Several months ago our Service Department did perform an oil and filter change on Mr. [redacted] 1996 Honda Accord with approximately 270,000 miles on the odometer. When he arrived home in [redacted], it was determined that oil was leaking from the oil drain plug. We did not know if the...
threads had failed in the oil pan, or the drain plug simply worked lose. Our Service Director determined that whatever the reason for the failure, we would accept responsibility and "good will" a long block engine exchange at no charge. The basic engine components were replaced with a used Honda engine, with less miles than were previosly in the Accord. Mr. [redacted] took the Accord back, and all was fine. Approximately 2 months later Mr. [redacted]'s had a failure with an ignition component on the 21 year old Accord. As this was not related to the engine replacement; we replaced the failed part and Mr. [redacted] paid for it. Since that time, Mr. [redacted] has complained about an intermittent "dying" problem. Intermittent dying issues are often difficult to quickly diagnose, and at this point we have been sometimes able to duplicate the failure, but then the Accord will properly re-start. We have an award winning service department, 30 years of operation in Corvallis, master Honda technicians, and the resources of Honda Tech Line to assist us with repairs. We have properly followed Honda's diagnostic flow chart, but because of the age and mileage of the Accord, no failure codes have been stored in the cars computer. The next step according to Honda will be to replace the 21 year old distributer. We have not "distroyed" this 1996 Accord, but time and 270,000 miles have taken their toll. Mr H[redacted] and or myself will meet Mr [redacted] and go over his options. Sincerely, Ron T[redacted]President, University Honda
