Disputes dept:

All I wanted was to have my car battery tested. Felt like it was a little slow turning over. Car was running just fine. The mechanic says I need a battery. Its 125 dollars. I said too much and wanted to leave. I get to the car and 2 mechanics are confused as the car is totally dead, not starting. I say whats wrong they don’t answer. Then he says maybe starter or battery or something else.

I say you killed the car why? Again they are not sure..a misdiagnosis from the start. I say I want my car like it was when I arrived..starting and running. They say it’s the starter,,,I then say just fix my car. As the mechanic is working, car now running hood up him in front of it, me behind the car, the car moves forward. I jump into my car to stop it and shut it off. The car crashes into a metal tool box and now there are scratches on the front and sides of the car.

I try to talk with the [redacted] I believe his name is, he blames it on my ignition system. I said the car cannot move forward when in park and the car cannot be started when in drive as I tested these out immediately. The [redacted] just walked away from me, would not hear me at all.

I then write a letter to him the next day and dropped it off at the shop,,,,still no word from him.

The problem was misdiagnosed from the start. I did not want a new battery or a new starter,,,,I only wanted to have the battery tested and when he said 125 dollars I was ready to leave.

The shop caused scratches to my car due the mechanics fault.

I did not want these services but was forced to comply once the shop disabled my car. Remember..the car was running the engine starting before I arrived at the shop to just have the battery tested.Desired Settlement: the business should give me a refund. I did not want the starter put into my car only my battery tested. they caused scratches to my car as well.

Response:

CUSTOMER CAME IN ON A SATURDAY AROUND 3:30PM (SHOP CLOSES AT 4PM ON STAURDAYS) AND ASKED ONE OF MY MECHANICS TO TEST HIS BATTERY ON HIS VEHICLE. SO WE PULLED THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP AND TURNED OFF VEHICLE TO TEST AND SEE IF THE BATTERY WAS THE REASON WHY THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WE FOUND THAT THE BATTERY TESTED OK AND THEN THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN. WHEN TURNING THE KEY WE HEARD A CLICKING AND THEN IT WOULD STOP. WE DIAGNOISED THE PROBLEM AS BEING THE STARTER NOT THE BATTERY, THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT START WITHOUT CHANGING THE STARTER. WE EXPLAINED THIS TO JOHN AND AGREED TO GET THE WORK DONE. IF HE FELT THAT HE DIDNT WANT TO GET THE STARTER DONE WE COULD HAVE SIMPLY PUSHED HIS VEHICLE OUT OF THE SHOP AND LEFT IT IN THE PARKING LOT AND HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN IT TOWED AWAY. BUT THATS NOT HOW WE RUN OUR BUSINESS WE TRY TO HELP OUT AS MUCH AS WE CAN WITHOUT OVERCHARGING OUR CUSTOMERS OR SENDING THEM AWAY.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

[Your Answer Here]I pulled into the auto shop wanting only my battery tested. My car had been starting and running but I wanted to test the battery strength. The car was outside of the shop when tested by one mechanic using a portable device. He advised that the battery was weak and that I needed a new one. I went into the shop and spoke to the [redacted]'s son. He advised the cost of $125. I mentioned that I couldn't afford that. I then asked him if I bought my own battery elsewhere, how much would he charge to put it in. He advised $20. I said thank you and walked outside to my car. When I arrived at my car, it was off and could not be started. The mechanic did something to my car to render it unstartable.

The car should not have been put in this position where I was either forced to receive service or get the car towed. Testing a battery does not render a car unstartable. I was ready to drive away at that point. I told the mechanics(2) at this time, to fix what they caused. then, my car was pulled into the shop and a starter was put into the car. While working on my car, the mechanic must have left the car in drive as it lunged forward, hit a tool box and caused scratches. I attempted to talk to the [redacted] about this but he walked away in disgust not caring to listen to me whatsoever.

A simple battery strength test was all I wanted. My car was disabled by a mechanic. I needed my car to be functional so I told the shop to fix their error. I did try to speak with the [redacted] before the starter was put in. I told him both the starter and the battery cannot be dead at the same time. His attitude was one in which he did not care to get involved.

In the end, I spent money on a new starter when all I asked for and expected was a battery test..and not for my car to be unable to start with scratches as well.
