Universal Roof & Contracting Reviews (%countItem)

In January 2014 I had my roof replaced by Universal Roofing Inc.

Universal Roofing chose the vendor for my replacement shingle as Certainteed.. This was done despite the fact that Certainteed had just settled a class action suite with regard to the quality of their products in 2010.

(See: ***/)

These shingles are supposed to have a 20 year warranty for material, defect and labor

I did not have a choice in the shingles origin only the color.

By 2017 my roof was covered in fungus, discoloration and mold. Simultaneously I had developed leaks in my roof around defective (Rubber) "Goose neck" pipes. Universal replaced these Goose Necks with standard Lead pipes but had to replace the shingles around each of the seven goose necks. These shingles were from a different lot of shingles as the originals but were the same color shingles as originally installed. The contrast between the shingles was and still is so great that I requested Universal to remedy the situation.

They refused and deferred any further action to Certainteed. I filed a claim with Certainteed. And in October 2019 a final judgment that the shingles did in fact have mold and fungus. But would only authorize me $1,500 dollars to "clean" the roof.

I contacted Universal and they want to charge me $5,400 dollars.

I contacted universal via e-mail since October 2019 in an attempt have them remedy the problem and replace the shingles on my home. Shingles that have been admitted to be defective in my final judgment from Certainteed.
.
In February 2020...universal stopped responding to my e-mails and requests for assistance. And I am left to seek outside assistance.

Universal hss been extremely difficult to deal with this entire process. (It took seven months for me to get them to collect a sample single for the Claim against Certainteed.) It seems to me that they don't want to fix the worst roof in the neighborhood...that they created...and just want me to go away.

Desired Outcome

You chose the shingle company...go back to them and obtain replacement shingles and then repair my defective roof.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jun 03, 2020

Hello,

The $5,400 must have been a typo.
To clean his roof would be about $1,200.
When we got the call about his warranty claim, we went onsite and removed a shingle for his claim and replaced the shingle (free of charge)
Homeowner met me when he got home and was very happy with the result.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Universal roofing's response is unsatisfactory.

In their response, Universal Roofing is ignoring the primary issue. They have not address their use of defective shingles that they applied to my roof. Universal Roofing chose the shingles and the entire roof is defective and getting more moldy fungus ridden and discolored by the month.

The shingles need to be replaced-not cleaned.
I contracted with Universal Roofing not the shingle company (Certainteed inc.) The shingles have failed in less than 3 years. Universal is contractually bound to remedy this situation.

In their response Universal claimed that Customer was happy to see the shingle sample taken. I was happy because it took months to get Universal to respond to my requests to do this one simple task. I was happy they actually finally showed up nothing more.

Secondarily, I have a written quote from Universal for $5,400 to clean the roof. This was after I showed universal the $1,500 dollars compensation that Certaineed offered me to clean the roof. Why did it take this Revdex.com complaint to get a new quote to clean the roof? If this was just a "typo" as Universal claims why do I have a written quote for $5,400 now with no follow up quote for $1,200?

This roof needs to be replaced with functional shingles. I have had 3rd party parties examine my roof and look at Certainteed's response. It is clear to the causal observer that the shingles need to be replaced.

Universal would rather I go away and pay for a new roof myself....six years after I paid them to put in the existing roof.

The Universal quote to clean is attached.

Mr.,

Thank you for reaching out to express your concern. Our warranty portion is with the workmanship and how we installed the product. We can assist you through the process by putting in a claim with the manufacturer however; we have no influence on what the manufacture chooses to do with the claim. We are here to assist as a liaison to the manufacture. Thank you

Universal chose the shingle company without my input or approval.

The shingle they chose failed.

So why is it my responsibility to interface with Cetainteed shingle inc/

Universal is contractually culpable.

Just signed a contract for a new roof . Our estimator was Archie S. After
Receiving several estimates, Archie was the only one who advised us that we had storm damage and needed to file a claim with our insurance carrier which we did and they approved. Thank you Archie! Looking forward to getting our new roof.

Universal salesperson told me that due to ponding of water on the flat part of the roof I needed to have roof tapered to pass inspection. They charged over $2000.00 for this additional service. After the new roof I still have standing water on the roof. Universal has not at all been proactive to correct the problem.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Sep 18, 2019

VP and the Production Manager of Universal Roof & Contracting promptly met with Mr. Ed M on September 19th at his home. They performed a detailed inspection of the area of concern and did not find any areas where there was standing water. At this time, we can confidently say there is no standing water on the roof and all inspections have been passed.

To Whom It May Concern,

We would first like to apologize for any inconvenience this dispute may have caused our customer. We strive for nothing but the best in customer care and workmanship with every job we undertake.
The customer has been contacted and the issue is set to be resolved on Monday 7/29/2019. The pool deck is also scheduled to be cleaned once the work has been completed. If there is anything left to be done, we encourage the customer to reach back out to us and we will be glad to work together to help resolve any further concerns.

The installation of 5 windows was to be completed in 6-8 weeks. The contract was on 10/4/18, they failed inspection and the work is still not done
I signed a contract with Renewal By Andersen of Central Florida on 10/04/18 for 5 window replacements. I was told it would be done in 6 to 8 weeks. The windows were finally installed at the end of February (4 months). The county inspector failed the installation and the contractor is due 04/30/19 to correct/replace/finish their job. They damaged the exterior and interior of the wall on one window. The Jacksonville manager was here several times, with no resolution. They have argued about the need to replace one window which has a cracked frame due to inexperienced installers. The people I have spoken to are unprofessional and uncooperative. It is now 7 months and I am still without a proper, inspector-certified set of windows -- only lots of arguments.

Desired Outcome

The contract to replace these windows cost $12,000 -- a tremendous amount of money for 5 windows. The business gave me a $500 refund, which they made for the inconvenience of incorrect measuring at the beginning of the job and the damage to my home. I feel they should offer another, more substantial refund for the lack of professionalism, and the inconvenience to me and my family of having the job in limbo for 7 months.

To Whom It May Concern,

We would first like to apologize for any inconvenience this dispute may have caused our customer. We strive for nothing but the best in customer care and workmanship with every job we undertake.
All of the issues on this job have been completed and the final inspection passed. The homeowner and our management team have agreed on a compensation package and it has been processed.
The customer asked that we come back and check a few fasteners and install screw cover caps. He also requested that we communicate with him via email exclusively, however, he never responded to our last email (5/10) offering to have somebody go by to complete this request. If there is anything left to be done, we encourage the customer to reach back out to us and we will be glad to work together to help resolve any further concerns.

Numerous times requesting copies of the work permit, completion paperwork, and final receipt. None of the staff members contacted would respond.
I live out of state and was looking for a roofing company to work on my rental house. No concerns with communication getting me to sign with them. As soon as the contract was signed, the communication stopped. The work was completed on the scheduled timeline and craftsmanship was great, but for getting information from them has been impossible. Needing physical documentation such as copies of the work permit and a final receipt was never provided. After numerous phone calls and e-mails, I still have not received any documentation. As a rental property, the cost of replacing the roof is needed for taxes. Would also like to have this information for my files..

Desired Outcome

Just want all paperwork associated with the job.

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
All necessary paperwork was supplied.

Job not completed; job abandonment. Product and safety concern.
I am hoping that you can help resolve what has become an unpleasant customer experience. I live in Orlando and contracted the install of new windows and a sliding door through the local Renewal By Andersen of Central Florida. I started this process back in November, with a great sales presentation and a belief that I was going to get a high quality product and service. It took about 5 weeks for the ordered items to be delivered, which I wasn't upset about. But what did irritate me was that the sliding door, the biggest ticket item of the order, was not delivered. In fact it wasn't even ordered! That aside, they completed the install in two days and ordered the sliding door.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and the door arrives. I am concerned because the sales pitch was all about Andersen using a composite material but this door says it is vinyl. Vinyl? The door has a sticker from a company called Pro Via with an address out of Ohio? I thought Andersen manufactured it's own doors and windows? The installer says it is a new model door... Okay... I guess? Then they inform us the door hardware was not ordered. Really? So we have door that we can't lock and have to grab from all angles to open. They also did not install the sliding screen door!

They show up one or two days later with a handle for the door, but something is not right. The door looks like it was built with an internal door locking mechanism, but the handle is a plain white handle. There is no way to lock the door. Also after examining the door casing there is no hardware or latch for the door to secure to even if you could turn some sort of lock. They put the door handle on a left.

So it has been about three weeks since we last saw RBA of Central Florida. I still have a sliding door that doesn't lock and no sliding screen door. I have had no inspection completed for the work so all of my windows and door still have stickers all over them. I have made two or three attempts to reach the office and left voicemails. My wife as also tried to reach them. I wrote a poor review on their website but it is unlikely they will post it to their site (but I hope it will result in a phone call). I have also contacted manufacturer in Minnesota. I received a response from the on Jan 28th, but still have not resolution, sliding that locks, or a screen door. I have lost patience and I am ready to begin social media onslaught and involve local media outlets if I could get any of the consumer investigative reporters interested in my experience. This Orlando agent for RBA has stain this experience with horrid customer service.

I feel like the misrepresented the product as it relates to the sliding, as I stated it is not manufactured by Andersen. I also feel the have abandoned the job, leaving a door that does not lock unless I add hardware to the door. I also do not have a screen door which I paid for. After spending $3,000 for a door I should have to add hardware to the door so that I can lock it.

Desired Outcome

I would like an explanation for the sliding door that was installed; why is not an Andersen sliding door? I would like to know why it is a vinyl door, when the whole sales pitch was about the benefit of the composite material used to manufacture Andersen doors and windows and it's superiority to withstanding the elements vs a vinyl door/window. Since I paid for an Anderson sliding door. I would like an Anderson door installed. If this cannot be done because they don't make one for my size door (which I would find difficult to believe because I was told Andersen customizes to fit), then I would like a price adjustment on my install because of the false advertising used to make the sale. If I have to settle with this door, I would find a refund of 1,000 - 1,500 to be just compensation. This refund would provide for the inferior product and time and aggravation that we have endured in this experience. I would also like the wholesaler and Andersen Corporation to reflect on this experience. Given the number of times my wife or I have had to adjust or schedules for installers to be at our home and the hassle and aggravation to get the job completed, is this really the outcome they would call a "success"? Would they consider providing perhaps a gift card of some sort to a restaurant that my wife and I could enjoy. It would be a kind gesture of reconciliation and confirmation that they acknowledge the customer service and delivery of service was not to their standard.

We spoke to Mrs. this morning and agreed to supply the door at no cost and to absolve any issues as quickly and easily as we can. Our GM has spoken to the family as of this morning.

Customer Response • Feb 09, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Renewal did contact us and said they have ordered the door. They did say they would replace the current door with a Andersen door. But given my experience I am hesitant to say that I am satified with the actions taken. I would prefer to follow up after the door has been installed

We hired Universal Roofing to repair a specific section of my roof. I expected this to be completed as specified. Universal called me on the phone stating they needed to add an additional product because they did not know how to fix my roof back the way it was. I was extremely hesitant as I did not want this type of application. I then agreed. Universal then left my home with the job incomplete and not painted to match the house and shingles now missing from my roof. I also asked and got quoted a repair to damaged drywall in my garage. This was half completed as well. As the wall meeting the roof still has seen water damage. My husband was then told the company are not painters yet quoted damaged drywall to be painted.

Desired Outcome

Other (requires explanation) I would like the company to complete the job or give us a partial refund so we can find a company to finish the job. I would like to stop hearing excuses and just have the company stand up and do the right thing.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jan 29, 2019

We originally went to the homeowners house to complete a contract and repair. The repair included re-doing a dead valley tucked up against a small portion of wall underneath an overhang.

Upon demolition of the area of work which included the old roofing system in the dead valley, it was determined that the existing dead valley ran up the adjacent wall, behind an improperly installed piece of metal that was being used as the siding on that section of wall. In order to properly install the new roofing material, the wall covering as well as the soffit above it needed to be removed, inspected, and re-installed with some type of acceptable material.

Upon removing all the existing material, it was also found that the 5 x 5 roof to wall flashing was badly damaged and also needed to be replaced, which would not have been discovered if we had not removed all the existing material. Because the wall was covered by a very flimsy piece of metal, it was not possible to reuse that piece of metal to cover the wall, and it also was not advised to use a new piece of metal as that is not proper covering for a wall. Because of how the situation unfolded, I offered to use Hardie panel and Hardie trim at a very discounted rate to cover the wall seeing as it was such an unexpected costs that they were going to have to incur. Although We explained to the homeowner that hardie material is a top-of-the-line product and much better than what was there before, they were hesitant to approve the work. They eventually did approve the AWO that included us installing new Hardie panel and trim on that section of wall, which very clearly did not say anything about us painting the new material.

The exterior work was completed, but we still needed to access the interior of the house to complete the contracted repainting of the stained area on the ceiling in the garage. After numerous attempts to schedule access to the interior, we were able to schedule the work on a Saturday, and completed the stain blocking inside the house to complete the contracted work.

At this point in time, the homeowner began to contact me to express how upset they were that the material that was installed over the wall, the hardy panel and hardy trim, was not painted as part of the contracted work. I then explain to them that painting was not part of the additional work order, but we would be more than happy to provide an additional AWO for the cost of painting the raw material that was installed. This only further upset the customer and they again expressed that they do not understand why that would not be included in the first place. We had a final walk through of the job noticed small lifting in the flat roof, notified the homeowner and set a date to come back and repair it. All work has been completed beyond the scope of work. We have all photos of before and after for evidence. Please see box link below.

On May 24, 2018, Universal Roof & Contracting (URC) was scheduled to start a reroof job at my residence. When the materials were delivered to my house there was damage to my fascia and landscape, and I immediately notified URC. I was assured this would be addressed and fixed after the reroof job. The reroof job went ahead. During the day of the job I walked through with the head of the crew and we discussed the job and specific areas of the house. We discussed that there was an old dish antenna mount that I would like removed because it would be in the way of the drip edge. The rusty old dish mount was not removed. I spoke with someone within a week of the job and asked that the piece of drip edge be replaced. URC agreed and that the drip edge and fascia would be taken care of. Since the completion of the job in May I have been trying to get someone to address the drip edge issue and damage from the install with no success. After 5 months and multiple phone calls and numerous email to a number of people my job is still left incomplete. There are also issues with the billing but I have not been able to get anyone to even discuss that with me. They billed my insurance company for rotted wood, but that bill was lower than the one that I received.

Other (requires explanation) All I want is for this job to be completed and billing to be sorted out.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jan 31, 2019

This has been taken care of over two months ago from productions end. The drip edge was fixed and homeowner was going to take care of the flaked paint himself, in which we have an email from him stating he will handle certain items on his own.

In regards to payment, we do know all production issues have been resolved, and there shouldn't be any payment issues. Our lead controller did make a call to Mr. for payment and to discuss any billing questions he may have.

Universal Roof & Contracting replaced our residential house roof and our barn roof with architectural shingles on September 12 & 13, 2018. During the course of the residential roof removal and installation they damaged five windows and one French door on our house and are now refusing replace them. They are also refusing to finish cleaning the tar/bull off of the house's and barn's concrete surfaces, mud room door vinyl siding, new eave drip & or fascia, and white vinyl surfaces. There are still deficiencies in how the eave drip was installed on the house.Seven skylights were replaced on the barn and installed with either ring shank nails or shingle nails even though I pointed out to roofing crew and talked to the project manager that installation instructions require #8x1 5/8" Truss Head Drywall Screws, they ignored my request to use the required screws. I contacted the manufacture of the skylights and explained how the contractor installed the skylights and the manufacturer told me that the contractor's installation method would void the 25 year warrantee for my skylights. I informed the project manager and was told they would provide me paperwork indicating that it was okay to use nails of the installation. I have not received any paperwork from the contractor. The contractor sent an email on October 29, 2018 stating that the skylights were installed correctly. There were off ridge vents on the barn that did not require to be replaced so the contractor filled the hole with plywood, I talked to the County inspector and was told the contractor should have installed bracing at the hole due to a full sheet of plywood was not replaced. The contractor is aware of my concerns but is demanding final payment and has no intentions of finishing our roofs.

Desired Outcome

Other (requires explanation) We would like the project finished per Florida Building Codes and our windows replaced and the French door glass replaced.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jan 31, 2019

According to our production crew, all items noting that the screws used were accurate and safe. In addition, we had not received notification of of any damaged windows or doors until 3 months later, when we had received a call after a storm stating we had done the damage. We did not replace due to knot knowing where the damage actually came from, as there our manager stated they were not aware of any damage when they left.

We always finish projects to meet codes and requirements and take great pride in the work that we do. We have requested payment and have emailed and called to resolve and answer questions many times, to no avail.

I have been waiting weeks for the inspection on my phone eleven installed windows which still have the sticker info I was told not to remove until they were inspected. They are still there; not yet inspected. I called to relay that info some two and a half months ago; told that it would be better amen care of. It was not done and weeks later I we tto the inspection office at the Seminole County Services building; discussed the issue; set up an appointment for an inspection; inspector arrived; could not find the permit or any of the required paperwork and could not perform an inspection. He coming letedto he sent to Renewal by Anderson which stated these facts on June 28, 2018.The stickers are still on my windows and no one has contacted me to inform me of the project's status. I also wish to report that one window will not fully close and thereby cannot be like locked - a security issue My request is that this matter be immediately attended to. I believe that I have acted in good faith but not happy about the stated issues unattended as promised and expected

Our operations manager reached out to the homeowner today 7/19/18 to follow up in regards to all of his concerns. Dean found out that he never received his permit, so we are having someone run to the Seminole County office to pick up the Permit and deliver to the customer right away. We will also address his concern on his windows that aren't locking correctly, and fix them.

Dean also discussed with the customer that when we drop off the permit we will schedule the inspection at his earliest convenience to get this completed for him ASAP.

Thank you

The Customer would like final inspection on Monday, July 30th and we are scheduling ASAP.

This company replaced our roof 3 years ago. We had a leak a few weeks after and they repaired the leak. The roof is leaking again but they refuse now
Universal Roof and Contracting replaced our roof 3 years ago. A few weeks after they replaced the roof, the roof started leaking and they had to come back and fix the leak.

A month ago, the roof started leaking again in the same spot. I asked Universal to come by and take a look.

It took them 3 weeks to send someone. Finally, someone came by and inversitaged the issue.

They immediately sent me a proposal for $2,600 to fix the leak and claimed that the leak is not related to the replacement of the roof.

After several phone call attempts, I was able to get a hold off the sales manager who was in our house to have us sign the contract before the work commenced. He basically told me that they were aware of this issue when they first inspected the roof and that's why they fixed it the first time and he said however it is different this time and they had to charge for the repair. He said they would lower the repair fee down to $1,300.

Desired Outcome

I was told by Universal that the roof is covered under 7-year warranty and I would like them to come back and fix the leak.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jun 05, 2018

We would first like to apologize for any inconvenience this dispute may have caused our customer. We strive for nothing but the best in customer care and workmanship with every job we undertake. We would also like to take some time to clarify what seems to be a disconnect between the customer and our offices. After careful review of our original contract (see attached document) and inspection of the situation in question we maintain that this issue, while unfortunate, is not within our originally contracted scope of work.
After replacing the homeowner's roof in May of 2015, we returned once again in Jan of 2017 to address an issue with leaking in a dead valley area; as you may understand, these areas are simply architecturally more prone to water collection and issues with leaking, especially with our most recent hurricane and hail storms. Upon our most recent inspection of the area in question, however, we have determined that the water is coming from the roof-to-wall flashing originally installed by the builder of the home and not the roof itself or the dead valley area we fixed. As you can see by the attached contract, roof-to-wall flashing was not in our original scope of work and therefore is not covered by our warranty.
As mentioned previously, we truly strive for excellence in customer care. We understand the importance and value of our relationship with customers. So, to help assuage our customer's frustration we offered to bring down the roof-to-wall flashing repair job to an at-cost price of $1,300 from our original quote of $2,600. We hoped that our customer would not take this as an "admission of fault" but rather a willingness to help bring a resolution to their situation, despite the issue not being a part of our scope. We believe that at this point it will be best for one of our executive leaders, Owner and President, Jared M, or Vice President, Aaron M, to reach out to Mr. to come to an agreement or help clarify this matter.

This document was never given to me upon completion of work.
The document attached to the response is a Word document and does not bear the signature of the company official.
I would like Universal Roof & Contracting to produce a scanned copy of the original signed and dated document.
Regardless, I find it unacceptable that a roofing company replacing the entire roof and not noticing an original installation defect caused by the builder of the house.
I am expecting Universal to address this issue immediately.

Customer Response • Jul 02, 2018

I was never contacted by Universal as it was stated on their response

Universal Roof & Contracting Response • Jul 11, 2018

We attempted to reach out to the homeowner via electronic correspondence twice. The homeowner and one of our upper level managers have now gotten in contact since then. An in-person meeting is currently being scheduled between the two to come to a resolution.

I had 8 windows installed by Renewal by Anderson. I am pleased with the windows and the service.

Roof leaked, damaged by trusses, and threw away my chimney cap, replaced it with one did not work and was unsafe.
After paying for almost every upgrade they offered, the roof leaked, they damaged by trusses, and threw away my chimney cap and replaced it with one that did not work and was unsafe. A chimney safety inspector documented it and when I showed Universal Roofing they were unwilling to fix it.

This is only part of the issues. They have tried to avoid doing anything about the issues they create and they are doing things that are dangerous. I really didn't like the overall attitude from corp.

Employees were great.. but they seem to have a company that will not allow them to fix these issues.

I had told them about the damage to the wood on my roof and they told me that I had old wood, but the pressure was too high on their air hammers. I let this issue go at the time but now everything sets in badly for me with this issue.

If they do not respond with an easy resolution quickly then I would like to peruse damages to my roof as well.

Desired Outcome

I would like for them to pay for the inspection and the new chimney cap. .. if they draw out this process, then i would like for them to pay for the repair of the wood on my roof that they damaged.

Universal Roof & Contracting Response

To Whom It May Concern, Dec. 12, 2017

We are deeply saddened to hear about Mr. experience with our service. On November 28th our Sales Manager, Devon Y, met with Mr. to review the concerns voiced in his claim. He also reviewed a copy of the results of the chimney inspection (attached.) We have agreed to repair damage to the chimney cap, which was missing at the point of initial inspection in March of 2016. (photograph attached.) After speaking with Mr. and Mr. Y, we believe it is in our best interest for our President, Jared M, to meet with the homeowner at his property to resolve any other issues and set a resolution. We have scheduled a meeting to take place on December 18, 2018 at 12:30 at Mr. residence. We are hopeful we will be able to resolve this in person with Mr..
