September 25th, 2014Dear Sirs,
Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles is an economic development project of the [redacted], a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit. We have been in business for twenty years in Philadelphia and 26 years in Oakland, California, and...

enjoy a stellar reputation for excellent quality goods and outstanding service. We have the expressed support of thousands of donors and shoppers. This customer purchased a beautiful leather sofa and loveseat set on Saturday, September 13, 2014. We had featured this set for a week in the very front vignette of the store. This customer and others as well as the sales manager and other staff members were in close contact with the sofa and loveseat and there was no odor on this set. All couches are inspected and sprayed with insecticide before they come into the store, and several other customers had closely inspected the furniture and there was no odor.
We arranged to deliver it that day, (Saturday Sept. 13, 2014). it was raining heavily all day. We always thoroughly explain verbally and in writing to customers what happens if an item does not fit in their door, which is written and circled by the salesperson on the Uhuru Furniture sales slip. It states that the customer can return items that don't fit and get store credit, (not refunds), for their items if they are in the original condition they bought the items in.
Moments before our delivery team arrived at the customer's home with the set for delivery, the customer called and stated that he was not at home as planned. He said his brother was there, but that he did not have the key, so the set should be left in the hallway inside his apartment building. Our team brought the set into the building and the customer's brother signed for the items,Three days later on Tuesday September 16th, the sales manager received a call from the customer that the set did not fit in his door. He asked that we come and pick it up. He said nothing about any odor, only that it did not fit in his door. The sales manager explained the store policy again, that we could pick it up, and as long as the set was in the same condition as purchased he would get full store credit minus the $25 restocking charge. However, if there was any damage on the couch and loveseat he would not get his store credit. He assured her that the furniture was in the same condition as when he purchased it.
The same men who delivered the furniture on Saturday 9/13 went to pick it up Tuesday afternoon, When the truck team arrived at the customer's home, the set was outside in the yard, exposed to the rain. There was a large gouge in the back of the couch and considerable staining on the seat cushions showing that they had gotten wet and were still not dry. There was now an odor of cat urine on the furniture, The men took photos of the sofas and the damage and called the store stating that the set was so damaged that it should not be returned to the store, The customer's wife was there. Our team left without the set.
Later that day, the sales manager called the customer to explain why we could not take the set back. He said the problem was that the couch had an odor of cat urine. He was verbally abusive and threatening over the phone to the sales manager.
This customer had the merchandise in his possession for four days and during that time it was severely damaged. We had made it clear verbally and in writing several times that if the furniture is damaged we cannot take it back and the customer will not receive his Store credit or a refund.
Sincerely,Alison H
