Tommys Towing Car & Truck Reviews (3)

Review: Tommy's tow charged me 520 dollars which was the third price they gave me for towing my car one half mile wouldn't let me see my car or my bill before I played it. I came Saturday morning to get my car that was towed Friday night And they wouldn't release it so they could charge an extra day, when I finally saw my car after I payed the bill and it had way more damage than it did so I asked for driver of truck and insurance information the [redacted] refused to give it to me and told me to " [redacted]" andso I called the cops and made a report that there was extra damage with them before I took the car which onlynneededna tire change to take, after talking to a former employee who quit because of not getting payed explained that most of his trucks do not have insurance and has been towingntrucks without insurance for a long time, so he forced me to pay an unreasonable amount of money, kept my car so I couldn't get it and would have to pay more, put more Damages on my car and wouldn't give me any insurance info( because he had none) and told me incouldntnsee what I was paying or see the condition of my car before I payedDesired Settlement: I want him to be fined for towing cars without insurance, and for this [redacted] to stop screwing people out of their money ( I am not the first one) I hope to have price reduction and compensation for damages

Review: On 5-**-2013 our truck had a mechanical problem along interstate 84, NY. Our vehicle was on the shoulder of the exit ramp for route 17. We subsequently required a tow truck to hoist our trailer. We contacted Orange County Towing and we were quoted a price between $500-$1500 to perform the services needed. While Orange County Towing was en route the NY State Police stopped and informed us we were required to use a towing company on their list of providers. The State Police then called and ordered services from US Recovery Inc., D.B.A. [redacted]s Towing which has an "F" rating with the Revdex.com. This was not an accident recovery, it was a routine service call. Our bill was inflated with services and equipment we did not order or require. We were forced to pay $9,327.80 by an "F" rated provider when we were quoted between $500-$1500 for the services we required.Desired Settlement: Refund in the amount of $5042.84.

Response:

Dear Mediator:

Our office is forwarding this reply on behalf of US Recovery Inc. regarding the complaint filed by

[redacted] Leasing to your office. I wish to inform you that I have been representing towing companies for more

than forty years; in the past owned a towing company; and have an extensive knowledge of towing equipment

of all sizes and their capabilities.

In reading the complaint, the trucking company states they called "Orange County Towing" yet I can

find no listing for such towing company in Orange County, NY. The tractor-trailer in question was driving

along Interstate 84 when the driver decided to stop on the shoulder of the highway. He attempted to unhook

the trailer so he might possibly fix somethi ng and in so doing the trailer slipped off the shoulder of the roadway.

This employee of [redacted] Leasing was either totally inexperienced, or was completely negligent in his handling

of the situation involving his rig.

Who the tractor-trailer driver or company specifically contacted is largely immaterial, as Interstate 84 is controlled

by the New York State Police, who have a list of "authorized towers" who have met mandated criteria in experience,

knowledge, equipment and staff so that the State Police know they can do the job. Further, that they can do the job

correctly so that the highway can be cleared and not be closed causing traffic bottlenecks and secondary accidents.

The complaint states that the State Police correctly informed [redacted] Leasing's driver that only an "authorized tower"

was allowed to work on the highway, and then the NYS Police contacted [redacted]'s Towing to respond. From my reading

of the complaint no other towing company every arrived on the scene.

It is very simple for someone to quote a ridiculously low price over the telephone, without ever coming to the scene,

walking around the disablement, and then making a determination as to what equipment and staff would be required to

do a proper recovery and towing operation. I have contacted no less than four other large heavy-duty towing companies

based in downstate New York and they laughed when I explained the job and stated that [redacted] Leasing wanted to

pay less than $ 1,500. Each of those company owners, as well as myself would be wi lling to testify

as to the accuracy of the towing bill

rendered.

[redacted]'s Towing, upon receiving the dispatch from the New York State Police, and being told what the on-scene situation

was, dispatched from their facility a 60-ton Rotator and a 50-ton Heavy-Duty Wrecker. This equipment was dispatched

because it was determined by the expert staff at [redacted]'s Towing that this equipment would be required

to properly perform the job and because the State Police do not allow tying up a highway by bringing equipment to the

scene in a piece-meal fashion. On what basis does [redacted] of [redacted] Leasing hold himself out as an expert on

towing and recovery? Has he a license to operate towing equipment? Has he taken specialized training in the handling of

tractor-trailer disablement and recoveries? I expect not!

When the New York State Police dispatch an "authorized towing provider" the tractor-trailer driver or his company do not either

"order" or determine what is "required". That is a task accomplished by either or both the State Police anad the experienced

towing company that responds. The bill rendered was not "inflated" as all of the services rendered and equipment charged

for were necessary for a safe and damage free recovery.

PAGE 2:

I hope you are aware that a 60 ton rotator is a highly specialized piece of equipment that costs new somewhere between

$600,000 and $650,000. The equipment was used on scene to perform the delicate task of picking the trailer up off the right

side tandems. of the tractor and setting it back onto the shoulder of the roadway. The 60-ton rotator operates like a crane

and was used so that the trailer did not tip over resulting in the possible loss of its cargo; damage to the trailer; and possible

environmental damage to the land adjacent to the highway. This recovery was done in an exemplary fashion with no damage at all.

[redacted]'s Towing charged their standard rates for the equipment used portal to portal. If [redacted] Leasing's tractor-trailer had only

a "mechanical problem" no tow trucks would have been needed. If this was a "routine service call" the State Police would not have

had [redacted]'s Towing respond with the equipment that was used. [redacted]'s Towing rendered a bill for their services and that bill was paid.

In the hope of resolving this matter and ending it, [redacted]'s Towing issued a refund to [redacted] Leasing. However, we have advised

them to cancel that refund check as no General Release was forwarded to them. What they did was simply a business

decision even though the company did everything correctly. Reviewing this job after hearing all of the details from the operators of

the equipment who were on scene, as well as from their supervisor, it is my professional opinion [redacted]'s Towing did nothing wrong.

We welcome the assistance of your office and have responded quickly to your inquiry. If at any time you need any expert input on a

towing situation please feel free to contact our office.

Review: The reason for this complaint is that on the day of 09/**/2013 there was an accident which resulted in a tow to this particular company of Tommy's Towing. The tow was arranged with the police at the scene. When I went to pay for the tow and pick up my belongings I was advised that the fee would be $1500.00. Not having that amount of money they then said they would accept $500.00 and the title to the totaled car. Myself still not willing to pay that amount because they will be selling my car for parts and easily making the $1500.00. I asked if I could retrieve an item from the car. This is where they declined to let me. After going back and forth they then said that if I give them my policy information they would try and get the money from my insurance company. Even though I and my insurance made it clear that I was not covered. I felt very threatened and taken advantage of. Also knowing that I did not have coverage and knowing my situation, my insurance advised me to go to the police department and explain my situation. After going to the police department they unfortunately could not do anything about the fee, of course. But they did tell me that this company is known for taking advantage and ripping people off and they contacted another tow company and never have the charged so much for a tow. Also, advised me to contact you the Revdex.com about this matter. I just want some type of justice because I feel very taken advantage of and threatened ,also that I was ripped off and that they made out with my $400.00 that they finally forced me to pay and the title for my car. Thank you so much for taking my complaint.Desired Settlement: I want my $400.00 back because they originally asked for $1500.00 and now they have my money and they have my car which is worth the $1500.00 when sold for the parts.
