor's appointment and also wanted him to say goodbyeIt was on his return, that her son told us he was going to a new school where there was a gymMrs*** shared no information with the staff
I felt the comment made by the staff person, when her son left that day, was very positive, as we do hope Mrs*** found the school that would give her all that she was looking forit is very unfortunate that we were unable to rectify or accommodate her needs
and concerns at The Learning CenterOur program is one of the very best developmental programs in the area and I am sorry that her son will no longer be a part of thatDuring his months of attendance, we did provide him with an excellent level of skill activitiesThe staff at The Learning Center all wish Mrs*** and her family well and hope she found a better fit for her family, especially for her son
