Totin Too Roofing Reviews (%countItem)

The company performed slate roof repairs on our home in the late summer of 2018. Following extensive repairs, we noted that the roof had developed several leaks the following spring. We made contact with Jason the owner who stopped by and reported to us that he was on a "big job" and upon completion, he would complete the repairs. Later he mailed a moisture meter to "identify the leak" and stated that he would again stop by when time permitted. I sent and received several text messages attempting to prompt him to affect the repairs, but the year lapsed with no affect and with ongoing water damage to ceilings and wall in multiple rooms. I made several phone calls and left messages as well as sent multiple emails to which only a single response was returned stating that he would not perform the repairs. The lack of quality workmanship has resulted in expensive plaster and paint repair to the walls and ceilings. I would advise all who would consider the services of this company to be aware that it is interested only in the big money project and does not stand behind the work performed. The company is not responsive and the workmanship is inferior, not meeting industry standards

Totin Too Roofing Response • Mar 13, 2020

March 13, 2020***
***In response to complaint ID #*** In the summer of 2018 Totin Too,
LLC was contacted by the previous owner, at the present time they were selling
their residence, at ***. We inspected the home and wrote up a report,
quoting various items that needed repaired and a few different options of how
to go about fixing them.Upon receiving our report the
seller of the home chose to complete specific items, not everything that we
quoted, and chose how they wanted the repairs handled. We were contracted to complete the repairs in
the late summer of 2018 by the seller of the home. The home has a very old slate roof on it, at
the time of inspection we noted several slates that needed
repair/replacing. We replaced what we
were contracted to do at that point in time, amongst a few various items. Unfortunately, with a slate roof of that age
and condition the slate are much more brittle now than they would be if the
roof were newer. A roof in this stage of
its life needs consistent maintenance, or replacing. In the fall of 2018 we were contacted
by the new owners of the property at ***. We told them that we could come
and inspect the roof again, but upon reaching out to them we got no response on
several occasions. After several months
we decided to go to their house while out inspecting other homes in the area,
hoping to speak with the homeowners. While inspecting the roof another contractor that the *** asked to
come and inspect their home showed up at the house, causing a scene and
reacting with hostility to the employees of Totin Too, LLC. This immediately made us feel uncomfortable
with proceeding, but we attempted to help them regardless.Upon our second inspection of
the home, after the *** purchased the property, we noted that the leaking
that they were experiencing came from a window or window sill that needed
replacing/ repaired. This is not
typically work that we do, but we offered to assist them the best that we
could. In February of 2019 the ***
were sent a moisture meter and asked to notate the levels of moisture. The moisture meter was sent via amazon prime
and was to arrive directly at their residence in two days-time. The *** never reached out
to us with the information we asked of them. After a months of hearing nothing we reached out to them to make sure
that they received the moisture meter and were noting the necessary information. We attempted to schedule to come out but did
not due to the weather. At this point we
did not hear back from the *** and assumed that they had moved on.We did not hear from the
*** until the beginning of 2020 with complaints that their leaks had
persisted. At that point in time Totin Too, LLC had moved away from work like
that. The *** were notified of the
change that the company decided to make. Shortly after the *** were notified of that change they reached out
to the Revdex.com to file a complaint. As a company, we reserve the
right to turn down work as we see fit. Considering the past history with *** and difficulty in contacting
them, as well as the fact that this company no longer handles work of this nature,
we maintain the right to turn down the work at this residence. We received and reviewed the
complaint from the Revdex.com on March 10, 2020. Upon reviewing the direct complaint we would
like to note several discrepancies with in the complaint: 1. The complainant has written the complaint as if they were the homeowner at the time that we were hired to complete repairs on the residence, they were not, nor were they ever customers of Totin Too, LLC.They did not sign a contract with Totin Too, LLC, nor did they have to pay for any repairs made by Totin Too, LLC.The complainant references that it was their home in the late summer of 2018.The current owner had not purchased the home yet, the home was still owned by the previous owners.

2. The complainant references “extensive repairs” made by Totin Too, LLC.The complainant has no reference as to what repairs were made or what repairs were suggested, as they were not in a contract with Totin Too, LLC.Only the previous owners, who were selling the residence at ***, were customers of Totin Too, LLC.

3. The homeowner references multiple phone calls, text messages, and emails that were sent to Totin Too, LLC throughout a large span of time. The homeowner does not reference the difficulties in attempting to reach them and does not assume responsibility for their inability to respond to Totin Too, LLC. Totin Too, LLC did not begin receiving correspondence from the *** again until the beginning of 2020.

The complaining party is not in privity of contract with Totin Too. Totin Too's contract is with a third-party (the seller). As they are not a party to this complaint, we feel uncomfortable releasing a copy of the contract to the Revdex.com, especially since such materials are available for public review.

We were called to do a roof evaluation on your property with the old owners. We prepared areport and gave options. The report covered items that we knew were issues and items wethought could be issues going forward. We gave options to fix items 100% and we gave optionsfor patching. We were given authorization to fix the known issues 100% and other areas wewere only authorized to patch. For instance, instead of relining the gutters, we were onlyauthorized to coat them. There is a big difference between fixing an item and patching it. I donot offer warranties on patches, but I do on full repairs.

Perhaps I am being overly cautious, but I don’t feel comfortable sending my report that theother customers paid for. I also don’t feel comfortable sending any of the information fromthem. They are technically my customer, not you. I hope you understand this. Again, maybe Iam analyzing this too much.

I have been working on slate roofs since I was 14. My father had a roofing company in Ohio andall we worked on were slate, tile, and copper roofs. From churches, university buildings, to highend homes; it’s all we did. I have been to the slate quarries and been to multiple seminarsthrough the quarries regarding slate roofing. If this roof is the original, overall, it is in fairlygood shape. One of the many issues with older slate roofs is the underlayment. Back then theyused a simple asphalt-soaked paper (tar paper.) This paper turns to dust over the years. Whatdoes this mean? This means that if/when a slate breaks it almost always leads to a leak. Thereis nothing under the slate to protect the inside when it breaks. I don’t know how many slateswe replaced on the roof, but it was a lot. Even with doing so, a new slate can break the nextday. It is the unfortunate rub of having an older slate roof.

To my knowledge the only issue as of earlier this year was around the window area on the rightside of the home. It was my thought at that time that the trim and woodwork needed to beremoved, vapor barrier applied, and wood replaced or re-installed. There was a leak in thatgeneral area when we did our repairs. However, at the time it was thought to be a badlydeteriorated pipe boot. Was it a misdiagnosis at the time? Perhaps. A misdiagnosis doesn’tmean we did poor work, it just means the visible evidence at the time showed that is wasanother issue. If it is indeed the trim, sill, or window; it is not the level of carpentry that we do.That is ornamental trim and should be handled by an experienced trim carpenter.

What bothers me the most is your comment about me only being interested in high money, orlarge jobs. Yes, I did have a very large job at the end of last year. It was a series of threeneighborhoods that were not supposed to be done at once. However, given the timing ofcontract negotiations they all went at once and did not start until late September. This wasover nine football fields of roofing that had to be done before winter. It was a huge risk thatcould have buried the company if we did not pull it off. It took all our resources and energy. Ido not know how big you believe this company to be, but it is not that big. We had to maketough decisions on what we could and could not do. They then added a multitude of otheritems that had to be done in conjunction with the roofing.

***
***. I admit that thishas affected me greatly and has taken my energy and time from work. Lumping me into agroup of people who “don’t care” or only focus on high money jobs is not fair. I only have somany places I can be at any given time. With the magnitude of that job coupled with mypersonal situation, I will admit it has been a struggle.

The house and roof are old. We provided a report and gave our recommendations. Most ofour recommendations were accepted, others were not. You should have seen the roof beforewe did any work. We fixed a lot of issues. Is it possible that we missed something? Yes. Is itpossible that we misdiagnosed something? Yes. Is it also possible that a new issue has arisenoutside of what we repaired? Yes.

I did not appreciate being ambushed by another contractor when we visited last year. Thesituation made me/us very uncomfortable to be on property. His actions were not appropriate.

It is an odd situation given that you are not technically my customer. If we misdiagnosedsomething, I apologize. It doesn’t mean we didn’t fix or patch what was visible at the time. It iscertainly a possibility given the age of the roof/slate that issues in addition to what we foundtwo years ago have popped up (more slate breakage, gutter joints popping, etc.) It should benoted we received no contact regarding issues after the work was completed for over twoyears. If a warranty was issued for this work, it would have expired after a year. I give a one year warranty for full repair work unless otherwise noted and no warranty for patching.

I can offer another roof evaluation. Given the circumstances, if you wish to photograph theroof in areas you feel you are having issues from the ground. I can send a guy out to look thingsover free of charge. He will take photos and I will supply notes. What you do with the report istotally up to you.

Sincerely

most recent response lacks veracity and is quite emotional. The most salient fact is that *** billed and collected for work that he did not perform as well as the repairs which he did attempt were performed in a substandard fashion. This complaint would not be necessary had the roof not leaked resulting in severe damage to ceilings and walls to multiple rooms. As stated in my response of Mar. 15, we noted leaks in the early summer of 2018. These were communicated to *** contemporaneously via telephone without avail. In his previous rebuttal, he denied any communication, but fortunately, I had saved and have produced the texts beginning Jan 2019 which he reported never occurred. These were preserved at the time due to the impression I had that he most likely was not reputable and would, in fact, not stand behind his work. Prior to the texts, he was unresponsive to the many phone calls.Due to *** lack of response over several months and the progressive interior plaster and paint damage to multiple rooms, I was forced to seek re-repair of the work performed by *** with another contractor. As he reports in his most recent response, he had a heated confrontation with the contractor when informed that the work had not been completed and had been performed in a substandard fashion resulting in the water damage. *** collected $6,800 for window flashing and another $4,500 for flashing of chimneys. I have attached sample photos of multiple rooms where damage resulted. *** further illustrates his lack of professionalism by attempting to shirk his responsibility by stating that the work was not contracted by me. In fact, the roof inspection and subsequent contract were performed for the sale of the home and was so stated in the realtors response vie email (attachment of Mar 15) “The roof was the only inspection you asked for….see attached”. Perhaps he intentionally did not complete the work with the intent to maximize profit, deny the contract and leave the new owner unprotected and according to Totin, with no recourse. The simplest remedy to the situation is for *** to complete the work if he is capable of doing so with an independent contractor confirming industry standards. He can then submit repairs to the interior plaster to his insurance carrier provided he has coverage.

Totin Too Roofing Response • May 04, 2020

Good Morning:

We can continue to spin our wheels in the mud speculating on what happened, who is at fault, or what is at fault. Or we can wipe the slate clean (no pun intended) and begin to figure out a plan to resolve this. I will ask that you please stop speculation and the accusations of me being a guy who did the work incomplete for the sake of profit, or that I am only interested in profit. You do not know me and it is not appropriate. If that talk continues, I will withdraw from this conversation. Please email photographs to Lauren of the roof areas where you are currently having problems. I want to perform a new roof evaluation free of charge. The roof evaluation will include items we completed and anything that we find currently wrong. Let's start with this and go from there. Does this sound like a plan?
