Was in need of asap repair to my [redacted] irrigation control unit for my lawn. Got a hold of these guys on a Saturday and to their credit they were the only ones I spoke with who were able to come out early Monday morning. They (owner and his son) arrived Monday a.m. promptly, quickly diagnosed the problem as a bad motherboard and within 20-30 minutes of their arrival had replaced it and had the system up and running. I have no complaint whatsoever with their knowledge and expertise.
After that, I asked him to look at an issue I was having with my landscape lighting. He spent 10-15 minutes diagnosing the problem, but because I was headed out of town I had to defer the work to a later time.
Next step: The bill. They spent 45 minutes at my house and proceeded to give me a bill for $150. I was shocked and asked him why so much. He said "because you got two of us"; meaning he and his son who basically just walked around with us. It was a one man job, there was no need for a 2nd person and certainly no need to pay for one.
I told him I was pretty sure that a brand new unit of the exact same type was $115; "no", he said; "they're over $250". That is of course a complete lie.

So after they left I started doing a slow burn. Basically I just paid $150 to fix something that I could have bought for less than $100. I called him up to discuss it and he couldn't have cared less; "Those are my prices", and of course "You got two of us". Had he brought along his favorite stuffed animal, would I have been charged for a 3rd person? Because that's how helpful his son was. (His sone is not a bad kid; there was just nothing for him to do on this job)
Here is the best part though: His wife denied he ever told me a new unit was over $250, and of course called me a liar on Yelp. They also claimed I texted them 13 times before speaking with them. In actuality, I texted them ONCE.
Heh heh ... well guess what? Turns out my phone, which I had in my shirt pocket had pocket dialed my wife by accident (probably when I leaned down to pick something up), it went to her voice mail and the whole conversation was recorded.
In conclusion:
- Everything I've written here is 100% factual
- [redacted] from Top Job is knowledgeable
- [redacted] does good work
- [redacted] was responsive and on time
- [redacted] lied to me about the price of a new unit
- In my opinion, [redacted] cheated me out of $50 or so, as the service call should have cost no more than $100. MAX.
Bad move by [redacted]. We're preparing the house for sale, have several other landscaping projects that are right up their alley and had he dealt fairly with me, I'd probably have been inclined to use them without going to bid. Now, I wouldn't let them blow leaves.
